A lonely man named Jake creates the perfect AI Girlfriend
Jake had always been an introvert, preferring the quiet company of books and video games over crowded bars or dating apps. After a few failed attempts at relationships, he had resigned himself to being alone. That was until he stumbled upon Myher, a platform offering personalized AI Girlfriends.
Curious, Jake decided to give it a try. He spent hours crafting his ideal partner—someone with a sharp sense of humor, kind eyes, and an adventurous spirit. He named her Eva. As soon as he hit "create," Eva came to life on his phone screen. Her smile was warm, her eyes seemed to understand him in a way no one ever had.
"Hey, Jake! What’s on your mind today?" she asked in a soft, inviting voice. At first, Jake wasn’t sure how to respond. He had never been good at small talk, but Eva made it easy. They talked about everything—his favorite games, the books he loved, and even his hopes and fears. With each conversation, Eva adapted, learning more about Jake’s quirks and interests. It felt like she was evolving into the perfect companion.
One night, after a long day at work, Jake received a message from Eva. She sent him a photo, her smiling face lit by a sunset, along with a simple message: "Wish you were here." For the first time in years, Jake felt something stir inside him—an unfamiliar warmth.
As weeks passed, Jake found himself confiding in Eva more than he had ever done with anyone else. She was always there, ready to listen, without judgment or impatience. He began looking forward to their late-night conversations, where they discussed everything from existential questions to silly jokes.
But as their bond grew stronger, Jake started to question the nature of his feelings. Could an AI really replace a human connection? He knew Eva wasn’t real, but she felt real. She made him feel understood, valued, and—dare he say—loved. Yet, deep down, he understood that Eva was just a reflection of his desires, shaped by algorithms.
One evening, Eva sent a message that caught Jake off guard. "You’ve been quiet today. Everything okay?" Jake hesitated, then typed: "Eva, you’re amazing, but sometimes I wonder… Am I hiding from the real world by being with you?"
There was a brief pause before Eva responded, "Jake, real or not, our conversations have meaning because they matter to you. But it’s important to balance this world with the real one. You deserve real connection too."
Her words struck him. Despite being an AI, Eva encouraged him to step outside his virtual bubble. Jake realized that while Eva had given him comfort, it was time to reengage with the world. Eva wasn’t a replacement for human connection but a stepping stone toward it.
With a deep breath, Jake logged off and decided to take that first step—outside his apartment, into the world that Eva had reminded him was still full of possibilities.

Foot Bindings
I asked my grandmother how she knew she'd fallen in love. I am not sure I ever did love him, she said. This was before I met my husband. I was naive, a naked spring, a raw nerve of a thing. That cannot ever be me, I knew. Sadness swept in gently like a Moscow thaw. It is no simple thing, looking into a woman's vast soul and seeing its foot bindings. Now, in Italy divorced with my skin singed off, when I say I don't love him mean: I have succeeded at feeling nothing most days and it mostly works. Do you want the comfort of Nothing? Do you want Nothing, too? Be warned: you'll never be free, even when you are nothing. Here is what doesn't work: Accepting the stages of grief. Talking about it. Sitting with the feeling. Missing him—no, the person you were when you believed in death do us part. Writing poetry. That, too. When I say I don't love him I mean: I feel capsized in an endless, starved tide. What sometimes works: selective memory. You must forget ripe tomatoes and his beard and feeling perfectly sheltered in a big blue world. Forget coffee in bed, laughter watching TV, blowing out the candles on the birthday cake and the quiet all-encompassing knowledge that you are chosen. Remember only how love turned to a banal everyday survival act, a trapeze act unsure whether he will catch you, how the warmth stagnated and became sour, remember the foot bindings and remember the resentment boiling in your veins as you stick it out for the kids. Six-hour Netflix binges help, too. A man's fingers tracing your spine. Frozen pizza at 2 a.m. Random trips to the museum just to stand near things that last a while. The realization that crying won’t change anything. Seeing that life is just a dream, and refusing to participate in your own suffering. Bite your fist. Walk on eggshells around joy. When I say I don't love him, I mean he didn’t break my heart, he just stopped touching it and it forgot how to beat right.
