The Leonardo Paradox
Chapter 4: Shadows of the Medici

The next morning found Sarah in borrowed clothes, bent over Leonardo's workbench as dawn light filtered through the workshop's high windows. She had spent the night studying the manuscript, comparing its contents to Leonardo's current notes while he worked on what he would only call "the device."
"Your Italian is improving," came a warm voice from the doorway. Sarah looked up to see a young man in rich velvet clothing, his dark hair falling in fashionable waves. He carried himself with the easy confidence of nobility.
"Lorenzo," Leonardo called without looking up from his work. "Right on time."
Sarah recognized him from her historical research – Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, Leonardo's patron and confidant. But something felt off about his presence, a nagging doubt she couldn't place.
"The Guardians are growing impatient," Lorenzo said, moving to examine Leonardo's latest sketches. "And they're not the only ones watching your workshop." His eyes flickered to Sarah. "Your arrival has caused quite a stir among... certain circles."
"The circles you're working for, perhaps?" Leonardo's tone remained casual, but his hands stilled over his work.
Lorenzo's smile didn't waver. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean, old friend. I'm merely here to ensure your latest commission proceeds as planned." He turned to Sarah. "Tell me, what do you make of our Leonardo's remarkable device?"
Sarah chose her words carefully. "It's unlike anything in the historical record." She watched Lorenzo's reaction closely. "Almost as if it was deliberately erased."
"History is written by those who shape it, not those who merely record it," Lorenzo replied. His hand moved to his belt, where an ornate dagger hung. "Though I suppose you'd know that better than most, wouldn't you?"
The workshop door burst open before Sarah could respond. A group of men in dark robes poured in – not the Guardians from before, but something different. Their robes bore the symbol Sarah remembered from the manuscript's crate.
"Il Tempo non aspetta," Lorenzo called out, drawing his dagger. Time doesn't wait.
Leonardo moved with surprising speed for a man of learning, grabbing Sarah's arm and pulling her toward a concealed door behind a tapestry. "Run!" he hissed. "They can't get the manuscript!"
"But what about you?" Sarah clutched the leather-bound volume to her chest.
"I've survived worse than the Societá del Tempo." He pressed the brass compass from yesterday into her free hand. "Meet me at the Duomo at midnight. And Sarah?" His eyes met hers intently. "Trust no one who claims to serve time itself."
Sarah fled through the hidden passage as chaos erupted in the workshop behind her. The passage led down, spiraling beneath the streets of Florence through what must have been ancient Roman ruins. The compass in her hand hummed softly, its numerous dials spinning in patterns she couldn't comprehend.
She emerged into a small courtyard and nearly collided with a hooded figure. Her heart stopped until the figure pushed back her hood, revealing the woman from the Guardians.
"Quickly," the woman said, "while Lorenzo's men are occupied. I can help you understand what's really at stake."
"Why should I trust you?"
The woman pulled out a familiar object – Sarah's silver compact mirror from yesterday. "Because unlike the Societá, we're trying to protect time, not control it." She opened the compact to reveal not a mirror, but what looked like a miniature version of Leonardo's mechanical drawings. "And because I can show you what that manuscript really is."
From somewhere above came shouts and the sound of running feet. Sarah looked at the compass in her hand, remembering Leonardo's warning about trusting those who claimed to serve time. But she also remembered Lorenzo's too-perfect arrival and the way he'd given that signal to the attackers.
The woman extended her hand. "Choose quickly. The timeline is already changing."
Sarah took a deep breath and made her choice – one that she hoped wouldn't unravel the very history she was living through.
