An ode to my 33rd birthday

So I woke up on the morning of February 5, 2026 and guess what and you know what I realized? It’s my 33rd birthday. Do you know what that means? Yes, technically I’m getting old, but what I couldn’t have guessed was this would be one of the best days of my life.

5:30 a.m. I beat my alarm which was set to go off at 6 so I could get up for work on this wonderful Thursday morning. I get up and get dressed for work and I get a text message from my best friend Ashley who tells me “Come early to work bday bitch”. Now this is normal verbiage for her, but the funny part is her telling me to get to work early, considering that I’m always early for work anyway by my nerdy punctual nature. So I get to work early as I always do and she’s not there, not surprisingly because always just getting there in a Nick of time.

I sent her a text message joking about it and she calls me with her excuse of struggling to get out of her driveway due to the snow and I’m just like yada yada, no excuses, just hurry up and get here. So she arrives at work and parks next to me. When she gets out of her car she has a bag full of stuff in hand and I have to say I was surprised. I mean she always gets me a great gift, but this time she had a bag full of things.

When she revealed the contents of that bag I was blown away. First off, she got me a bag of plain chips and a bottle of ginger ale which she always picks on me for loving like an old man as she would say. She had a pair of Marvel Comics pajama pants which I love and was happy to have a new pair of pajama pants, but it was the last gift that sent me. The last gift she revealed to me was a STUN GUN.

This was the most surprising gift EVER. I never thought about having one before but since I got it I found it kinda exciting. Everybody agreed that I needed it and we got off work she showed me how to use it and even gave it a nickname: BBW (Bitch Boy Weapon). How did my birthday progress after that. We for starters a million and one people sent me happy birthday wishes. My brother in law gave me 20 dollars to buy birthday dinner with, one of my coworkers gave me 20 to buy even more food with and I went over my grandma’s and even she gave me 20 to get something to eat with. Needless to say, I knew I was gonna be eating good for the weekend.

All day long I was just in this great mood like never before. By the end of the day I realized something: At 33 years old I’ve earned a college degree and have now become a published author who is continuing to grow in my passion as a writer. I’m also surrounded by countless people who love and care about me and I have lived a life that wasn’t always pretty, but is the greatest that I can imagine living and has been filled with purpose and blessings that I genuinely never saw coming.

So yes, I am taking another trip around the sun as they say and im definitely not lucky to have made it to the age of 33. I am blessed by the man up top to have made it to 33 years.

Check out my first book ever Melanin Memoirs out now on Amazon and Kindle

~~Happy 33rd birthday to me.

Happy belated birthday to you! Congrats on your accomplishments and let me tell you, my 30's have been some of my best years ever! I am unsure why the 20's are so glamorized because for me, those years were not it. I have never been more comfortable in my own skin than I am now.
