The Night That Wouldn’t End: A Story of Suspense in a Single Evening

A Thriller Where Darkness Hides More Than Just Shadows

By Khubaib KhanPublished 7 months ago 3 min read
Scared night

Emma had always loved thunderstorms.

There was something hypnotic about the way the sky darkened, the way the air thickened with the scent of ozone before the first raindrops fell. That evening, as she curled up on her couch with a book and a cup of tea, she barely noticed the distant rumble of thunder. The weather forecast had predicted heavy rain, but nothing out of the ordinary.

She should’ve paid more attention.

The first flicker of the lights made her glance up. A minor power surge—nothing unusual during a storm. But when the television blinked off and the room plunged into darkness, she sighed, setting her book aside.

Just a blackout. It’ll be back on soon.

She reached for her phone, but the screen remained stubbornly black. Dead battery.

That was when she heard it.

Three slow, deliberate raps on the front door.

Emma froze.

No one should have been out in this storm. Her apartment complex was mostly empty—most of her neighbors had gone home for the weekend. And yet, someone was at her door.

She waited, barely breathing.

The knock came again.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Louder this time. More insistent.

“Hello?” she called, her voice unsteady.

Silence.

Her pulse hammered in her throat as she crept toward the door, pressing her eye against the peephole.

The hallway was empty.

A chill ran down her spine.

She told herself she was imagining things. The wind, maybe. A loose shutter banging against the building.

But then—

A creak from down the hall.

Her bedroom.

She hadn’t left any windows open. Had she?

The storm outside howled, rain lashing against the glass. She grabbed the nearest weapon—a heavy candlestick—and inched toward the hallway.

Her bedroom door was slightly ajar.

She always closed it.

The candle flickered as she pushed the door open.

The room was empty.

But the closet door—wide open.

She never left it like that.

Her breath came in shallow gasps as she stepped forward, gripping the candlestick tighter.

Then—

A whisper of movement. A shadow shifting inside.

Her heart stopped.

She yanked the closet door open—

Nothing.

Just her clothes, swaying slightly, as if disturbed by a breeze.

But the window was locked.

She exhaled, shoulders slumping in relief.

Then—

A cold breath against her neck.

The candle snuffed out.

Darkness swallowed her whole.

A hand clamped over her mouth.

“You should’ve left when you had the chance.”

The voice was low. Familiar.

Mark.

Her ex. The one who had sworn he’d never let her go.

She twisted, elbowing him hard in the ribs. He grunted, grip loosening just enough for her to wrench free.

She ran.

The storm raged outside, rain slashing at her skin as she sprinted to her car. Her hands shook as she fumbled with the keys.

Start. Start. START.

The engine roared to life.

She didn’t look back as she peeled out of the parking lot.

Her breath came in ragged gasps as she sped down the highway. The rain made it hard to see, but she didn’t dare slow down.

Then—

A voice from the backseat.

“You didn’t really think it’d be that easy, did you?”

Her blood turned to ice.

Mark was already in the car.

Epilogue: The Night That Never Ended

The police found Emma’s car abandoned on the side of the road the next morning.

No sign of her.

No sign of Mark.

But sometimes, on stormy nights, the neighbors swear they hear three slow knocks on Emma’s old door.

And inside, a single candle flickers—

Then goes out.
