It was a dark night when James found himself alone in his dimly lit apartment, gazing at the half-empty glass of whiskey before him. His thoughts swirled like the smoke from his cigarette, thick and suffocating. Occasionally, his mind would wander back to that moment—the one mistake, the one choice that had sent his life spiraling into chaos.

At 29, James appeared to have it all— a decent job, a small but cozy apartment, and friends who cared about him. Yet behind his eyes lay a relentless storm, one that had started on a fateful day years ago.

It had been a quiet summer afternoon when James made that decision. It felt harmless at the time—just a temporary choice, a minor detour. He was in his final year of college, brimming with ambition and dreams for his future. He had always aspired to be a writer, to leave a lasting impact on the world with his words. But when the chance to take a well-paying job with a major company arose, everything shifted.

It seemed like the right choice at the time. His parents had always emphasized the importance of stability, and the offer was simply too good to pass up. The salary was attractive, the benefits were impressive, and the idea of a secure future was hard to overlook. The corporate world beckoned, and James, with his youthful idealism and naivety, took the plunge.

Initially, it was everything he had dreamed of. He wore tailored suits, participated in meetings held in sleek, glass-walled boardrooms, and received accolades for his quick learning. But as the months rolled on, the excitement began to wane. Days started to blend together—routine, predictable, stifling. The dreams he had cherished since childhood, the ones about writing stories and creating something meaningful, seemed to drift further away with every hour spent in front of spreadsheets and on conference calls.

He kept telling himself it was just a phase, that he would return to his passion when the moment was right. But that moment never seemed to arrive. The more he succeeded in his new role, the more he felt detached from the person he used to be—the one who thrived on the joy of writing, who spent late nights jotting down ideas and capturing fleeting moments in words.

James had buried his passion so deeply that, eventually, he forgot it was even there.

The choice to abandon writing came with its own set of consequences. His relationships took a hit. Friends who were once close began to drift away as he became engrossed in his new life. His parents, proud yet confused, never fully grasped the transformation. They never urged him to return to writing, believing that the corporate route was what he desired, what was best for him.

But as he sat alone in his apartment, whiskey glass in hand, James recognized just how much he had sacrificed. There was a profound emptiness now, a void that no amount of success or material possessions could fill. The years spent pursuing someone else’s dream, the years he had squandered, weighed heavily on his heart. And yet, it felt too late to turn back.

The real mistake wasn't the job; it was losing touch with who he truly was, the person he had been before everything changed.

A bitter laugh slipped from his lips, mingling with the smoke as he tossed the cigarette into the ashtray. He grabbed the glass, the amber liquid searing his throat as it went down. Yet, it did little to dull the persistent ache within.

He pondered—was it all worth it? Would he ever find a way back?
