The Nightmare
When fear takes over the mind, reality and illusion blur — a chilling journey into the depths of the unknown.Written by Ismail Khan

Everyone has experienced a nightmare at some point — a terrifying dream that jolts you awake, heart pounding, sweat dripping down your face. But what happens when a nightmare refuses to end, bleeding into waking life itself? This is the story of a nightmare so real that it changed one man’s world forever.
Jacob was an ordinary man living a peaceful life in a small town. He had a steady job, loving family, and a cozy home. Yet, for weeks, he was haunted by a recurring nightmare — a dark, endless maze filled with shadows that whispered secrets he couldn’t understand.
At first, Jacob dismissed it as stress or exhaustion. But the nightmare grew stronger, more vivid. Each night, he found himself trapped deeper inside the maze, unable to find a way out. The shadows seemed to follow him, whispering warnings and threats, their voices cold and menacing.
One morning, Jacob awoke to find his world subtly altered. Familiar places appeared distorted, faces of loved ones briefly morphed into sinister masks. The nightmare had seeped into his reality. He began doubting his senses — was he awake or still trapped in the dream?
Desperate for answers, Jacob sought help from doctors and therapists. But no medication or therapy could explain his condition. His nights were still plagued by the maze, and his days became a blur of confusion and fear.
The nightmare was no longer just a dream; it was a prison. It controlled his thoughts, twisted his perceptions, and isolated him from the world. Friends drifted away, unable to understand his torment. His family watched helplessly as Jacob spiraled deeper into darkness.
One evening, as Jacob wandered his home in a daze, he noticed something strange — a faint glow coming from the attic. Driven by a mix of fear and curiosity, he climbed the creaky stairs. There, amidst forgotten relics and dust-covered boxes, he found an old mirror.
Looking into it, Jacob saw not his reflection, but the maze from his nightmare — endless corridors stretching into darkness, shadows flickering just beyond the glass. The mirror was a gateway, a portal between his nightmare and reality.
Jacob realized that to escape, he had to confront the nightmare directly. It was not enough to run or hide. The maze represented his fears, regrets, and unresolved pain. The shadows were parts of himself he refused to face.
Gathering courage, Jacob stepped closer to the mirror. He reached out, and to his surprise, his hand passed through the glass. With a deep breath, he stepped into the maze.
Inside, the shadows whispered louder, their voices weaving stories of sorrow, guilt, and fear. But Jacob did not run. Instead, he faced each shadow with compassion, listening to their stories and forgiving himself for past mistakes.
The maze began to change. The darkness lightened, corridors widened, and the whispers softened into comforting voices. Jacob felt a warmth he hadn’t known in weeks — hope.
When he finally stepped back through the mirror, Jacob found himself in his home, the nightmare lifted. The world was clearer, brighter, and full of possibility.
Jacob’s journey through the nightmare taught him a powerful lesson: sometimes, the darkest fears we face are inside us. But with patience, kindness to ourselves, and a commitment to justice in understanding our own hearts, we can find the light.
