The Gift of Magic

My life changed the day I opened the generic looking brown wrapped parcel. I never expected what was about to happen. How could I? But let me tell you about it.

I lived an ordinary life in the middle of an ordinary Iowa town. I was an average looking female and I even worked a common job as a paramedic. I had been a paramedic for ten years for a busy city ambulance service.

The only other thing I had to occupy my time was my photography trips to area comic cons and anime events. I loved doing photography and capturing all the fun costumes and creativity these groups always had. The fun and energy in the air was exhilarating.

This convention was a bit different from the others I had attended. There was a unique and beautiful woman that approached me. She shook my hand and introduced herself as Jewel. Her eyes caught my attention. They were an iridescent purple color, some of the most unique eyes I had ever seen. At first glance, I thought she was perhaps wearing contacts to accentuate her costume. They were not contacts. How I knew that, I really had no idea, but I knew they were real.

When she touched my hand there was the strangest feeling of connection that I had never known before. I felt immediately comfortable with her and almost as if there was an ancient familial connection. I shook it off and took her picture while making small talk. She thanked me and said in a soft voice, “You are worthy. Please use the gift wisely.” She smiled a mysterious smile and disappeared into the crowd.

I finished the show and packed up my hotel room to head back home. When I checked out from the hotel, the front desk told me that I had received a package. I was puzzled but accepted it and headed to my car.

I looked at the package more closely after I loaded my suitcase and equipment into the back of my car. It was a small package wrapped in a plain brown paper sack type wrapping. The only marking on it was my name written neatly in a calligraphy penmanship. The only other visible marking was a very small JM written at the top left corner in the same pen.

I shrugged and tucked the package into my camera bag to look at more closely when I got home. My drive was uneventful, but I was tired after my two-hour drive and unpacked my car into my living room. I was too tired to care about putting everything away and knew I had a twenty-four hour shift ahead of me. I went to bed, forgetting all about the gift in my camera bag.

A crazy 48 hours later, I arrived home and collapsed into my recliner. My twenty-four had turned into a 48 hour shift as one of my coworkers called in sick. It had definitely been a full moon type of an extended shift.

I looked at my bags sitting untouched from two days earlier and sighed heavily. No way was I unpacking all that tonight. I was just way too tired. I opted for a shower and went to bed.

The next morning, I woke up feeling much more refreshed and ready to finally clean up my mess. I unpacked my suitcase and started a load of laundry, then went to my camera bag to start going through photos to get ready to send to my clients. That was when the small package fell out onto the table.

I had forgotten about the package until now. I tore off the plain brown wrapping and inside was a small red box. As I tried to open it, I rubbed across the top of it and noticed a very small snake etched into the top in the shape of an infinity symbol.

I got the lid off and inside was a golden stone on a chain. I reached in and ran my finger across the stone. The stone let off the brightest golden flash and I was temporarily blinded. Suddenly I found myself on the floor and a warmth washed over my body. I felt dizzy and as my head was spinning, I noticed I was no longer on the floor, but floating about a foot off the floor.

I was quickly back on the ground but still felt dizzy. I slowly sat up and looked dazedly around. I felt different, like something inside me had suddenly shifted. I slowly made my way up to my feet and looked in the mirror.

I blinked and had to hold onto the edge of the sink. I wasn’t sure who was looking back at me in the mirror. I wasn’t looking at my ordinary face any longer. The eyes looking back at me were a molten gold color. The nose was now more tipped up, my cheekbones were sharper. My once dirty blonde chin length hair was now a beautiful blonde color and was past my shoulders. I reached my hands up and gingerly touched my face. I couldn’t believe at the face that was staring back at me was now actually my face.

I stumbled back, stunned at what had just happened. I blinked a few more times and the face didn’t change. I now took a look down at the rest of my body. My once average size ten body, with a slightly rounded stomach was now curved perfectly in all the right spots, my breasts were perky and perfect and my hips and butt were every woman’s dream.

“What the hell is going on?” I said out loud to the face looking back at me. I turned my head side to side and noticed my ears for the first time. I now had subtly pointed ears. I rubbed both of them to be sure what I was seeing was real. I tilted my head to the side to inspect my new pointy ears and noticed a tattoo up on my ear. It was the same snake infinity symbol that had been on the box.

As I puzzled over my new body and face, my doorbell rang. “Could my day get any weirder?” I said before looking through the peephole. I wasn’t sure I should answer the door in my current condition. Nobody would recognize me and who knows what would happen in that case. But standing on my porch was none other than the stranger from the show, Jewel.

I opened the door slowly and suddenly knew who this gift was from.

“May I come in?” I opened the door wider and let Jewel enter.

“Please have a seat.” I gestured to the couch. I sat down silently across from her and watched her face.

Jewel smiled sheepishly back at me. “Wow, you look amazing. Are you pleased with your transformation?”

“Um, currently I am more in shock. What is happening to me? Is this permanent?”

Jewel smiled broadly at me. “Yes, it is definitely permanent. You see you are now part of our elf clan.”

My mouth must have dropped open. Jewel let out a small giggle that somehow made me relax a bit. “Seriously? Is this for real?” I looked at her dumbstruck. How could any of this be happening?

Jewel patted my hand to comfort me. Her touch eased my stress and calmed me instantly I wasn’t sure what about her put me at ease. “Okay I think I deserve an explanation.”

Jewel sat back and told me a story about my distant familial bloodline, and how she had been searching for me for a very long time. She explained to me that once they find someone of the bloodline and that we are deemed worthy of the gift, that our power from our bloodline will be restored in us. Once it has been accepted and we are truly worthy, we are transformed.

“So, this is my true self?”

“Yes. You will be amazed at all that comes with your transformation. You will live a very very long life, you will have amazing powers that you can grow and develop. You will also be able to move freely around the world without the earthly ties of being a mere human.”

I blinked several more times. “But how do these things happen?”

“They honestly just come to you. It is truly a freeing and true blessing to accept your elf form.”

Jewel stayed with me over the next few weeks and helped me learn more about my heritage and legacy. I was floored by the possibilities. I was no longer constrained and worried about money or bills or being alone. As I learned more about my new life, I also met several more elfs in my area that were just like me. I now had a family. I now belonged.

Opening that small brown package was the best gift I could have ever received. I learned that I would get to bless the next one in our clan when the time was right. I couldn’t be more happy.
