The night air hung low over the countryside as the two figures made their way down the lane, draped by Spanish moss trees. The night was a typical southern night, muggy even at nine in the evening, with thousands of fireflies lighting the night. As the two continued to walk down the lane, the night sky rumbled and lightning flashed across it.
At the end of the lane, they finally came to a small lake and the dock that stretched out into its murky depths. They sat at the end with their feet making slow circles in the warm water. Turning, they gazed into each others tear filled eyes. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the only sounds that could be heard was the water and the distance sounds of mating frogs. Silently they stood and took each others hands. They both knew what they were about to do. Everything had led up to this moment, to this place, this decision. They leaned in and shared a final soft tender kiss.
The moment was shattered by the noise of the townspeople running down the lane towards them . Hand in hand, they turned and jumped into the murky waters. Still holding hands they swam out to the center, as they heard the people yelling their names, begging them to stop. It was too late to listen, they would not be stopped. They couldn't live without each other. They would not be torn apart. A splash sounded as several people entered the water to try to stop them.
"I love you Brandon." "I love you too Joseph." And with those last words they slipped beneath the surface before they could be reached. The people along the shore screamed and were in shock as they watched the horror unfolding before them. Some were thinking about their roles in what was taking place before their very eyes. They were beginning to regret their roles in this unfolding tragedy. They were hoping the boys could be got to in time.
Panic was evident in the faces of the ones who were in the water trying to locate the boys. It took several minutes of searching the murky water before the boys were found and hauled to shore. No signs of life were visible and they began CPR. They couldn't let them die. They had no idea how strongly the boys felt about being together until their notes were discovered.
At this moment, a bright light began to fill the sky and people looked up. In this broad beam of light were two magnificent looking people; a blond green eyed woman and a brown haired, blue eyed man. They came to a rest at the boys feet. Their eyes were welled up with tears at the scene before them. Each bent down and took a boy in their arms.
"We have come to take these boys to a place where they can love each other in peace. Where no one will hurt them or scorn them for how they feel," said the woman. "Love is a beautiful gift that should be cherished and nurtured. You have forgotten that and your hearts are hardened by hatred", said the man. As they spoke, their tears fell from their eyes upon the boys who returned to life. The woman spoke again. "Think about what you have done because of the malice in your hearts. Love is precious and should never be punished."
The light encompassed four now, instead of two and they ascended into the sky leaving behind the townspeople in awe and whispering to each other; trying to understand the miracle that had just occurred.
