The owl's magic
The evergreen tree
As Ben looked out of the car window, he felt swallowed by the evergreen trees that surrounded his new home. Moving to a new environment, miles away from his hometown, was very new to him. He was used to living on the tenth floor of a high rise apartment building. As he and his family approached their new home, he noticed three children playing in the nearby field. The moving company was following nearby. Ben got out of the car and went inside of his new home. He was excited to see which room his parents picked out for him. He ran up the stairs and noticed that his room sat at the back of the house. The swallowing evergreen trees could be seen out of his bedroom window. Ben tried to focus on getting settled in his new room, but his mind was preoccupied with the evergreen trees.
He watched the sunset out of his window, but began to hear strange sounds coming from the wooded area behind his house. He was determined to find out what the sounds were. Ben jumped out of his beanbag chair and ran downstairs to explore the sound. As he walked out of the front door, he could see the three children playing in the field. Ben was usually shy and kept to himself but he felt the urge to go and introduce himself. He walked over to the group of children, who were very friendly, and they all exchanged names. Ben felt comfortable and welcomed in his new community. They all played until the street lights came on. Once Ben went back inside, he realized that he did not get to figure out where the sounds were coming from. It was too late for him to go back outside, so he decided that he would try again the next morning.
The next morning, Ben could hear the sounds echoing from his backyard. He was eager to find out what was causing the sounds. He jumped out of bed and changed his clothes so that he could begin exploring. His parents were already on their way to work, so he was home alone. To his surprise, Miranda, Zack, and Veronica were already outside playing. He invited them to join him. They did not hesitate and began to follow Ben to the back of his house. As they got closer to the evergreen trees, the sound began to get louder and louder. At one point it was so loud they all had to cover their ears.
They quickly began to explore the area around them, and once they reached the wooded area, they could not believe their eyes. They noticed an evergreen tree, but not just any ordinary evergreen tree. The tree was glistening in the night and the leaves were covered in glitter. At the very top of the tree, there was a barn owl making loud screeching sounds. Ben, Zack, Veronica, and Miranda were all still very curious to figure out why the owl was making the sound. Ben tried touching the tree to see if the owl would come down closer to them. Once Ben touched the tree, he disappeared into thin air. His friends stood there confused and a bit frightened, but they were determined. The three remaining friends came up with a plan to touch the tree at the same time in hopes of ending up with Ben.
The three friends ended up in a new world. There were rainbow colored skies, purple oceans, and giant horses. They seemed to have gotten a little older as well. They frantically started to look for Ben, but did not see him nearby. As they began to start their hunt for Ben, Veronica noticed a faint beeping sound coming from her hip. She had a strange digital device clipped to her pants. Zack had one clipped to his sneaker, and Miranda had one clipped to her shirt. Veronica’s device began to beep and offered directions, similar to a gps device. They followed the directions and ended up at a random house. They pressed the doorbell and the door opened very slowly. Zack peeked into the door to make sure it was safe for them to enter. They slowly walked inside the house. As they began to look around, they noticed a certain painting on the wall. The painting appeared discombobulated, but there was a small sheet of instructions taped to the bottom of it. The instructions explained that they had to move the smaller pieces around to create a more defined painting. They were exhausted, confused, and worried because there was still no sign of Ben. After three days of trying to complete the painting, Zack put the final piece in place. Almost like magic, the same glistening evergreen tree grew from the wall of the house. Immediately, the owl flew in through an open window and landed on top of the tree.
They were expecting the screeching sounds, but the owl began to talk loudly instead. The owl congratulated them and stated that they were worthy of using magic because of their kind gestures in trying to save their friend. The owl gave the children the short message, then disappeared abruptly. Zack, Veronica, and Miranda stood there in total confusion. Moments later, Ben suddenly appeared in the same room that they had been in. They were all speechless because they had no idea what was going on. Once Ben began to talk to them and explain to him what was happening, a portal opened up on the wall. The portal was rainbow in color and big enough for them to walk through.
The four reunited friends entered the portal and ended up back at the same evergreen tree in Ben’s backyard. As they were walking through the backyard, Ben explained that the owl noticed the efforts they put into saving him. He also expressed that in return, the owl taught him magic and gave him the ability to teach his three friends. Ben utilized his ability and taught them everything that he learned from the owl. They eventually tried to go back to the same evergreen tree to connect with the owl, but the owl was no longer there. The friends continued to practice magic as they grew older, and eventually began to test others to see if they were worthy of learning the owl’s magic.
