The Letter She Never Sent

A Love That Waited Too Long

By Sudais ZakwanPublished 2 days ago 3 min read

Lila sat at her small wooden desk, staring at the blank piece of paper in front of her. The sun had just set, casting a soft orange glow through the window, and the room was quiet except for the ticking of the old clock on the wall. She had been meaning to write this letter for weeks, months even, but every time she tried, the words seemed to vanish.

The letter was for Alex, her childhood friend and the person who had quietly become the most important part of her life. They had grown up together, sharing secrets, laughter, and dreams. But somewhere along the way, Lila realized that what she felt for Alex was no longer just friendship. It was love. Deep, honest, and terrifying love.

She dipped her pen in ink and started writing, carefully choosing each word. “Alex, I don’t know if you feel the same, but I need to tell you how I feel…” Her hand shook slightly. Memories of the times they spent together filled her mind: long walks by the lake, late-night talks under the stars, and the quiet moments when they simply sat together, feeling perfectly comfortable in silence.

But fear held her back. What if Alex didn’t feel the same? What if their friendship ended because of this letter? Lila had always been careful with her heart, never wanting to risk losing what she already had. And yet, the thought of never telling Alex was unbearable.

Days passed, and the letter stayed on her desk. She would glance at it in the morning, then leave it untouched as the day went by. She told herself she would give it to Alex tomorrow, but tomorrow never came. Life, as it always does, moved forward with its small routines and responsibilities. Lila began to wonder if the right moment would ever arrive.

One rainy afternoon, Alex called. His voice sounded tired but happy to hear hers. They talked about small things at first, then about dreams and hopes. Lila felt a surge of emotion, wishing she could confess in that moment, but the words stuck in her throat. She hung up, feeling both relieved and sad. The letter remained on her desk, a silent witness to her hesitation.

Weeks later, Lila received news that Alex was moving to another city for work. Her heart sank. She knew that waiting any longer would mean losing her chance forever. That night, she finally picked up the letter, read it one last time, and with trembling hands, walked to Alex’s apartment.

Alex opened the door, surprised to see her standing there in the rain. Before he could say anything, Lila handed him the letter. “I… I need you to read this,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. He took it, confusion and concern in his eyes. Lila turned and walked away, leaving him to read the words she had kept locked inside her heart for so long.

Hours later, Alex returned. His eyes were filled with tears, but he smiled softly. “Lila… I feel the same. I’ve been waiting for you to say it.” Relief and joy washed over her, and for the first time in months, she felt truly free. The fear, the hesitation, and the waiting were gone, replaced by the warmth of love finally spoken.

They stood together, rain falling around them, laughing and crying at the same time. The city streets blurred, but nothing else mattered. That night, Lila learned a lesson she would never forget: love is worth the risk, worth the fear, and worth every unsent letter and every quiet moment of hope.

From that day on, Lila and Alex’s lives were no longer separate paths. They were joined, not by coincidence, but by courage—the courage to speak a truth that had waited too long.
