Once upon a time, in an underwater kingdom far beneath the surface of the ocean, there lived a pink mermaid. She was the youngest of six sisters, each born one year apart. Their father was the Sea-King, and their grandmother, a dowager, lived with them in their grand palace made of shimmering coral.
Every year, when a mermaid turned fifteen, she was allowed to swim to the surface for the first time to catch a glimpse of the world above. The Pink Mermaid listened longingly to her sisters' descriptions of the world inhabited by human beings, but she never imagined falling in love with one of them until the day she spotted a handsome prince celebrating his birthday on a ship.
As she watched the festivities from a safe distance, a violent storm hit, sinking the ship and throwing the prince into the sea. Without hesitation, the Pink Mermaid swam to his rescue, and after delivering him to shore, she waited nearby until a young woman and her ladies-in-waiting found him.
To the Pink Mermaid's dismay, the prince never saw her or even realised that she had saved his life. She became melancholy, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, and so she visited the Sea Witch who lived in a dangerous part of the ocean. The witch willingly sold her a potion that would give her legs in exchange for her beautiful voice.
After drinking the potion, the Pink Mermaid passed out on the shore, naked, and was found by the prince, who was mesmerized by her beauty and grace despite her being mute. She became his favorite companion, accompanying him on many outings, but he did not fall in love with her. When the prince's parents arranged for him to marry the neighbouring princess, he refused, saying he could only love the young woman from the temple who he believed rescued him.
The princess turned out to be the temple woman and the prince declared his love for her, announcing their royal wedding aboard a ship. The Pink Mermaid's heart broke as she thought of all that she had sacrificed and endured for the prince. Before dawn, her sisters brought her a dagger, but she could not bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his new wife. Instead, she threw the dagger and herself off the ship into the water just as dawn broke.
Her body dissolved into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she became a luminous and ethereal earthbound spirit, a daughter of the air. As she ascended into the atmosphere, she was greeted by other daughters who told her she had become like them because she strove with all her heart to obtain an immortal soul. Because of her selflessness, she was given the chance to earn her own soul by doing good deeds for mankind for 300 years and would one day rise up into Heaven.
The Pink Mermaid accepted her new form and began to travel the world, performing good deeds wherever she went. She helped lost travellers find their way home, healed sick children, and even saved people from drowning. As she did, she found that her spirit grew stronger and brighter.
One day, after three hundred years of service, the Pink Mermaid was called to Heaven. There, she was greeted by the prince who had died many years before. He told her that he had realised his mistake in not loving her and had spent his life doing good deeds in hopes of one day being reunited with her.
Together, they walked through the gates of Heaven, hand in hand, as the Pink Mermaid felt her soul finally become complete. She had lived a selfless life, and it had brought her the greatest reward of all.
