Extra Note
Hi everyone! You may have noticed a few changes today. First, I’ve started adding subheadings to make it easier to navigate through different sections of the articles. Second, there’s now an ‘About the Author’ section at the end of each story, so you can easily find my bio whenever you need it. Some details from the intro have been removed since the bio will now cover everything. Sorry for the lengthy intro — let’s dive right into the story!
The Medieval War
A dramatic battlefield during a thunderstorm, with a lone warrior drenched in rain standing on a soaked field at the edge of a dark forest. Lightning reveals a massive advancing army as a castle burns in the distance.
I watched with an unwavering gaze as the sun slowly sank into the horizon and threads of lights lingered in the sky, mingling with the rolling clouds. The clouds changed from milky white to dull grey. Torrents of frigid water poured out of them and saturated the field. As the night got colder, the storm gradually intensified. A shaft of lightning shot out of the swirling clouds in the obsidian sky. I could also hear steady marching in the distance.
I was on the defence, but it was more than that. I had to defend against menacing warriors who had conquered all the other kingdoms. Ours is the final domino that they would knock down. Their deafening footsteps grew louder as they proceeded through the Dark Forest, a forest that bordered the kingdom. I could hear my own pulse and heart palpitating with the chilling fear of death. I paced through the drenched grass and soil and stood a few metres away from the rim of majestic trees that intimidated me. The wind was trashing against a tree, causing the branches to whip about in the storm. Finally, the troops arrived. Not ten, not hundred, not even a thousand, but a million troops.
My limbs felt as if shackled to iron chains as the army pointed their arrows at me. I heaved in consternation as I tried to swallow the bitterness down my throat. I knew that the battle was fatal, so I went all out. I hastily drew my razor-sharp silver sword that glistened in the luminous moonlight. I slid to my right and sliced the ankles of two warriors. I got up while they screamed and squirmed in agony. I swung my sword once more and I grazed someone in front of me. A colossal gash appeared on his arm, and his squeals echoed through the frosty air. A quiver of resistance shot through my mind as I contemplated my next move.
Total chaos ensued when a barrage of arrows spiralled towards me. I swiftly deflected them with my ancient, enchanted aegis, which I only used for deadly battles. I then saw my golden chance ahead…the forest.
I dashed into the Dark Forest, as it was my only hope. Danger lingered in the air, sensing my fear. Fear snaked around my heart as I adjusted to the darkness. I knew I should not stay at the forest as the kingdom fell, and stepped out of the blackness, sprinting towards the castle. It was time for real battle.
I shoved through the congested corridor and stabbed unknown figures. My heart was pumping with adrenaline as I combated the troops. Then, when they began firing flaming boulders, chaos ruled.
The orange clutches of the inferno wrapped fiery fingers around the entire castle turning it into a gloomy, eerie place. Pandemonium broke out as people fled in fear, hoping to escape the roaring flames. We then hurled rocks and the tables turned. Although several cowards left, the patriots stayed fighting for victory. We kept fighting and weapons flew everywhere. Unexpectedly, someone shot an arrow, which zoomed straight into my thigh. I fell to the floor, my vision blurring. Random images flashed through my mind. Blood. Fire. Swords. Bows. Arrows. Death.
Bows and arrows lay scattered around me, and I knew what to do. I used my last iota of energy to pick up a bow and shot a volley of metal arrows at the final warrior, and then saw black.
