The Mapmaker's Secret
Chapter Three: The Secret in the Sand

The journey to Delphi was rough.
Elias and Thalia rode in a weather-worn cart through the craggy hills of central Greece, once sacred land now pockmarked with forgotten battle scars and bandit roads. Elias studied the copied map every chance he got, deciphering layers of forgotten symbols and celestial patterns etched beneath the Greek text.
“This isn't just a location,” he murmured, “it’s an alignment — solar, lunar, and…” He hesitated. “Processional. The temple we’re looking for only reveals itself at a specific time. A shadow must fall precisely on the old omphalos stone.”
“You’re saying we have to wait for the sun to hit a stone the right way?” Thalia asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Not wait,” Elias said. “Be there exactly when it happens.”
They arrived just before dusk. Beneath the ruins of the well-known Temple of Apollo, hidden behind a half-collapsed column, Elias found the stone — the ancient omphalos, carved with labyrinthine grooves.
As the moon rose and the sun dipped, the shadow of a broken statue’s head fell across the grooves — and revealed a pattern.
A keyhole.
Using a brass medallion that had hung from Thalia’s neck since childhood, Elias unlocked a hidden stairway beneath the stone — untouched for two millennia.
They descended, torches flickering, into the earth's memory.
