The night walker

Story of the canoeist.

By Rachael Idoko Published 3 years ago 3 min read

He didn't like what he was doing, he hated it. He also had no choice, that was the only way he was going to feel happy; you know the happiness from supposed "vengeance". Vengeance from people that knew nothing, innocent people.

Arnold was a well-known canoeist in his home town, but not that well-known if you ask me. For the people in his village who only knew and saw him during the day time, he was just a tall light-skinned man who was very shy and introverted but at night, when the sun would rest and ask it's brother; the moon to take over, he was THE NIGHT WALKER.

"Leave us alone, Leave us alone", Catherine and Tunde cried out. After getting married to each other against their parents' will because of differences in status and race, Catherine and Tunde would have preferred to live with the devil in hell rather than going through the enormous pain they went through every minute of the day, and what made it even worse was the fact they had an "unfortunate" child (like Catherine's father would call the little baby),out of wedlock...Catherine had everything she could ever want as the princess of the kingdom; expensive jewelries, healthy food, clean water, handsome suitors and basically everything but she lacked one thing, "true love". On the other hand, there was Tunde, the Nigerian slave boy who was just captured to work for the monarch and his kingdom, his only business was to work, to work hard enough to go back to Nigeria and take care of his family.

Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and eventually years, passed by and the two individuals from two different worlds fell in love but...*FAST-FORWARD TO 30 YEARS LATER*

Arnold had just gotten recruited as one of the naval officers of the country, it was like a dream come through for him after working and struggling for years for this opportunity. His "papa" who happened to be a friend of his late parents died a few months before his recruitment, he always knew it was his thing, "he loved playing with the water, toy boats and ships and he loved watching movies about, um, water and um, ships and the navy and their whit shiny uniform", his papa told one of his Arnold's friends on the day of their recruitment exams. Like Cristiano Ronaldo who was destined to play football, Michal Jordan destined to play basketball and Serena Williams for tennis, Arnold Tunde Adedeji was destined to be a naval captain. He did not just do it for the name, money or even passion but he managed to turn his aquaphobia to his strength, despite life giving him bad lemons, he still decided to make lemonade. His parents, the love birds had a very tragic death which caused his aquaphobia at the time, they were slaughtered like animals meant for sacrifices and thrown into the river, such a tragic event for a 6 year old.

Sometimes, dreams come to pass and sometimes, they don't but most times, past events still come back to haunt victims. Due to his mental disorder at the navy, Arnold ended up killing two of his fellow naval officers which led to his expulsion at the navy, he blamed everything on his past and past memories and swore to take revenge for his parents death and the trauma it had caused him.

After his expulsion at the navy, he returned to the kingdom but things had changed drastically: bad governance, aemed robbery crime, generally. From his knowledge at the navy, he decided to become a canoeist and killed the villagers at night.
