THE GATE KEEPER AND THE STONE

The Quest of a Warrior

"I glided against a black abyss, with tiny dots of light spattered against its plane."

Prologue

Aunya lifted her heavy eye lids to see where the light was coming from. It was much too early to rise for the day, so what could possibly be burning her eyes with such great intensity?

“Get up trainee!” Shouted a loud deep voice from above her. Aunya jumped to her feet at once, her heart leaped into her throat, she could feel it pulsing at top speed. She fought the urge to throw it up, and instead forced a hard gulp, before taking in a deep needed breath.

“Are you ready for this warrior? Cause you don’t look ready!” Boomed the voice, who’s image remained a mere shadow behind the bright light, being held up to my face amidst the darkness.

“Yes, sir! I’m ready sir!” I yelped back. “Good, you’ve got five minutes to get your butt outside. Don’t be late!”

The room went completely black, and I fumbled for the lantern at my bedside, allowing its dim light and many shadows to spread across the room. I stripped my nightdress off, and stuffed each foot into the long thick pant legs, buttoning up every button from my waist to my ribs. I threw my white cotton blouse over my head, stuffing my fists through each arm, before shoving my arms into the holes of my mesh metal vest, and then sealed all three buckles across my chest with accuracy. Finally, I pulled on a pair of long wool sox, before jumping into the hard black boots at the end of my bed. I grabbed the travel pack that was resting on the chair beside my closet, and swiftly heaved it over each shoulder, while running down the long winding stair case amidst the dark, of the early dawn. Only a small light crystal which sat on the table next to the main doors gave me any sense of direction, as to where to go. I flipped the hair tie from around my wrist, over my fingers, and around the long loose braids that swung uncontrollably from my head. I rushed for the door with one last moment to spare, stopping in front of the clay water base that sat on the table next to the light crystal. I splashed the tepid water over my face with one hand, and took a large gulp with the other. I stopped outside the doors swishing the water source between my teeth and around my tongue, before spitting the fluid from my mouth. It splashed into a small puddle, as it hit the ground outside the compound wall of Maji Manor. I jumped into line with three others, who I was certain had been woken in the same manner. “March!” Commander Ukmahar commanded, and we did.

We marched down several lanes of the village, before reaching the Centre Falls, where seventeen other new members were being qualified, trained and challenged for initiation, into the honourable protective service unit called, the Gate Keepers.

This was a long awaited moment for Aunya, although she and the others had been warned about this event and the manner in which it would begin, she had still been completely terrified. Her wake up call had not been so pleasant, but she was now delighted and excited. All the waiting was finally over, and the adventure Aunya had been anticipating was about to begin.

“Look around you, trainees! You have proven to be the most qualified among your peers. You’ll notice the numbers have declined, expect them to decline further. However, you should be proud that you’ve made it this far. But now the real training begins! This is where we separate the boys from the nwoke.” The commander grinned, and then paused as Director Lukmar nudged him, and nodded towards Aunya. The commander cleared his throat and quickly corrected himself, “And of course the girls, from the nwaayni.” He finished awkwardly.

The nwoke were the mature bearers of masculine energy. They were protectors, providers and guiders. They were physically dominant in strength, and they often felt the need to be noticed for their strength abilities socially. This often gave way to healthy competition, but was also a precursor to power hungry characteristics, that could cloud good judgment if left unguided. Balance was an essential element in Octavia, and the universe. The nwaanyi helped provided this gift of balance as the mature bearers of feminine energy. They were more powerful in many ways than the nwoke. The nwaanyi were nurtures, life givers, builders and organizers, they also had great authority, but were less thirsty for a physical power, and more hungry for a spiritual peace. Whatever was placed in their hands, and in their hearts was multiplied. Both energies played a great role amongst the states, the nations, and the universe.

Octavia was one of the eight Nations, it was guardian, and giver of the water source. Many considered Octavia, the most powerful of all the nations. It was made up of five states, each state contributing to the nations well being and survival. Miridia was the land of light and fire; the energy source. Oxabia was the land of air and wind; the breath source. The state of Ixibia was the land of soil and fruit; the provision source, and finally, Serenia, the land of tranquility, peace and enlightenment; the spiritual source. The state of Octavia who’s name mirrored the name of the nation, was the land of water; the blood and life source. All other nations possessed the same resources Octavia did, except the gift of the water source. Octavia was responsible for sharing out the resource that flowed through the rivers, lakes, and brooks. This included the largest body of the life source, The Great Falls. The waters fell from deep within the Octavious Mountains, where the Emperor and Empress could best control and protect the flow of the liquid source, preserving it for every state, every nation, and every generation.

From where Aunya stood, in line next to her fellow trainees, off in the far distance, she observed and admired the mist of the falls, drifting with the same warm breeze that softly swept across her face. The Octavious Mountains could be seen from almost any where in the state of Octavia. The lands and valleys in between were carpeted in deep green hues, and sprinkled with the colours and scents, of an array of floral delights, that popped up and out from shrubs, bushes and trees. The trees varied in shape, size and colour, but almost every one had thick trunks with leaves that sat high, and danced amidst the winds as they reached for the skies. The valley and the mountains were filled with life and beauty, and so were their inhabitants.

Aunya smiled again towards The Great Falls, as she strategized in her mind the fastest way to reach them. She knew they were the first stop on the map that would lead her to where she needed to go, and she was determined to retrieve the last thing that would make her dream of guarding the Gates of Octavia, a reality. The director of the Gate Keeping Sanctions stepped forward.

“In order to get to the light, you must go through the dark. This will not be a simple or an easy task, but you have all been well trained for this moment. Your training should have prepared you to be physically, mentally, and spiritually, strong. You are warriors, and your services are needed. We are rooting for you to make it back here holding a treasure, a symbol of our ancient heritage, created by the most deep and powerful currents of the water source, and a token of your bravery. Your place and your fate will be sealed, when the dark returns to light, and the chaos is restored to order. You will find clarity, remain focused, and unto you will be revealed the stone.” Director Lukmar stood back.

Aunya was ready, she gripped her fist tightly around the scroll which contained the map, that would guide her on her quest. And thus, the story begins.

The Great Falls; “Where there is a will, there is a way”

“When I say begin, you will begin your quest.” Director Lukmar instructed. “This trek is one you must begin and complete on your own, but remember, you are not amongst enemies, but competitors. If someone is in need, use your discretion and be of good character to help a fellow comrade, but also don’t be fooled or deceived, be mindful, that you do not fall victim to a ploy or a distraction to slow you down. Use your intuition, tap into that part of you that you’ve been taught to ignore. Fore by Octavian standards, intuition is faulty and unreliable, but in survival you will find it most useful. To be a Gates Keeper, the one thing you must learn quickly is to trust yourself, your instincts, and your heart. Also, don’t forget your training and your tools.

Aunya knew the director was referring to Nukuwe. She remembered her father teaching her some basic movements and deep breathing exercises when she was much younger. Nukuwe was the art of peaceful living, healing and balance. It was a disciplinary practice taught to balance the most important aspects of ones existence, the mind, the body, and the soul. The practice included nutritional requirements, deep conscious breathing, mindfulness of self and nature, spiritual connection with the highest Source, and ritualistic combat moves, that Aunya was only starting to master. Each aspect took years to master. As a beginner, most of the focus was spent on nutrition, breathing and combat, while the other aspects were taught, in order to become a true master at Nukuwe, each aspect required time and focus. Nothing done greatly, is done quickly. Aunya heard the voice of Master Obah, her spiritual master, echo in her ears. She was confident in her abilities, and the training she had received thus far. The tools Director Lukmar had referred to, were now lain across the ground before them. Commander Ukmahar cleared his throat, as he often did before he spoke. “Choose your tools of weaponry wisely. As the Director has mentioned, when he says begin, you will step forward, pick your tool, and follow your map to your destination where your fate awaits. Stay alert, be brave, and the first ten, if that many of you even return with a lythmeric stone, will be awarded a place at the Gates of Octavia. You’ll continue your training, and assist in protective services at one of the most guarded Nations in all the lands.” The Commander stepped back.

My eyes were on the bow and arrow set on the right, with the beautifully decorated yellow feathered arrows. The set would fit perfectly in my travel pack without too much added weight. The selection of tools ranged from daggers, spears, and bows and arrows. My heart began to race, and I felt a dip in the pit of my stomach, as I kept my eyes on the set without averting my attention to any of my surroundings. I trusted my instincts as I had been recently trained to do, and sensed we would be told to begin in moments. This was the beginning to what could be the greatest opportunity of my life. My mind wandered for a moment, as I recalled my father’s words, “You are a warrior at heart my sweet Aunya. Your uniqueness is your superpower, and if anyone tells you differently, graciously decline their rebuttals with a nod and that beautiful smile. Fear not, for fear is just an illusion, perpetuated and enlarged by your regard. Avert your attention to love, its frequency stifles fear. Focus on the courage of the heart, and on bravery of the mind. My young warrior, you are fearless, therefore you have less to fear. Move in confidence, the faith frequency allows you the ability to be in tune with self, with nature, with Source, and you will find a way to overcome any obstacles you choose. Reach for love my sweet Aunya, that’s what I always do, and I’ve never had a regret.” He smiled, and I returned his smile, reflecting the shape of his mouth and the curves of his lips. His memory faded quickly, and I snapped back to the present moment. “I am a warrior.” I whispered to myself, readying, and steadying myself for the moment I heard Director Lukmar shout, “Begin!”

I ran to the bow and arrow I had been eyeing, and without any issues, I retrieved it. I took my travel pack off and placed it strategically in the long front pocket of my pack, making it easily accessible. With one swift movement I could have both bow and arrow in my grips, if required. I returned my pack to my back and shoulders before opening the map that I had crumpled slightly, as I had been holding it tightly in my fist. It was an added moment of assurance, I knew my way to the Great Falls very well. I had been many times, but this was different, and formality played a role. I looked around at my fellow comrades, there was about twenty of us in total, many of them were checking their routes, I stood watching for only a moment. I stared down the lane in the direction that lead to the all powerful and captivating, water source. I began with quick, long strides towards, what I believed was my destiny. The green grassy hilltops looked lush, and soft to the touch, while in contrast the sharp, jagged blue rocks, burst from the depths of the land far, far beneath them. The immense height of the mountains lifted the flowing waters amidst the skies far above the villages, valleys, and lands below. The Great Falls held mystery and history of the beginnings, and the ends of Niwajuwa and the universe. It was believed that the Great Falls were source of all sources, the greatest resource, and the giver of life. They were also home to a glorious ecosystem of plants and animals. The royal compounds sat nestled in their crevasses, exempt was the chief compound that housed the royal castle. It sat elevated, as high as the surrounding mountains, but in the centre of the roaring falls, connected only by the long and narrow road that lead up to the entry gates. Within the compound walls were centuries of stories, of Emperors and Empresses who had once ruled the Empire of Octavia.

For many years there had been clashes between some of the neighbouring Nations. Octavia had always done its best to be fair and gracious with its distribution, and gifting of the water source to all Nations. The story behind the clashes begins many generations ago. The son of the Emperor of Twendola had fallen in love with the daughter of the Emperor and Empress of Octavia. Their love was quickly challenged, and then forbidden. Like in many national traditions, guidelines, rules, and laws, that must be adhered to, the royal bloodline was considered sacred, and must remain as pure as possible. Royals were only permitted to court and marry an upstanding nwoke or nwaayni, depending particularly on the families status, blood, and nation. It was the offence of the separate nation that displeased the Emperor of Twendola. It is said the son and daughter of the two separate Empires defied their parents, after their love had been denied. Together they jumped from the Great Falls choosing to die together, rather than live without each other.

The tragedy left a rift between the two Nations, and a gap of a royal generation, as they had both been destined to rule their Nations as Emperor and Empress. The grief of the Twendolian Emperor spilled over into his political agendas, and he cursed Octavia, blaming them for his sons untimely death. He believed not enough had been done to stop the incident from taking place. The Octavian Emperor and Empress ensured that everything had been done to prevent the horrific incident, but the two lovers had slipped quietly past guards and into the night. They waited there for the crystal light to peak above the horizon, and that’s when a look out guard noticed them in the side of the mountains, he alarmed the other guards, and ordered the Emperor and Empress be woken. The couple was very far away, as the mountains created a huge gap between the outer circle of its many crests, and the inner plateau where the castle rested, surrounded by the waters a great distance below.

The water source rolled and roared freely over the mountains brinks, as they watched on in horror, waiting helplessly, hoping the guards would make it to their location before anything tragic could happen. The two young royals grew fearful with their discovery, as they watched the scene of deployed guards, and a frantic Emperor and Empress, off in the far distance of one of the look out towers. The young couple was said to have gripped each other tightly on their decent, into the beating of the deep dark depths of rolling currents at the bottom of The Great Falls.

Octavia’s royal family reminded the Twendola officials, and royals that they had lost their daughter too, and that their grief was just as deep, and just as real, and there had been no intent to harm anybody. The Twendolian Emperor was not satisfied with their claims, and blamed Octavia for his sons death, declaring a take-over of the Great Falls, so he could honour the land his son had transcended on, and make it sacred. This declaration was made on the day of the couples memorial. The heights of the mountains and the power of the waters ensured there were no physical aspects of the couple to mourn. Octavia had extended an invitation to memorialize and celebrate the lives of the young couple at the castle compound, honouring their memory at the place they had transcended. It was a tradition in many of Niwajuwa’s Nations, to make the place where someone had passed from one existence to the next, sacred. They had invited the Emperor and his family hoping to give them some closure. On his departure, heated words were exchanged, and a physical clash between guards unfolded, before the Twendolian Emperor cursed the Octavian royal family, and vowed to take over The Great Falls, to honour and avenge his sons death. In his grief, he blatantly disregarded the loss of their daughter, an utter disrespect to the Octavian royal family. They received the challenge with vengeance and retaliation, and the battles at the boarders began. It had been hundreds of generations, and there was still conflicts at the Octavian boarder, with Twendolian warriors.

Aunya continued towards the historic site, and was soon accompanied by a few of her fellow warriors, who were trying to attain the same destiny. Rendif and Moctar Poctaro, who used his whole name due to the common use of his first name, they kept stride beside her. “Finally, the day has arrived!” Rendif smiled excitedly. Aunya returned his smile, “Yes! Finally, but we’ve only just begun my friend.” She reminded.

Moctar laughed, “Yup, we have, and if you think I’m gonna show you guys any favour along the way, remember only half of us are going to be recruited. I love you both, but this isn’t a game. This is our future, our livelihood possibly. I can’t take any chances, I know you guys understand, because we're all in the same position.” He finished.

“Yes, Moctar you’re right about that, but I’m not going to pass up the opportunity to help a fellow warrior, especially if they’re in sincere need. Part of this journey is about testing our intuitive abilities, along with building and testing our character. I certainly hope you don’t fail due to such trivial traits as selfishness, pridefulness, and disloyalty. These have been the downfall of many who feel their rightful place is at the lead of the pack, yet they lack the bare minimum of what it is, and what it truly means to be a leader.” Aunya finished smugly.

“Oh come on Aunya, I was only playing.” Moctar Poctaro snickered, tapping her arm playfully as he begun to jog ahead. “Come on slow pokes, at least let’s get the advantage of distance.” The three comrades who had grown up together in the same community, and attended the same knowledge institute, now ran a long side each other in laughter and excitement. Aunya felt that this journey would truly test their friendship. As they rounded the last bend that lead up the long and winding laneway that lead to the gates of the castle, where the Commissioner of the OPS (Octavian Protective Services), several royal guards who accompanied the Emperor of Octavia, and the Octavian Ambassador, all awaited each warrior who arrived to give them instructions, and best wishes for the journey ahead. Several warriors arrived in groups just as Rendif, Moctar Poctaro and Aunya had. The Emperor addressed the small crowd that stood before him.

“Young warriors, it is essential that you stay focused, alert and safe. The stone you retrieve will be your greatest asset as a Gates Keeper, it is an honourable and a fate filled quest you are about to embark on. Your safe return with a lythmeric stone will not only ensure your place amongst the finest warriors that guard our precious gates, and the treasures beyond them, but will also be your ultimate weapon in battle and defence. I honour you all, and bless you with a safe return.” He finished and bowed slightly as he stepped back, allowing the Commissioner to step forward.

“The lythmeric stone you seek is more powerful than anything you’ve ever seen or experienced in your lifetime. Even the Omega Crystal protected at the Centre Falls in the Village Centre, doesn’t compare to the powers possessed by the lythmeric stone. It is the deep blue of the mountain side in its dormant form, but with a glassy exterior, making it stand out, from the common rock or stone. In use it begins to brighten and explodes with an energy and light that only a lythmeric stone can exude. You must handle it with care, and use the tactical lessons you’ve been given to handle it as soon as you encounter it, as not to destroy yourself, or anything else for that matter. The larger the stone, the greater the power you possess. Since the stone is a gift from the lands of Nunubia, only those worthy will be entitled to return with a one.” The Commissioner finished and looked around at the blank and confused faces of the new recruits before him. Their reactions were not uncommon, and never ceased to amuse him. Revealing a few more details about the stone, and the exact location where they would need to retrieve it, was always a small shock to the system. He grinned as he stepped back, and allowed the Octavian Ambassador to explain.

“Well, firstly I want to congratulate each of you for making it this far, but this is only the very beginning. Please remember to reserve your energy for when it will be most needed, and remember all the rigorous training you’ve endured was for a purpose.” He inhaled deeply for a moment before he continued. “The tragic story you’ve been taught about the Twendolian Emperor and the Octavian Empress, and the historical reasons our boarders have been so heavily guarded, since pretty much the beginning of time, is only partially true. Common belief must remain common, meaning you may not divulge this information to anyone, it is only being shared with you now, because in order to complete your journey successfully you must be completely aware of the truth. Where you are going not just anybody may enter, you will be tested every step of the way to ensure your worthiness, loyalty and both inner and outer strength. Glorious treasures, deep secrets, and the great stone, are about to be revealed to you.” The Ambassador cleared his throat, and finished, “The truth is that the story of the couple who plunged to their death was not a suicide at all, but rather a leap of faith, and a destiny to and through a portal we call Sufusobu. It’s located below and under the waters of The Great Falls. The truth is that the couple was destined to rule a world above us called, Wakakowe. In order to access this world you must first enter the portal, located within in its depths is a land called Nunubia, where they reign as King and Queen to this day. I know this may be a lot to take in, a new twist on an ancient tale, a few new names and places, which is why, if you are unable to make it back without a stone, your memories of these truths and your experiences beyond the portal, will be wiped out by the enchantments administered before you even leave Wakakowe. Your mission is to swim beneath the waters, find the portal, swim into Sufusobu, and then up to your left. Be careful, how you read your map, it looks like you must go right but remind yourself that you are not looking in from outside the map, but you’ll be looking in from within. Do not go right, you will encounter many obstacles if you do, go left, and swim up. There are many branches and vines, leaves and water life, there is only one place of rest, where you can breath freely, before you continue. You must follow the continual currents upwards and enter the portal of Wakakowe, where you will then have to find your way to the royal Empire of Nunubia. Each of you must find your own way, you may notice your maps shift and change, no two warriors must travel the same route. If you come across a fellow warrior in need, remember to trust your instincts, many things you encounter, may not be what they seem. When you reach Nunubia, your mission is to seek out the King and Queen. They are anxiously awaiting your arrival, for two very important reasons. First, so they can give you important information required to complete your quest, and second, their livelihood depends on having dedicated, strong, loyal, and trustworthy warriors to protect, not just the gates, but more importantly the Great Falls. Essentially, by protecting Octavia’s gates, you will be protecting the Great Falls, and most important of all, the portal. If the treasures, knowledge and level of powers within the ninth world of Wakakowe are discovered, and fall into the hands of the wrong Nation, it could be disastrous for us all. Our entire world could be destroyed. You will encounter challenges, set backs, and even deadly situations, but remember, where there is a will there is a way! Whatever you do, don’t give-up! There is a very crucial and delicate balance at stake, that is why we go through such great lengths to protect what lies within the depths and the heart of Nunubia. That is where you will find the answers that will lead you to a stone, specifically designed for you.” He breathed deeply through his nostrils, and sighed out loud as though even he was overwhelmed by all that he had just shared.

More warriors had arrived, and the instructions were being retold for their advantage. I knew there was no time to waste. I pulled my map form my pocket and opened it, only to see its order shift and change before my eyes. I was slightly startled, even though I had just been warned that it would do so. I looked on in amazement, and then looked over at Rendif and Moctar Poctaro, who must have been discovering the same wonderful phenomena. The only difference was that although some of our route would be similar, much of our journey would be different, set apart by direction and lessons, only our mission to retrieve the stone and return was the same at this point. Without any words, we hugged tightly, but quickly. “Best of success to you both.” I grinned, and then walked away to take a more in-depth look at my new map.

It appeared I would have to make my way down the treacherous mountainside to a specific spot behind the largest fall on the other side of the mountain. I felt my inner gut tighten, I was nervous, as my swimming skills were not the strongest, in fact, I had gotten the lowest scores in the area of water training. I absolutely loved the water, so peaceful, mysterious and powerful all at the same time. Some of my greatest and most relaxing moments were shared at the waters edge. I loved and respected the source, and wanted to do all that I could to protect it, and Octavia. I vowed to myself not to be dismayed or deterred by my lack of skills, although a huge part of the quest relied heavily on this skill, I was determined to face my weakness, and make it my strength.

The Great Currents; “Within the depths of ones soul, is a strength unknown”

I moved as quickly as I could across the mountains side, towards the highest fall. The lower I went the more slippery it became. Perhaps this is why they had just jumped in. I thought to myself, thinking of the Emperor and Empress, whom I had believed my whole life, had faced a tragic love story and fatal fate. In actuality, they had just been fulfilling their calling, one they had jumped into in faith. I debated if I should do the same, I would rather jump intentionally than fall accidentally. I was conflicted for a moment, but felt I was still too high up. Suddenly, I heard the beating of drums off in the distance, signalling that all warriors had begun their mission. The drums echoed out from the gates of the castle, beating with the rhythm of celebration and good fortune. I smiled, it felt good to know I was embarking on something so important to the Empire, to the Nation, and to myself. I had something to prove, to myself, my mother, and to anybody else who had doubted me. The fact was, I was nwaayni, in a world dominated by nwoke. I pushed for equality in a field that was only designated for them, it hadn’t been an easy journey or task, but I had made it this far. My father told me I would be a great Gate's Keeper just like him one day, that was before he was taken away. So to honour his memory and dedication, I vowed I would become the greatest Gate Keeper there ever was.

I leaned up against the slippery, wet and jagged wall, to take another glance at my map. I steadied my body as best I could slipping my travel pack off, to grab a hook that I hoped would assist me in moving forward more safely. I looked up, I had come a long way down, I observed a few of my fellow warriors amidst the crevices of the slippery slopes of rocks. I hadn’t spotted Rendif or Moctar Poctaro. I was close to the place where I would need to duck behind the falls and jump into the whirling waters as shown on my new map. My heart began to race, beads off sweat began to swell on my forehead, and I felt sick in the pit of my stomach. I had been told that when you feel like this, it means that something exciting, new, and amazing is likely to take place. I quickly refocused, as I felt my foot begin to slip off the rock I was standing on. I quickly folded up my map, placing it back into the inner pocket of my lightly armoured vest, moving carefully to place my pack, back over my shoulders, with the metal hook in my grasp. It was a balancing game, and I began to wobble. I lost my footing and slipped, falling down through several rocks, as I bumped my back and head against the rugged rocks that had been below me, only moments before. I now lay stunned, gripping the hook into a rock just above me. It was the only thing that had stopped my full decent into the rocky waters below. The second time today, I found my heart in my throat as I viewed my feet dangling out over the edge. I slowly pulled my self up, feeling a deep throb in both my head and back, my travel pack dangled above me on the place I had been previously standing. I would need to retrieve it, before I could continue.

I heaved myself upward, using the hook to assist me, if I didn’t do this just right, my bag may plummet into the currents below, or worse. I used my other hand as leverage and reached for the bag. “Got it!” I grunted aloud, clinging to the bottom of the bag, now the challenge was to pull the one strap that still clung to the ledge of a protruding rock above. I jumped lightly, feeling a bit dizzy as I looked behind me and below me. I stood still there for a moment against the cold slippery stone, and breathed deeply in and out for several breaths, to gain my balance. This was it, I needed to retrieve my pack and get out of here, I was loosing time. The portal of Sufusobu only remained open while the firelight remained high in the skies. As it descended to meet the horizon, the portal became smaller until completely closing, only reopening when the firelight rose again at dawn. I didn’t want to chance having to spend the night on this side of the Great Falls, I also didn’t like the idea of having to wait after all my friendly competition had already moved on.

As the balance in my head and my body steadied with my breathing, I gave one last yank on the travel pack, releasing it, wobbling for just a moment more, before resting my body completely against the mountain. My cheek rested solidly against the cold rocky side of the mountain, as I returned the pack over my shoulders securely. I continued using the hook to assist in my swifter more precise movements towards my destination. I finally slipped behind the roaring water fall, that according to my map would lead me to the portal, that opened up into another world. I stood still, slightly stunned to see Raefello, another warrior who seemed frozen in fear, I moved towards him, he looked up at me with tears in his eyes and large beads of sweat falling from his head. “I can’t do it Aunya, I just can’t do it, I’ve been here waiting for the right moment, for the courage, for motivation, for the perfect opportunity, and I just can’t do it! I watched Jakoa and Rendif dive in like it was nothing, I watched Minowe nervously slip off and yelp in distress as he fell.” Raefello looked down, his body shaking wildly.

“Ok Raefello, just take a few deep breaths first. Before you do anything else, just breath, get yourself back in control. I’m scared too, you saw me during swim training, if anybody should be nervous about diving in here, it should be me.” I laughed nervously. “Why don’t we do it together, you and me Raefello. I’ll come closer to you, we can hold hands, and do it like the King and Queen of Nunubia.”

He looked up and grinned. “You promise not to let go?”

“Absolutely,” I responded. “Once we’re in the waters we’ll have to let go so we can swim, but while we jump, let’s hold hands, we can do this together.” I encouraged, moving in closer. I reached for Raefello’s hand, he didn’t budge.

“Reafello, we have to do this soon, or the portal will close, and we will literally be a day behind everyone else. We’ve trained for this, The Almighty One is with us, and we were chosen for a reason. We have to at least attempt to make it.”

“Easy for you to say Aunya, everything comes so easy for you. I’ve never seen such a brave nwaayni, or anyone for that matter. You go, I’ll stay here.” He demanded.

“Easy! Are you mad Raefello? Nothing comes easy to me, I work hard, and do the best I can, and I convince myself to keep going, to keep trying. The trick is to not give up, and that’s what it seems like you’re trying to do right now, and at such a pivotal moment. If you don’t jump Raefello, you’ve already lost, because it doesn’t matter how slow you go, or which direction you take, as long as you just keep going! Failing is part of our training, remember the Director told us that? We will make mistakes, we will mess up, and we will be afraid, but we must do it anyway! That’s the difference between the survivors and the thrivers, which one are you Raefello?” I asked sternly.

“I choose to survive Aunya.” He half chuckled and half cried, “But I know I’ll regret it everyday of my life, so let’s do it, let’s jump, and either we thrive or we die. Either way I think I’m ready.” He reached for my hand and closed his eyes, it was as though I could feel his pulse racing through the veins in his hand, it added to my already thumping heart beat pounding in every area of my own body. I remembered my mother telling me that it was moments when you felt like this, that you were either growing, knowing, or showing something new. “Okay, on the count of three.” I nodded, he nodded back in agreement. We moved over a specific area of the waters that swirled and twirled in a spiralling decent. The current looked strong and the waters rough, but we both knew it was now or never. “One, two, three!”

There was a loud roaring, and ringing in my ears, I struggled for a moment to stay above the waters, but quickly realized that fighting the current was futile. I no longer felt Raefello’s hand in mine, I closed my eyes, and allowed myself to be pulled under. For one moment I struggled to breathe, but in the very next moment I found myself lifted up against what could only be the underside of the mountain. There was pocket of air, untouched by the falls rapids. I breathed in and out desperately, coughing up water from deep in my throat. I looked over to see Raefello, sputtering and coughing as well. We smiled at one another, but only briefly, because in the next moment he was gone, swept away in the currents, around the next corner. My eyes were wide with anticipation and fear because I knew I was next. I would be pulled away by the current in just another moment, I could feel my body being slowly pulled towards the edge, away from the small but safe refuge. I remembered to take note of the direction I was going, it was defiantly to the right. Had the current wanted to throw me left, it easily could have done so. The elder ranks made it seem as though we could choose our direction, the currents were fast and exceedingly strong, there was no choice here. I was thankful when I felt my body being yanked further to the right, as it appeared on the map, but left in reality, and suddenly I was flung upwards into a fury of water and bubbles. I struggled again, flailing my arms and legs, before I realized that the waters had calmed, and it was only me making all the commotion. I opened my eyes, and witnessed the beauty and wonder of the underwater world I had just entered. There were fish of all colours, shapes and sizes, swimming about the calm waters, amidst plants of equally vibrant colours and textures. I continued to hold my breath and propel myself upwards, I knew I would only be able to hold my breath for a while longer, before I would need air. According to the map, a small ledge of rock which housed a large air bubble, sat a great distance above me. All I could see was water, I began treading more quickly, in hopes of making it to the air bubble before being distressed. There was no Raefello in sight or anybody else for that matter, nothing but the aquatic life that moved about unfazed.

I soon began to feel a bit light headed. Could I continue swimming upwards? I felt tired, my body felt heavy, and it seemed harder to move forward. It was as though there was a pressure, or a force I was swimming against. We had all been well trained to hold our breath under water, something that was common Octavian practice, but was emphasized and mastered in our warrior training. However, in this moment, I knew my body required air, I needed air now! I began to panic, and without warning the currents picked up in speed, I felt a powerful jolt of energy swirl beneath me. My weak body was propelled upwards by the currents force, and within moments, I could see the rocky ledge as shown on my map and described by the elder ranks. I used the last of my strength to swim towards the ledge. I heaved my arms up towards it’s flat surface, and held on, allowing my body to float there for a few seconds, before mustering the energy required, to heave my body up and over the rest of the rocky ledge. Finally, resting on top of its surface I found myself inside the massive air bubble able to breathe freely.

Within moments, I felt restored, the air inside the bubble was strong and pure. My entire body felt renewed and refreshed. I looked around in amazement, finally comfortable enough to truly take in my surroundings. I observed more fish swimming by in different directions and different speeds, some swam in groups, and others swam alone. The water was mostly clear with a slightly green hue, and far across the waters I could see what looked to be solid rock, it continued as far up as I could see. The refuge of the bubble was clear, and allowed me to look straight up over my head without any obstruction, although all I could see was more water. To my right, and only an arms reach away, was a solid wall made of the same rock which protruded outward forming the ledge I stood on. The wall seemed completely ordinary, other than the fact it was releasing bubbles from a small hole. Small air bubbles popped out one at a time, collecting in the upper corner of the large air bubble and the wall. After several moments, I noticed the top bubbles melded into the larger one. I presumed that’s how the large bubble maintained its form and function. The smaller air bubbles popped or melded after several minutes, adding a continuous supply of air and space. I watched the pattern, looking around again at the desolate space I found myself in. I knew I couldn’t stay here for much longer, although I was safe from water entering my lungs, it was cold, there was no heat, and no provision, it was time to move on. I opened my map, its sides clung to one another as I attempted to unfold it, nothing was exempt from the soggy waters. But miraculously the image was still very clear, and I noticed something new had appeared. The place where I now stood, entitled The Great Bubble, It was symbolized by one large circle over a ledge protruded out of the wall, with a few tiny circles representing the rising air bubbles.

Next to it read; Rise to the top with no despair, the ride is tough, you’ll need the gift of air. Great is the distance you must go, with precision and care a bubble you may pluck, place over your senses, for the waters are displeased and the currents are rough. Test your potential, is your soul enough? Great strength you’ll require to reach where you desire.

Aunya pondered what she had just read, it was a bit of a riddle. “My senses?” She wondered quietly, she looked towards the bubbles that formed from within the rocky wall, and floated towards to the top of the large bubble she currently occupied. “With precision and care.” She whispered aloud. How would she reach the bubbles that rose to the top? She knew she had to somehow take one of those bubbles, and… over her senses? She thought. She had come to the conclusion since the majority of her senses, sight, taste, smell and sound, were on her head, the bubble must be placed over her head. With her hook still in hand, Aunya used it to heave herself up the rocky wall side, there were a few small ledges that protruded just enough to fit her footing, and add leverage. She failed miserably over and over, falling off the side of the wall back to where she started. In her frustration she heaved her hook towards the wall, which bounced off the wall and spiralled and spun, escaping the huge bubble, then falling down, way down in the direction in which she had come; this only enraged her more. Aunya noticed the waters begin to darken, they didn’t appear to be changing colour, it was more of a shadow, an adjustment in lighting. It was getting late, and perhaps whatever light from the surface was able to reach that far below the waters, was now diminishing.

Aunya decided to stop completely, taking a moment to breathe deeply. As she did this, she noticed something she hadn’t noticed before, a similar hole in the wall to the one the bubbles were being released from, but much lower to where she stood. She looked around the surface of the ledge, and chose a good sized rock from the many amongst her feet. Aunya pulled the other hook from her travel pack, with determination she used it to heave herself against the wall, and the small rock she had picked up, smashing it against the hole where the bubbles escaped. She jumped down and waited, a few moments passed, and sure enough a small bubble began to form from the hole much lower and closer to her height. Now the challenge was to gently cup a bubble and place it over her head. The bubbles were small at first, but soon reached the size of the others that had been floating upwards on her arrival. Aunya readied herself for the next bubble to be released, this would be the one. After the bubble was placed over her head, she would potentially have enough air to make the rest of the journey, to the surface of Wakakowe.

The bubble sat wobbling unsteady between the palms of my hands. How would I get this over my head without popping it? And if the riddle was correct, it sounded like I still had a rough journey ahead. Would the bubble hold up against the dangerous currents? I closed my eyes, it seemed to be the only way to calm my nerves. In one swift move I pulled what appeared to be a delicate bubble over my head. Slowly, I lowered my hands, relaxing them at my sides, and opened my eyes. Although I could see clearly, it was evident the bubble had remained in tact over my head. It exaggerated my vision slightly, but I was ready to get out of this place, and onto the next part of the journey. I took another deep breath within my bubble, breathing was effortless. I stepped one foot outside the huge bubble that had been my refuge, then I jumped out completely and propelled my body upwards towards Wakakowe.

It was only a few minutes before I felt my body being pushed downwards, I used all my strength to tread against the currents. I had made a lot of progress, swimming a great distance, but now it was clear to see the chaotic currents above me, tossing the waters this way at that. I hesitated, but remembered this was the only way through. I took a deep breath just incase my bubble might pop, and to muster a little extra courage. When I entered the rushing waters, I immediately got an idea of just how powerful the currents were. I was jolted to the right, although I wanted to remain left, I used all my might against the great waters, and was slammed against a sharp rock that seemed to appear out of nowhere. My arm and back ached and stung all at the same time, I shook off the pain and used the same rock to push off of with my feet, with a jolt of my own I forced myself through. I pressed forward, but was quickly pulled into a monstrous current that yanked my body back and forth, like leaves tossed in the wind of a vicious storm. Then I was yanked up into a complete spin, spiralling around and around in a circle, I felt like I was about to vomit, when suddenly I realized I was inside the spiralling waters, deep in its centre. It was suddenly, calm, quiet and still. All around me the waters twisted and turned like a funnel of reckless vengeance. I knew this would take everything I had, every last bit of strength I could muster, but I was determined, I didn’t come this far to be turned back. With my bubble still intact, and the peaceful moment I had been granted within the eye of the monstrous current, I noticed I could remain inside the centre and swim unscathed through the middle of whirling currents. I swam upwards for a long distance. When I reached its end, I was disheartened to see another powerful current, tearing into the opposite direction. I had no other option, I would have to power swim through the opposing forces, of the two currents that clashed. My hope was that the whirling current above me would be the last, and would bring me to the end of the portal and to the Nation of Wakakowe, and the land of Nunubia.

The greatest challenge would be crossing over the two currents, without being tossed out and about. I could feel a dull ache throbbing in my arm, I knew that my wound needed to be tended to. Without thinking another thought or questioning my ability or strength, I heaved myself forward and straight into the current. The waters slapped my face and body brutally, I kept on swimming and knew the bubble over my senses had been popped. I gasped for air and felt my body release from the resistance. With little strength left, I began to float, I felt my body drift upwards into a slower and softer whirl. The waters above looked as black as night, and were suddenly still and calm. I realized my whole body was floating horizontally, I was on top of the waters. I glided against a black abyss with tiny dots of light that seemed spattered against its plane. The sky? I sprung up amidst the water, it was dark, but sure enough there was the outline of land. I swam towards it, barely able to lift my body above to its rocky, sandy surface. With one last heave, and every fibre of strength in my body and soul, I laid upon the land. I had finally arrived in Wakakowe.

The Great Deception; “May the darkness shine upon you”

I breathed in and out deeply, just grateful to be on dry land once more. I rolled over to see what I had believed to be the night sky, and in fact, it was. I identified the sprinkled patterns of light, as the small night light crystals that decorated the night skies whenever it was clear enough to observe them. It was night here in Wakakowe, it was much darker than in Octavia, where we made common use of lights crystals for energy, warmth and light. Every home within a compound had at least three to five medium sized light crystals. Larger lamps had been created to sit in common areas such as markets, and the gates, where it was desired or necessary to see after the firelight had set for the day.

I laid there on my back, thinking of the enclosed light crystal mother had wrapped and packed for me herself. The ache in my back, and the throb in my arm, made me wish I was back at the manor with mother at my side. I know she would have made the healing salve, that she did whenever I had even the slightest cut. She would clean the wound, apply the salve and then place a warm rag over it, she’d apply a little pressure, and say, My sweet Aunya, my angel from every angle, you’re going to be just fine. I pictured the softness of her eyes and felt the warmth of her touch. As I had grown older her constant fussing had become more of an annoyance than a comfort, but now I longed to have her at my side, especially in this moment, as my broken body lay amidst an unknown darkness.

My eyes adjusted even more to the night, and I notice a few patches of soft cool grass I laid upon, as my body began to shiver, I heard leaves that rustled and shook in the breeze. I saw a few large plants that sprouted up next to me, and as my teeth began to chatter I knew I couldn’t stay here for long. I had to get into my pack that had remained on my back the entire time. I needed the light source, and to check my map. I also remembered the large piece of bondu leaf which Mooma, the head of the kitchen staff had promised to place in my pack. She’d picked it fresh from our gardens that morning. The bondu leaf would temporarily ease some of my pain, including the hunger in the pit of my stomach.

As I lay their willing myself to get up. I heard a soft growl, and felt the presence of something move across the soft grass, and through the tall plants. Before I could lift myself into a sitting position and reach for my bow and arrows, I felt the warm breath of a beast just above my head, I looked into what appeared to be two night light crystals that had fallen from the sky and stopped directly over my head. They were large and close, they glowed with a heat and a yellow intensity. I froze. The warm breath of the beast warmed my face, as it hovered above me, so close, that as it growled I could feel the vibration leave its throat. I remained completely still. It began to sniff and snarl around me, I felt it’s warm wet nose, which almost tickled as it nudged around my body. It was as though it wanted me to rise. At my feet it finally rested, it let out a low growl and then a loud howl. I could see the white of it’s fangs as I lifted my head slowly to see where it was. It appeared to be a growl cat, but I had never seen one with eyes that mimicked the fire light crystal. It let out another gentle growl, and pushed its muzzle back up against my body until it had returned to my head, where it sat silently. I wasn’t sure what to do. Do I get up and risk startling it, perhaps encouraging an attack? Or do I just lay here and play dead, suffering in pain?

I heard a rustle against the trees and plants again. Were there more of them? Was I in danger? Or had somebody come to help? I tried to move into a position to see my surroundings better, the growl cat which only appeared as two yellow eyes floating against the darkness of the night, remained at my side. I heard the clicking of a tongue and then a voice call, “Come. Come!” Followed by more clicking. The growl cat began to pace back and forth beside me, as though not wanting to go, yet torn to follow the orders of the clicking tongue. I assumed whoever I had just heard, was familiar with the wild growl cat, who had yet to dismember me.

“Over here!” I heard a voice shout, barely able to see the outline of the nwoke that lifted my body from the cold wet ground, just before everything went completely black. Every now and again I heard some voices and rustling of leaves and bushes. My eyes were heavy, but I felt warm and dry, I flickered my tired eyes open, and looked straight up at a wooden roof. Although my vision was still blurry, I recognized the woven pattern of long branches. I rose slowly to observed the inside of the dwelling that reminded me of many of the inner village huts back home. There was a huge fire in the centre of the large room, and the roof in the centre was opened allowing the smoke and flames to reach safely upwards and out. I had lost all sense of time. Against my body I could feel the soft warm bedding of leaves and cloth. I heard voices and saw bodies, but nothing was completely clear, until next to me I heard the familiar voice of Rendif.

“You finally made it my friend, we are very few, and all of us that made it through are in rough shape. You were lucky, he pointed across the room. “Raefello hasn’t woken since he arrived. The wound on your arm is very deep, they administered a tincture and wrapped it for you, how do you feel?”

“Who’s they?” I breathed, finally finding the strength to sit up all the way.

“There are two tribes, one is Nule, and the other is Nyeus. These are the Nule, who live around the waters edge. Out of curiousity, I asked about the intricate markings of paint on their faces. I’m told its beautification and status markings. The Nyeus live in-land, and we’ll meet our Nyeus guides in the early dawn I’m told.” Rendif reached for my hand. “How do you feel?” He repeated.

“I’m okay.” As my vision became clearer, I could see that Rendif had a patch covering his left eye. “What happened to you?” I asked.

“The currents.” He answered and grinned. I grinned back, I could still feel the dull sensation of pain inside my arm, but couldn’t see the wound under the bandages. It seemed the only light that filled the space, was given off by the large fire in the centre of the room. A Nule nwyaani approached us, I knew she was Nule because of the intricate designs painted onto her face, as Rendif had just explained. The paintings detailed the natural beauty of her features, she offered me a bowl of something warm, it smelled delicious, and I took it with no hesitation.

“Thank you.” I nodded. She nodded back and smiled. “Everything in it, has healing powers, you will feel much better soon.” She turned and walked away with the same sweet expression on her face as she had come.

That’s when I noticed the growl cat, it moved with grace, as it sauntered about the dwelling as though it was normal to have such a large wild animal inside. It moved towards me and Rendif, its fur was sleek and shiny, and as black as the night outside. The growl cat starred at me for several moments before plunking down at the side of my bed. Rendif and I looked at each other, “I think she likes you.” He said quietly, backing up slowly, “I’m going to go back and lay down now, I’m glad you made it Aunya. Tomorrow is a new day, and we still have much to accomplish. Get some rest.” He patted my uninjured shoulder and backed away completely. I watched him settle back onto his own bed, far across the large room. I could feel the vibration and hear the low purring of the growl cat at my side. I grinned, feeling oddly reassured by her presence.

I heard the tweets and calls of the early birds, and smelled the reminants of smoke from the dissipating fire, that had burned out through the night. It had kept everyone warm, fed, and able to see amidst the dark. I went to stand to my feet, and felt something soft, smooth and warm beneath me, then I heard the low soft growl of the black growl cat. “Oh, sorry! I forgot you were there.” I pulled my feet back up quickly.

“Don’t worry about her, she’s mostly friendly, and she’s obviously taken a liking to you. I’m Nos, I am from the Nyeus tribe, I’m here to guide you and your fellow warriors to meet my parents.” He smiled kindly before he spoke loudly to the whole room.

“Great rising to you all! I am Prince Nos, from the tribe of Nyeus, I am the son of the King and Queen of Wakakowe and the land of Nunubia. You’ll need to get ready to leave, the day light does not last as long here as it does where you’re from, and because you are not familiar with the land, it’ll be much easier for us to travel when the firelight crystal is high against the skies. The forests or the bush we call jolubu in this season, and lashana in the next, is not always friendly, in fact it can be deadly. We may encounter a few challenges along the way. I know many of you have already suffered on your journey through the portal, but my mission is to get you to my parents as quickly as possible. They need to instruct you further on your mission, and you can be on your way back through Sufusobu; who also has issues with being friendly.” He chuckled, more to himself than anybody. “After you have taken provision, we will meditate together as one, and then we will begin our trek to Nunubia, where my mother Queen Leminna, and my father King Rabnoc await your arrival.” With his finishing statement, he turned to speak to what appeared to be several royal guards, I only presumed because of their identical uniforms and the official way they stood with their spears at their side.

I jumped up from the place I had rested all night. The large black growl cat jumped up and towards me at the same time, startling me, and causing me to fall back onto the soft bed top.

“She really does like you. Her name is Shikiah, and she is my travel mate. She accompanies me wherever I go, usually. She is the one that discovered you at the waters edge last night. She is an exceptional protector and companion. She is graceful, yet fierce, gentle, yet deadly, just as the Nation of Wakakowe.” The grin remained on his face. He extended his hand, half in greeting, and half to help me to my feet. I felt a rush of energy pulse through my hand and arm, which I retracted quickly, and stared at the prince in curiosity. He continued to grin, which was beginning to get on my nerves. “It appears that Shikiah will be your guide on this journey too.”

I moved to grab a hot bowl of provision, Shikiah strolled close by, never allowing me to leave her eyesight. I wondered why, like I wondered about the vibrational surge the Prince had shared with the grip of his hand.

“Are you ok?” Rendif asked, as he seated himself beside me on a large log next to the fire pit. It had been relit and was already massive in size. “I think so.” I responded, nodding towards the growl cat.

“Yea, it’s kinda odd, she seems obsessed with you. Perhaps because she found you almost lifeless at the waters edge, maybe she feels some responsibility?” He shrugged.

“I’m not sure Rendif, but this place is a little creepier than I had imagined. I thought it would be grand and beautiful, mysterious, yes, but not creepy.” I finished taking another large scoop from my breakfast bowl, it was delicious, and I had to admit between the tincture, and the two bowls of provision I had had the pleasure of devouring, I was feeling much better. Particularly, after the hand greeting with the Prince, who’s touch had sent a surge of energy pulsing down my arm. I felt regenerated and ready for whatever was coming next, in this creepy new land. After a few private moments to freshen up in a small dwelling behind the main hut, we were off to Nunubia.

The air was hot, and humid. Tola one of the royal guards had explained the two seasons in more detail. Jolubu was the hot and dryer season, but still retained some humidity. Lashana was the cooler and wet season, nights were always chillier, especially closer to the waters edge. Our group was much smaller than when we had started out on the other side of Sofusubu, even with our new guides included. I took a head count, at my side was Rendif, Jakoa, Minowe, and Moctar Poctaro, adding myself, our warrior group had literally been cut down to less than half then when we started, I considered myself blessed. Only Raefello remained at the water side hut, in very poor condition. Nobody else had been seen or found, which meant that they had either returned to Octavia on a failed mission, or had perished. Either way, it wasn’t a destiny anybody had truly prepared for.

Both Rendif and Shikiah remained close at my side. Prince Nos had given us a thorough briefing of what to expect in the bush, including what to be cautious of.

“There are many dangerous plants and animals.” He warned. “You will probably see some of the most beautiful creatures and luscious greenery. We have trees and flowers of all types, but be warned, not everything is as it seems. What may appear as a threat may not be a threat at all, and what might seem harmless, may be the biggest threat of all.” Prince Nos nodded towards me and Shikaih.

“She’s friendly with you, but don’t be deceived, because not all the animals in the bush will be.” He moved swiftly, pushing aside foliage, with the bottom of a large spear, that doubled as his walking stick. It was engraved with beautiful swirled etchings. Over his shoulders was a thick black cape, which gleamed with a gold lining and an emblem on the back. The emblem looked very familiar, but Aunya couldn’t quite place it. He and his guards wore gold chest plates and intricate woven material around their forearms. The material used was the same pattern as the wide belt around their waists. There bottoms were loose and short, reaching just below their knees. Their attire seemed fitting for the environment as the heat never seemed to end. The night had been cool, but the day was hot. Aunya had removed her own light armour and wore only the lightly woven blouse, that aloud the very small breeze to reach her bronze skin. Her braids were held up in a high bun off of her neck and back, she had pulled her own pant legs up to her knees, and was glad for the heavy black boots that thudded against the thicket of branches and leaves.

Soon we arrived in a place where the trees became more sparse, and the bush seemed to open up, I could even see the skies more clearly. Overhead the firelight radiated more brightly than I had ever seen, and the expanse around it appeared in hues of deep purples and oranges, another sight I had never witnessed before. The skies back home were a radiant blue, unless it rained and then they were grey. The ground where we stepped felt soft and almost soggy. One of the guards hollered over to the Prince in a language that none of us Octavian’s understood. Nos quickly translated, “Be careful here!” He hollered out to everyone. “Watch your steps, if the ground appears grey and bubbly don’t step there, it’s a hot pit. It’ll pull your limb in, then pull the rest of you down with it. In a matter of minutes, your entire body will be disintegrated.” He turned back around and continued walking cautiously over the soft ground. When we had finally moved out of the soggy, bubbling grounds of the hot pits, we all breathed a sigh of relief. It had been a tricky game of cautious steps to lead us out onto more solid and safer grounds. What we entered into next, was nothing short of breathtaking, we stood in awe amongst a beautiful oasis of tall towering flowers and large blossoms.

The air was fragrant with the scents of their oversized petals, they smelled sweet like the fruits of the honeydew trees back home. Small winged creatures swooped and fluttered from flower to flower, landing delicately, with tiny legs that looked as though they could barely bare the weight of their massive, yet elegantly designed wings. “They’re lovely.” I said quietly, to Rendif and Moctar Poctaro, who walked on either side of me. I felt as though speaking too loudly would frighten them. “Yhea, they’re pretty.” Moctar agreed, reaching out to touch one, but almost instantly the previously unbothered insect like creature, with wings that shimmered in a vibrant blue and yellow, blew up to four times its original size, and chomped down on Moctar’s hand with a jaw full of large serrated fangs. His shriek echoed through the trees, completely mortified and taken by surprise, we all began to scream and holler. Moctar Poctaro’s hand had a huge gouge taken out of it, flesh and bone, and everything in between hung grotesquely from his limb. We looked on in horror as the Nyeus guards and Prince Nos, shooed and swatted at the incredibly dangerous, “Fairy dragons!” He called out. He and his guards began beating them back with their spears. “Run!” The Prince ordered, as the beautiful creatures one by one began to increase in size, displaying their gnarly razor sharp mouth full of what could only be described as a death trap. We ran as ordered, we ran, and kept running, until I suddenly found myself alone with only Shikaih panting at my side. “Fairy dragons, huh? There’s nothing fairy like about those dragons.” I gasped trying to regain my breath. I reached for my bow and arrow, as I looked around for whatever might be coming next. My heart raced and my body shook, my eyes were wide with anticipation. Shikaih growled loudly, letting out a great roar, I believed it was her way of letting the others know where we were. Immediately I heard the Prince. “Aunya, stay put, we’re coming to you.”

While I awaited their rescue, I was alerted to the low hanging vines that Shikaih continued to growl and bear her own fangs towards. I noticed the vines lowering slowly, and I began to hear hissing, that soon filled my ears and my head in such a piercing tone and volume, forcing me to cover my ears. A bow and arrow was not going to help me in this scenario. I put them away quickly, readying myself in a solid Nukuwe combat stance, I now recognized that the vines were large, thick snakes. Apparently, a common enemy shared between worlds, as they were equally loud, and potentially as dangerous in Octavia. But I also knew their noise and display of fangs and tongue, were far more menacing than their actual bite. They travelled in groups for a reason, which was simply a display of their weakness, because they possessed no true power in their bite. Even so, I didn’t want to suffer from a venomous puncture, which caused temporary paralysis, that part wasn’t so bad, it was after that, that they became truly dangerous, as they wrapped their muscular bodies around their victim, until they suffocated.

“Ro Kozo kamats!” I cried zealously. It was a Nukuwe combat cry, released before the beginning of battle to warn both friend and foe. My instincts kicked in, and I remembered why I was here. I was a warrior at heart, and at soul, regardless of what the outcome, I wouldn’t go down without a fight, it was in my blood.

No matter what officials would say, or what awards awaited, no matter what titles or ranks I would receive, I had a mission, and that’s all that mattered now. My training kicked in next, and I felt fearless. “Ro Kozo kamats!” I called again before jumping up to grab one of the monstrous snakes as it lowered towards me. I could see the slits of green glowing eyes, as white fangs hung from the corners of its venomous mouth, and its red tongue appeared as a single fiery flame. The firelight was quickly making its way down, I remembered Prince Nos mentioning the shorter periods of day light. Shadows began to cast all round me, I didn’t even have time to reach for my dagger, as they started to come quickly, attacking one after the other. I continued pulling their thick bodies down from the trees as they hissed and spat, I crushed them beneath the souls of my feet. The trick was come down hard on top of their spade shaped heads before they had a chance to bite. Shikiah followed suit ripping them down with her massive paws, decorated with impressively sharp claws. She then proceeded to gnaw at their necks, which only took moments before their bodies went lifeless. I was moving so fast, I felt like a whirl wind, turning and pivoting on my feet to cover all grounds as I had been taught in training. I noticed the loud hissing begin to dissipate as the shadows of the night began to take over. I could see Shikiah’s eyes begin to resonate with that warm yellow glow I recalled from the night before. I took it as a clear sign that night had arrived in Wakakawe, the skies began to deepen, and shadows cast down over everything. It was suddenly very dark, I couldn’t even see the shadows or the depths of my surroundings. All I could see was black, I had no perception, and in the same moment I began to panic, not knowing what was going on around me. Something wasn’t right, a sensation of heat swelled deep inside my chest, and burst out through the sockets of my eyes. A bright beam of light spread across my view, it was as though I had fire light crystals within my eyeballs. I fell in distress and shock, alarmed by the transformation and heat in my eyes. I could hear that the others were closer now, battling the remainder of the slithery serpents, but I couldn’t get a grasp on my sight, I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t fight. I struggled for a moment before I heard and felt a pressure in the grass in front of me. “Don’t fight it Aunya.” Prince Nos’ smooth assuring voice responded calmly. When I looked up he was kneeling with me, he lifted himself up to one knee and then the next, before extending his hand to help me to my own feet. Everything was so vivid, every object seemed to be alive, glowing with an energy, an aura of colours, beyond the ordinary details of light, that I was accustomed to.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before.” The Prince replied.

“You?” I questioned. “I can assure you, I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

“You truly are gifted. My mother alluded to a gifted one that was present among the Octavian tribe. I think we’ve discovered who that is.” He grinned.

“Is that grin a permanent trait?” I asked.

“You wouldn’t be the first to tell me I smile a lot, my nick name is actually Grinso. Don’t call me that around my parents, it’s highly unofficial, and completely frowned upon, but feel free when it’s just you and me.” He released my hands, as he’d been helping me balance. I was still unsteady as I adjusted to my new vision. “Come on everyone, I promise we are almost there.” He waved his hand in the direction he wanted us to follow.

We walked up a steep and grassy slope that lead up one of the many hills, that seemed to suddenly appear. As we reached the top of the slope the land levelled out, and we stood before a calm waters edge. The waters were crystal clear, I could see brightly illuminated fish swimming below, even amidst the dark. The waters surrounded several hill tops of luscious green vegetation. Large huts lined the trail leading up to what could only be described as the most glorious dwelling I’d ever seen. I wasn’t sure if it was because of the light that shone from within my eyes, but the massive palace glistened against the night sky, it was cast of pure gold. It was like a beacon at the top of the hilly oasis, and all of it was semi surrounded by enormous heights of water that fell from an unseen source, that appeared to fall from above the clouds and mist, that hovered in the skies. The falls fell at different heights and sizes, separated by the mountains varying surfaces. The waters poured down over the rocky sides of the mountains, and past patches of rich foliage that sat snuggly within the dips and ridges of the mountains rugged surfaces. The semi circle formation encompassed the hill tops within its heart protecting them and the land around it, from anything that didn’t belong. We had finally arrived and were about to enter Nunibia. Prince Nos had taken his place back at the head of the pack, Moctar Poctatro was being held up and supported by Tola, the royal guard. He was in great pain and shock, they had wrapped his hand in a bush tree and linen from his own shirt. Blood continued to drip from his wound, I was glad that we had arrived, because any further, and he may not have been able to go on.

“You look so freaky.” Rendif whispered, referring to my eyes. Minowe nodded in agreement.

“What happened back there?” Minowe asked.

“Don’t know.” I replied honestly.

“You knocked those reptiles out of the trees like a one, two, three!” Rendif recalled excitedly boxing at the air. You are definitely one of a kind Aunya. I”m glad I’m on your good side.” He chuckled quietly.

We approached a long bridge, that arched across the crystal clear waters. It was lined in intricate weavings of moving vines, that wrapped themselves over the rails. White blossoms sprouted and bloomed from the vines and filled the air with a light sweet scent that eased my nerves. We stepped onto the bridge that would lead us to the next part of our journey. The bottom of the bridge was lain with bricks of stone lined with the same gold that Aunya now noticed on the leaves of the vines that cradled the blossoms, and the same gold that was present on the Prince’s cape, and the structure of the royal palace, that we continued to move towards. When we reached the royal gates several guards pulled the heavy barriers back so we could enter. Within the palace estate, everyone’s eyes glowed with a warmth, and an inner light that even those without the gift, were able to see in more detail than their own eyes could perceive in the darkness, that lined the night. The night was warm, a pleasant side effect of being inland, the small firelight crystals in the skies above appeared larger, and the nightlight also had a zoomed in effect, appearing much larger, and even closer, than usual. Aunya continued to observed her new surroundings, she was nervous to meet the King and Queen, especially now that she knew her arrival had been anticipated. Not particularly her, but a gifted one, and according to the Prince, the rare occurrence of her eyes transforming as an Octavian, was a sign of being that gifted one.

We were escorted to a large room and left alone, for what seemed a long time. “What kind of hospitality is this?” I demanded, becoming impatient. Moctar had fallen unconscious on arrival, and we did our best to keep him supported on a soft seating area, until finally the large glass doors opened and an nwyaani dressed in beautiful royal garments moved straight towards Moctar Poctaro. Three nwoke in the same patterned garments lifted him onto a cot. “Where are you taking him?” I stood, and questioned.

“We are taking him to be healed. Please don’t worry, he is in good hands.” A deep smooth voice echoed from the back of the room. “Please be seated.” The nwoke that appeared only as a shadow from the back of the room, moved forward gesturing towards a huge sliding door, that opened and revealed large soft chairs around a beautifully decorated table, filled with provisions to eat, and water to drink. I had forgotten how hungry I was, until this moment when my mouth began to salivate with anticipation.

“Good night great warriors of Octavia, may the darkness shine upon you.” King Rabnoc stepped completely into the light, revealing his crown of gold, and large physical stature. He was build wide and tall, and behind him a thick black cape lined with gold and fur hugged snug around his neck and shoulders. He walked towards us, and we immediately bowed down, and kept our heads lowered as was custom when encountering royalty in such a manner, unless instructed otherwise. “Rise friends, you’ve travelled a long way, please eat and take rest.” He motioned towards the table decorated with provision again. “You will join us after you are sufficiently recharged and rested. We look forward to meeting each of you, and sharing with you the gifts and the secrets of the lythmeric stone, where the light meets the dark the power of balance exists.” He gave a slight nod, and disappeared back into the shadows he had come.

We ate the feast that had been prepared for us, humbly, gratefully, and gluttonously. Barely a word was spoken, we had been starving. We had barely eaten a thing for almost two days, and considering our bodies had been through so much, provisions were just the fuel and healing ingredient we needed, to feel strong and rejuvenated. After the luxurious desert of sweet fruits and sour berries I was absolutely stuffed, I had defiantly eaten too much. “I”m stuffed.” I groaned.

“Me too.” Rendif confirmed.

“Me three.” Minowe added.

Jakoa belched in alliance, and we laughed simultaneously

“Sorry, but that was the best meal I think I’ve ever devoured.” He rubbed his belly contently. "This place is incredible. Completely merciless, but incredible all at the same time. If we don’t make it out alive, I can truly say I’m at peace with this meal as my last pleasurable experience.” He nodded and closed his eyes as though he was about to fall asleep.

“Please don’t talk that way.” I said, “I agree this was an amazing meal, but nobody else will be leaving our group, not unless it’s with our purpose for coming in the first place.”

We sat discussing our experiences, and the things we’d seen and done thus far. Some laughter arose, and some sighs of relief and exhaustion escaped from each one of us at some point.

A royal official entered the room requesting us to follow. It was time to be formerly introduced to the King and Queen of Nunubia. They escorted us through a few large corridors, and finally we entered two amazingly large doors decorated in gems and jewels, displaying another image of the now familiar emblem that replicated a flower, which I now recognized as the Flower of life. It was the symbol of the essence of origin, and I concluded as I saw its pattern repeated, over and over amidst the palace and its occupants, that it was of great importance to Nunubia. I felt somehow my enhanced vision was connected to the emblem. As we entered the room, I noticed the guards that lined the walls in the same uniform Tola, and the others who had assisted us on our arrival had worn. They stood motionless, with their spears at their sides, and chins slightly turned up. At the end of the corridor was three massive thrones, and on either side of those were a smaller version, totalling five thrones. In front of each magnificent throne stood its possessor. Right away I recognized the Prince, but he looked slightly different in his more formal wear, and crown placed upon his head. I noticed something else, that I hadn’t noticed before.

My attention was quickly averted, and unable to observe him further, as I realized we were now fully stopped in front of the royal family. I bowed to one knee as my counterparts did, and we remained there, until we heard the firm, yet gentle voice of the Queen.

“Welcome to Nunubia, we honour your arrival and the challenges you’ve encountered to get here. Please stand royal warriors.” We stood and gazed upon her greatness, and yes, I had been correct, as I observed what I thought were wings, on the entire royal family. They had been concealed by the heavy capes worn by both the King and Prince during their limited interactions with us.

“I am Queen Leminna, this is King Rabnoc, our son Prince Nos, and our twins, Prince Sonny and Princess Soila.” Each royal nodded as they were introduced. The Queen stepped forward towards me, she stared intently into my eyes.

“You are gifted Aunya, and you are yet to understand the greatness of your gifts. It’s no coincident that you are here, or the others, as nothing is truly coincidental, but very well coordinated. Your eyes see greatly, beyond those of your Nation. You are destined for more than anybody knows, and it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” Her eyes were dark and deep, and equally as soft as they were fierce. Her high cheek bones lifted slightly as she smiled, her plump lips curved, and then slightly parted, sharing a glimpse of her very white teeth. Her skin replicated the gold of her crown that sat perched upon her neatly twisted curls, and she seemed to have an aura of light about her, that resonated as a soft warm glow. Her wings were like delicate fans that sparkled. They were shimmery and translucent, exuding the same warm glow, which emphasized the sparkle. They looked light in weight, and added an elegance to her graceful presence.

“Balance is what you each must seek most, be fearless. It is your inner strength, and resilience that will see you through the remainder of your mission.” She stepped back, allowing King Rabnoc to step forward.

“We meet again.” His voice was powerful, like his dominant physical presence, yet smooth, like his dark skin. His eyes were the most radiant and dominant in the room. His wings were that of a dragon, thick, heavy and dark. Large veins created intricate patterns, that curved and branched off like the rivers of the great waters. At six upper joints, three on each side, an extended protrusion of cartilage or bone, burst up and out like sharp spears, there was a red tint that added a depth of warmth to the dark masses of fleshy wings that decorated his back conspicuously.

“Welcome to Nunubia, and probably the greatest challenge you are yet to face as a Gate Keeper. In Octavia you are not considered a Gate Keeper until you return with the stone, but here we already see you and respect you as Gate Keepers. You are simply missing your greatest weapon. If you have made it this far, our belief is that your lythmeric stone is waiting to choose you. Many believe it’s the other way around, and that you will choose the stone, but every stone decides who it will honour and protect. Its source is of the greatest currents of all existence, its energy surges from the electro magnetic matter, that is the building blocks to life itself.

It is a direct connection of Source and Creator, combined into one magnificent and beautiful protective source. Its power takes from the dark and gives to the light. It is fashioned beneath the highest peek of Mount Noiz, a scared place where heat and pressure are only bearable at the blackest hour of the night. Although its matter is nothing like that of our flesh, it resembles the Nule and the Nyeus in many ways, and we it. Our eyes are the deepest darkest blue-green, deep browns or black tones, in the light of the day, and in contrast, they become bright with light, glowing in the darkness of the night, except for our extraordinary Queen, who’s light emanates all around her. Her light is a beacon that regulates and controls the rhythms of some of natures greatest gifts, such as the light of day and the dark of night. She is literally the Queen of sleep, and much more.” He winked, and grinned slightly before continuing. “For the majority of us, it is our inner light that is our truth, and our true nature. We seek the dark and reside there mostly, because our light is so intense, we are most powerful in this state, as is the lythmeric stone, we are the Nyeus. The mission is to create balance, we are light in the dark, and dark in the light. In all of natures orders and laws, balance is our purpose and a continuous cycle that is timeless and infinite. The lythmeric stone is merely a reflection of that law, it is the representation of balance and harmony harnessing the ultimate powers of the great waters, currents and forces.” King Rabnoc cleared his throat loudly, and remained quiet for a few moments allowing his listeners to absorb the info he had just shared, because he knew what was coming next would shift their world forever. The truth he was about to reveal was intended to empower their oath, the oath they would pledge to the stone and the Gate Keepers quest. He continued his speech.

“There is a great lie that is told to many of your people in regards to a couple who decided to come through Sufusobu, to live in peace, rather than suffer at the hands of their own parents. Some believe we are that couple, Queen Leminna and I, but let me clarify that, we are not. The young Emperor of Twendola, and the young Empress of Octavia who came many, many lives ago, did not die a tragic death at the bottom of the Great Falls, as told to you through your stories and legends. They lived a wonderful life here among the Nule, at the waters edge, flourishing in love and life. She was pregnant, and had risked her life and the child’s to make it here. They had done a very horrible thing in the eyes of the two royal families, who refused to bless their marriage, they had created a shared bloodline from two different Nations, and without being united by marriage. That was the double blow of disrespect, dishonour and disregard of tradition, that many believe has set the stage for todays conflicts.

Twendola was prepared to look beyond the pregnancy initially, and was willing to break ancient custom and allow the two to be married. However, the union was more of a threat to Octavia, and they refused to bless the union, which would have given Twendolian officials and troops free access to Octavia and the Great Falls, which of course are home to the portal of Sufusobu. Twendola was planning an imminent attack on Wakakowe, we know this, because the couple who married immediately, once they settled here, shared Twendola’s plans of attack. They had come to warn us, and decided to stay for many good reasons, the most important was their lives of course, the safety of their child, and the sanctity of their union. If they had returned Niwajuwa, Twendola would have ordered them to be executed, for treason. They had exposed Twendola’s true intent, to both Octavia and us.

The Twendola Emperor and his officials had been scheduled for their first visit through the portal, after several negotiations with Octavia, as very few are given access. When their plan for take over was leaked by their son, Octavia refused their request, and the union of the young couple, retracting their invitation to visit The Great Falls.

Of course this enraged the Twendolian Emperor, who denied such destructive deception or intent. He put out a price on his own sons life. We were all designed for a different purpose, a destiny to fulfil, and when you do not adhere to your calling, you throw off the balance of the universe. The young couple fulfilled their destiny, and lived in purpose, by doing so, they saved our world and theirs.

To this day Twendola persists on trying to get past the Gates of Octavia to access Sufusobu and Wakakowe. The truth is Twendola wants access to the water portal to control all resources, as all resources come through Wakakowe. We harness the power of the great waters, of the light crystals, of the air, and winds, of the seeds of provision, and the essence of spiritual serenity and enlightenment. In Niwajuwa each nation is guardian to a single resource, Octavia is doubly gifted, being guardian of the water source, and all of its states maintaining guardianship to each great resource as well. The Nation of Wakakowe however, is guardian to all, including several powerful resources that only Nunubia is gifted to be keeper of.

One of these sources is the lythmeric stone, and another is the gold you see all around you, which has many uses, including powers of healing, heating, and the ability to construct and build sturdy designs of both small, and great structures. We lack nothing. We are grateful, thankful, and honour our gifts, taking our responsibilities seriously and reverently. Wawakowe and Niwajuwa are a source of their own and rely on the other for a healthy and harmonious existence. I continue to stress that balance is essential to all.

This is why we grant the great lythmeric stones to our greatest warriors. There is much at stake for all, you are not just protecting Octavian boarders, you are protecting the portal of Sufusobu, and everything beyond it, which is everything that sustains our ways of being and living. It is within our darkest moments our truest and brightest light is brought forth, if we are in alignment with self, and the universe, who is an extension of Source. When all seems hopeless and out of control, in that dark place of lost and alone, is where you can take refuge, where you are hidden, with opportunity to regain your strength, your centre and your grace. Remembering your truth, and who you are. Do not fear the unknown, for it is that darkness the will shape you and form you into the greatest version of self. True warriors understand that the darkness is not to be feared, but embraced. Everything is created out of darkness, including our greatest warriors. So, Rendif, Minowe, Jakoa, and Aunya, I’ll say it again, may the darkness shine upon you.” The King paced the platform in which the thrones and his family sat upon.

The Light of the Great Stone; “Precious is the power of your purpose”

King Rabnoc remained quiet again for several moments, allowing what he was saying to sink into the minds of the four brave warriors that stood before him. He cleared his throat again, and continued.

“You will be given a new map, one that will lead you through the inner tunnels of the mountains peak, and to the Great Hall of Stones. Some of you may have to venture further than others, but this is another part of your mission where you must go it alone. There are very few real things to challenge you once you arrive there. Mainly the dark, the shift in air pressure, and the intense heat that spews from the inner core of the mountain, those will be your greatest concerns. However, there are some unreal, illusions if you will, that may appear to you in the form of your deepest fears. The Prince and his royal entourage will escort you to the great mountain of Noiz, they will assist you on your climb, but only to a certain point. You’ll enter the peak on your own, this is where your true test begins, Keepers of the Gates.” He grinned and sat down on his throne, lifting his wings slightly to adjust to the change in his position.

Prince Nos’ wings were unlike either of his parents, they looked feathery, appearing heavy like his fathers, but delicate like his mothers. As he stepped forward he grinned, and Aunya remembered his reference to his nickname, making her grin as well.

“I am honoured to escort you all to the peak of Noiz. You are a brave group of warriors, and I have no doubt that you’ll each be successful in the last leg of your journey. Tomorrow before the dawn breaks we begin.” The Prince turned around to take his place back in front of his throne, allowing us to see the details in the multitude of black feathers, that collectively made-up the large wings that covered his back.

The adorable twins Sonny and Soila stepped forward at the same time, and spoke at the same time. “We honour you, and ask for your protection and success, great warriors. May the Almighty One be with you.” They bowed their precious heads and returned to their place before their thrones, also granting a full view of their feathery, but much smaller set of wings. Queen Leminna who had taken a seat as the rest of the royal family had said their peace, now stood.

“You will dine with us later. I’m sure your bellies are full now, and you could use some rest. You’ll be escorted to your rooms, and we will see you later in the dinning hall for evening provision.

Before we were escorted away, I spoke up on behalf of our small Octavian group. “We thank you, and honour your roles as King and Queen, Keepers of all of resources, providing and guiding what is essential to nature and to life, especially the water source that flows from your world, into ours. We are humbled and excited to be here. I think I can speak for all of us when I say, we look forward to sharing another royal meal with all of you.” I bowed my head in respect, before we turned to leave, guided by two guards. Shikiah jumped down from the platform where the thrones and the royal family were seated, and took her place beside me. The Prince stood and his parents eyed each other, then Shikiah, and then me.

“I thought it was just in the bush that she felt the need to be at your side, but it would seem she’s genuinely connected to you. I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous. As you know we believe that everything happens, and is for a reason, nothing is coincidence. There must be a reason she feels the need to be at your side. I will allow it.” The Prince then turned around, sitting back on his throne, he watched as we left the room.

When I finally entered the beautiful room that I had the privilege of being a guest in, I turned to Shikiah, who still made me a little nervous, and said, “Why do you want to be with me Shikiah? Do you know something I don’t?” I reached my hand out to pet her head and she immediately leaned into my hand and purred loudly. “Well then, I suppose it’s official, we’re friends.” I giggled. The room was humungous like the rest of the palace. It was brilliantly decorated in rich reds, greens, and a gold theme. It felt safe and very comfortable. I rested my head on one of the many fluffy pillows, on the large bed, intending to rest my eyes, but fell into a deep, and well needed sleep.

I often had vivid dreams, something not everyone experienced. As a young girl, I was told not to share that I had such intense dreams with anybody except my parents. Some of my dreams were reoccurring, but the dream I found myself in currently was completely unfamiliar.

I found myself standing on a huge rock that resembled a beautiful deep blue lythmeric stone, it looked different then any of the ones I had seen in the swords of the Gate Keepers, who patrolled the gates of Octavia. Within its core there was a motion of rolling waves and tides of the great waters. I began to get carried away in the tides, drifting aimlessly until I began to get pulled into a typhoon of water, and then I began spinning in a downward spiral, when I landed I was on my feet amidst the bush of Wakakowe, and suddenly I knew which direction I must go. I could feel a heavy sensation in the pit of my stomach, and a low but soothing voice spoke to me, I sensed something behind me, and I turned to find that the low soothing voice was that of Shikiah,

“You have come so far Aunya, one who’s name means graceful, rhythm, inner sight and inexhaustible. Your inner strength exceeds you, because you are yet to meet it. Like many of the layers of your soul, you will only meet them when necessary, revealed by life’s circumstances, opportunities and experiences. May the light of your soul reveal to you, your true purpose Aunya of graceful, rhythm, inner sight and inexhaustible potential.”

Her eyes began to beam with the whitest light I had ever seen, a tapping on my right shoulder began to annoy me, I shrugged it off, but it continued irritating me. I kept swatting and swiping, but it wouldn’t stop.

“Miss? Miss?” A soft voice repeated, “Miss Aunya your presence is required in the dinner hall shortly, I’ve been sent to help you get ready.” The royal attendant continued tapping me on my shoulder to ensure I was awoken completely. She smiled, “I have been ordered to help you into your evening attire, and escort you to the royal dinner hall, where the royal family is waiting for you and your fellow warriors, as their guests.” The young attendant waited for me to complete bathing, and when I reentered the room, she held up the most beautiful gauni. The dress was decorated in elaborate patterns, of gold, orange and blue, it was sleeveless, and accompanied by a sash to be worn over my shoulder. It hugged my waist tightly, and flared slightly over my hips, it touched the ground with a straight slit that opened up in the middle, revealing a lighter material of pure gold beneath it, everything down to my toes was covered. The dress sparkled, and I felt beautiful in it, the attendee told me to wait while she opened a box and revealed dozens of gold and gemmed bangles, that she adorned my wrists in. “The hair assistant will be in momentarily, but I do have to say Miss Aunya, you are already an absolutely beautiful sight.” She smiled and bowed out of the room.

The hair assistants came in swiftly, and in a matter of minutes had my braids up in a high bun, leaving several braids in spiralling curls. “Your stunning!” They exclaimed, “Enjoy your dinner.” They chimed, and without another word the two had bowed out of the room. I felt good as I slipped my feet into the dazzling slippers that had been left for me to complete my attire. There was a knock at the door, perfect timing, I thought, because I was ready for another feast.

In the hallway I met my nwoke counterparts, who had also washed and dressed up. They looked handsome in their ornately decorated suits, which included the same sash that laid over my shoulder. Together we were escorted to the dinner hall. “You’re, you’re really beautiful in that.” Rendif stammered. “You don’t look too bad yourself.” I chuckled. It was different seeing everyone dressed up, as we were often in uniform and armour. It was a pleasant change. The hall was spectacular as were the provisions lain before us. Dinning with the royal family, was like dinning with family. It had been very formal in the beginning, but soon after giving thanks for the provisions, and everyone had begun to eat, the conversations started, along with jokes and laughter. As tea was being served with the fruit provision, several dancers and musicians were set to perform and entertain, for the evening.

We were encouraged to get up and partake in dancing and mingling amongst ourselves, and a few other official guests who had been invited for the celebration. I found a moment where I was able to slip away, I escaped onto one of the large balconies that opened up off the enormous dining hall. I chose the balcony that had the best view overlooking The Great Falls, I thought is was funny that we called our falls back home great, as they barely compared to the ones before me.

Nunubia’s Great Falls were spectacular, and monumental. Even in the dark their beauty was illuminated by pockets of crystal lights, scattered amongst their rocky grooves. I could hear a rhythm, that played a melody of the wondrous rushing of waters meeting waters, against a symphony of nature’s nightly harmonies. The air was cool again, but not as cool as the night I had washed ashore. The small crystal lights above bounced, and twinkled vividly against the black sky. The sweet smell of trees and blossoms fragranced the air, and a soft breeze, swept gently against my face, I closed my eyes and breathed deeply.

“Hey, there?” I opened my eyes, startled by the voice behind me. I turned to see the Prince. “Prince Grinso, to what do I owe the honour of your presence?”

He laughed. “Your funny, and the honour is all mine. It’s beautiful out here, in the night, and in the day. I wanted to compliment you earlier, but it never seemed the right moment, so I’d like to take this opportunity to say you look lovely.”

“Thank you. Everyone looks good here tonight.” I smiled. The Prince turned around to observe the dinning hall behind us, and his family and guests.

“I suppose you’re right, but that was a smooth way of averting the attention off yourself, and I still say you’re the most stunning one here tonight.” He chuckled, and I joined him while we watched his twin siblings Sonny and Soila. They jumped and skipped about to the music, using their wings to elevate their heights, with no shame. Unlike the Prince, who seemed humbled, and almost embarrassed that he possessed such a beautiful physical feature. I couldn’t help but observe them, they were spectacular and extravagant. He kept them tight against his back and looked down when he noticed me observing them.

“They’re lovely.” I grinned, “Why does it seem like you’d rather have them hidden?” I asked.

“They make your kind uncomfortable. The few we allow to come through are often afraid or repulsed by them in my experience.” He finished.

“They don’t make me uncomfortable, I think they’re magnificent.”

“Well, you’re different Aunya, of all the visitors we’ve had from Niwajuwa, you are the most unique I’ve ever met. My parents seem to think you are destined for greatness as part of a much bigger plan, and a purpose even beyond becoming a Gate Keeper. I’m not sure if they know something we don’t, as both my parents are gifted with insight and enlightenment from The Almighty One and Source. All I know is that whatever you are destined for, I hope we’ll have the opportunity to meet again. I’m sure by now you’ve gathered that balance is a very important theme for us.” He grinned. "You’ll need to find your inner balance Aunya, you seem very capable from your outer appearance, but the true test is what you bring from within. The universe is a place of love, provision and protection, while the crystal lights, large or small, are our source, of guidance, and light energy. Many are confused, even deceived, about what the light truly is, what it symbolizes, and the power it possesses. Just as many are confused and deceived by the darkness, what it truly is, and what it possesses. Dark and light have nothing to do with one being better or worse, or good or evil, than the other. Both the dark and the light possess positive and negative qualities. Evil exists in the light as much as it exists in the dark, and good resides in the darkness, just as it does in the light. The darkness is full, because it has the ability to absorb or reflect the full spectrum of light. Meaning all energy, and every colour you could possibly see exists there, but only as a reflection. It is potential energy waiting to be seen and used. While light is the source of energy, it holds all of the spectrum and frequencies of life, it is the true and pure essence of our existence. Very few can see beyond its bright and white appearance with the naked eye. Those gifted with the awareness of the light within themselves, have or can, gain access to seeing and knowing the secrets beyond the material, and the physical aspects of our universe. As far as dark and light are concerned, one cannot exist without the other, as I’ve stated balance is the purpose, balance is the key to our existence. And balancing the dark and the light within yourself, will allow you to be chosen by the right stone.” He stopped for a moment, and continued with a sigh.

“Some illusions of fear are debilitating, and can stop one from pursuing or achieving their destiny. The peak of Noiz is a test unlike any other you’ve encountered before, I assure you. But don’t panic or stress, just be still, be one with your breath. Focus on your inner strength, courage and love, and your stone will be revealed to you.” Prince Grinso grinned, and then grabbed both my hands, “Lets go dance, they’re having too much fun in there without us!” He exclaimed, pulling me towards the lively celebration. We whirled and twirled, moving to the melody and the beat of the music depending on the song.

“You got moves!” Rendif laughed, “Let’s see if you can keep up with this?” He challenged. Minowe and Jakoa, along with several other guests joined us in a traditional coordinated dance of abundance and blessings. I laughed and danced until I was out of breath and needed to take a seat. After sitting for several moments, Queen Leminna approached me, “May I speak with Aunya?”

“Of course.” I stood immediately bowing in respect, and followed the Queen to the balcony with the most glorious view of The Great Falls, and where I had previously stood with the Prince. She smiled and remained quiet for a few moments, I wasn’t sure what to say or do, so I remained quiet as well.

“I noticed that my son likes you, as does Shikiah, but you are from two different worlds, you will return to Octavia, and one day your gift will be needed more than you know. You possess a unique birth marking, am I right?”

I was taken aback by her question, because she was correct. “Yes, I do.” I answered.

“Don’t be startled, one of my gifts is to fore see the gifts of others.” She smiled warmly. “I have a good sense of ones rhythm, as in the patterns and the cycles that exist for you now, and possibly in the future. I am a guider, and a protector, a builder, and a keeper, as are you Aunya. I have faith that you will succeed tomorrow without a doubt, and that this is only the beginning for you and your true purpose.” She walked around me slowly, her wings shimmered and sparkled with all the colours of the rainwater arch. The arches only appeared during times of rain fall, when the firelight hit against the drops at just the right angle, allowing the division of colours to be displayed in an arch that reached across the sky. “May I see your marking?”

Again, without hesitation I said, “Of course.” The beautiful guani I wore was sleeveless, so it was just a matter of shifting the sash aside, so she could observe the base of the left side of my neck. She gently grazed my neck with her fingers, as she eyed it. I didn’t often see it because it was on my back, but I knew it was about the size of my thumb, and was shaped like a star, formed by four diamond shapes pointing towards a small circle in the centre. My parents had been very protective and adamant about keeping the marking a secret, always ensuring my neck was covered. Anything different or out of the ordinary was often frowned upon in Octavia. Although it was a beautiful and happy place to live, there were specific rules and laws governing what was acceptable and what was not.

My mother was nervous that my marking was one of those things that would make others feel uncomfortable, and possibly even threatened. She feared that this could result in them taking me away from her, like they took my father. She always assured me that nothing was wrong with me, in fact, it was quite the opposite, she reassured me that I was special, and gifted. So from a young age, I was trained to stay quiet about the marking, which always remained covered. I guess that was part of the reason my stomach dipped, when the Queen had made reference to it.

“Did you notice it looks similar to our crest?” She asked.

“Yes! That’s it, I knew the crest looked familiar the first time I saw it, but I couldn’t quite place it at first.” I exclaimed.

“We call it the flower of life, it’s very important to us, hence why you see its image displayed everywhere. Our story of origin says Source of all Sources planted the seed here millions of years ago, and The Almighty One nurtured the seed, giving it water, casting light and singing to it with love from within her heart. And one day a beautiful flower blossomed from the soil, and from it a whole garden grew. It is said that from that first flower came the first five generations of our ancestors. The story also says, that each petal had a unique characteristic, which were imprinted upon different individuals, giving way to unique gifts. But one day there was a monstrous storm that ravaged the land, one of the flowers was said to be yanked from the garden and sent whirling into the storm. It was forced into the greatest depths of the waters creating Sufusobu on its decent, and finally the world of Niwajuwa. The only thing, was that on its amazing journey, one petal had been torn away, and is said to be lost forever, even unto this day.”

“Wow… I’ve never heard this version, but we have a similar story of the flower of life back home.” I was left full of wonder, and new questions began to pop up in my head.

She pulled back the row of bangles that lined her wrist, and shared the marking that was identical to mine, except she had the fifth diamond that made up the royal emblem, and made the shape look fuller.

“We are kindred spirits Aunya, we both possess the marking of the great flowers. Me, the flower of life, and you, the star light flower, which is a gift from the waters to the light crystals. Both are a symbol of unity, balance and love. They are the energy that passes through and beyond this realm, and the next. They are a celebration of life, of light, of dark, of death, and of birth. It’s a continuous cycle, and one we celebrate with honour and pride here.” She smiled. “There are few who are born with markings, but the ones who are, are workers of the light and the dark. They are sent by The Almighty One with a purpose to protect, or effect the course of our world and events in a particular time, and place. Your marking is a source of great power, a gift from even beyond The Almighty One, it has come straight from Source. You are right to continue to keep it hidden in Octavia and from your fellow warriors, but here, it symbolizes your greatness.” She paused.

“Do you know what the rising star flower means or what it does?”

“I’ve heard some stories of it back home, I know it’s very rare.” I nodded.

“As a marking, it is a gift of great and unprecedented power, as the great rising star flower, is rare, and found only among the mountain of Noiz, here in Nunubia, not anywhere else in Wakakowe. It only blooms every 400 years, and instead of wilting and perishing as most flowers do when they die, in its final stages, the star shaped flower detaches from its roots and ascends, floating upwards towards the skies. It glows brightly on its journey, like the light of the largest, roundest, nightlight, as it makes its way towards the millions of smaller twinkling nightlight crystals. The transition only happens in the darkness of the night, enhancing the beauty of the flowers illumination. The rising star flower is a beginning, and an end to a cycle of a generation, their accomplishments, and their curses. We believe the rising star flower represents the souls of the past and the future, and many believe that the star flowers petals, are those awaiting their next mission within the presence. The link between the past and the future is the presence, Niwajuwa is the present, but Wakakowe is the past, the present and the future, it is the Nation that is above all time.” She finished.

I was stunned and intrigued. I had never connected the dots between my marking and the rare star light flower. Nunubia’s belief around the flower was pretty much identical in description to the stories told in Octavia.

“I never thought about the connection Queen Leminna. I have to admit I’m a bit shocked by your insight and information. What does this mean for me, if I have this marking? Am I supposed to do something significant, and what is it? What am I supposed to do? What do I have to do to make sure I fulfill my destiny? I don’t want to fail, if I have such a great responsibility to the universe and the Nations. What’s my purpose? What am I supposed to do?” I repeated.

“Aunya, Aunya, calm down my dear.” The Queen chuckled. “All you need to do is continue to be you. Follow your heart, listen to your intuition, that inner wisdom where truth is revealed most. Purpose does not always come over night Aunya, it’s a process, a journey so to speak. For some it’s clear and may appear sooner in life, even changing over time, evolving as you do, but purpose is not about perfection, it’s about progression. It’s about bringing forth your gifts to share with others, but discovering and cultivating those gifts takes time. Then you can add value and meaning not just to your life, but others too.” She replaced the sash over my shoulder gently. “ Let’s go sit down and finish our conversation.”

I followed her inside, as my mind raced with a million thoughts.

“Can your purpose change? I always believed I would be the greatest Gate Keeper of all time, and that has been my goal, my mission and what I thought was my purpose… up to now.” I gasped.

“I believe we are all destined for one great purpose, but yes, along the journey of life, which is a process, through circumstances, opportunities, and experiences, our purpose may morph through our decisions, our mistakes, our challenges, even through learning curves, and through mastery, which can all lead us to our ultimate purpose. For a season and a time, our purpose may be one focus, this allows us to master whatever tools we’ll need for the next chapter, leading us closer to our destined purpose. There is great meaning and potential in every stage of our lives. We may be lead down many different paths, which are determined by our own choices and decisions. It truly is about the journey, what you experience and what you learn. Nothing is perfect in any realm, in any stage, or in any phase, it’s not about perfection my dear, I’ll say it again, its about the progression. It’s that ability to keep moving, keep going, and having faith, being resilient is a gift on its own. Never give up Aunya, if you’re not certain of your purpose, continue to search your heart, your mind and your soul, and it will be revealed to you. A hint, is that it is usually revealed through your gifts, through those natural abilities and talents. Your instincts and your intuition are your greatest guides. Listen closely and the Almighty One will send you all the answers you’ll ever need.” The Queen finished speaking. King Rabnoc approached and extended his hand, “May I have this dance?” He asked her smoothly.

“Absolutely.” She smiled. “Aunya, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to enjoy the final dance for the night.” She motioned towards the Prince who was making his way towards us. “Perhaps you should do the same.” The King assisted her up as she extended her hand towards his, and together they began to glide across the floor of gold and stone. I observed how their wings expanded and then narrowed against their backs with every sway and every swoop, it was beautiful to watch.

“May I have the honours?” I heard the smooth confident voice of Prince Nos request, only a moment later. I grinned before looking up to accept his offer, “Sure.” I replied lifting my hand to his. He swooped me literally off my feet for a moment, as we began to glide across the floor to the soft melody. With my hand on his shoulder and his on my waist, and our opposite hands clasped together, we coasted from one spot to another. It was fun, and I couldn’t help but to laugh and smile. He let go of my waist and spun me around a few times, I noticed Rendif and the others watching, and dancing with their own partners they had chosen. At one point Rendif and I passed so closely I heard him say, “Who knew we’d be dancing tonight?” He laughed and smiled as he whirled away with his partner. When the music came to an end, everyone clapped, and King Rabnoc made a final announcement for the evening.

“Thank you respected guests for such a wonderful evening, as we celebrate the next great Keepers of the Gates fulfilling their final quest before taking the oath. We are honoured and excited. The day comes quickly, so let us all take rest for tomorrows events.” The King took the Queens hand and they disappeared behind one of the high, heavy drapes, with the twins right behind them. Slowly everyone bid each other a good night and the small crowd, became smaller and smaller. Until it was only Prince Nos with Shikiah, my fellow warriors and I, and a few attendants, who still remained.

“Good night to you all, my father is right, tomorrow will be an eventful day and you’ll need all the rest you can get.”

He gave my hand an extra tight squeeze, and flashed his usual grin, “Good night Aunya.” With that he walked away with two of the attendants and Shikiah who followed close behind.

“Wow, look like you guys are getting kinda close. Be careful Aunya, the heart can be easily persuaded and deceived. Common judgement can be clouded, and you may find yourself in a state of vulnerability, not a trait of a true warrior.” I glared at Rendif as he continued. “I’ve known you well for a very long time, and I’m not one to pry or judge, but nwyanni tend to be a little more emotional and more easily attached to situations of the heart. I don’t want you to get hurt, or be disappointed.” Rendif warned.

“How dare you even imply that my heart is being persuaded! You’re completely out of line, and for the record, this nwyanni, is not like the rest, hence why I”m standing here with you!” I fumed.

“Sorry Aunya, I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, just being a friend. Remember we are at the age.”

He had a point, and I did like Prince Grinso, and although the idea had only briefly crossed my mind, I knew my mind, and I wasn’t interested. Rendif’s reference to “the age” was the age of coupling, which was the time in ones life that they began to look at prospects for marriage and building a family. We were all around the age of coupling, including me. Octavian’s in my age group of early adulthood, began the process with traditional meetings and celebrations to introduce the prospects safely, and comfortably.

My mother, my uncle, and several of my great aunts had already begun speaking of me preparing for coupling. I knew that coupling wasn’t something I was interested in anytime soon. I wanted to dedicate myself to the Gates of Octavia. I didn’t look down upon the process, or the roles that couples played in our communities, they were the ones building families, and creating generations, but in my heart I knew it wasn’t my purpose, at least not now.

Three attendants stepped forward to escort us back to our rooms. Before we turned down different corridors, I wanted Rendif to know that I wasn’t upset with him.

“I know you meant well, and I’m sorry for getting a little heated. Just know, that I know my own heart, and I’m following it into the Peak of Noiz tomorrow. I will be one of the greatest Gate Keepers Octavia has ever had, and nothing will stand in the way of that. Thanks for looking out, but I’m good.” I assured him. “Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, let’s see who comes out with their stone first?” I challenged playfully, punching him lightly on the arm. “It’ll be me!” He called down the corridor smiling from ear to ear before disappearing behind a corner. I continued to follow the attendant in front of me to my room, which was just as magnificent as when I had left it earlier. I slept like a baby on the beautiful bed made for royalty.

Even though the majority of the day was cloaked in darkness, the daylight seemed to arrive with the light of dawn, far more intensely and brightly than back home, where the dawn arrived gradually moving from dark to light. We had been woken promptly to get dressed and ready to go. Breakfast was another grand feast of provision, We sat around the same dinning table for breakfast provisions. The early provisions were suited for kings, and queens, and warriors. It was soon time to gather our belongings, and set out to retrieve our stones.

I was so excited, I bounced down the walkway through the royal gardens that lead to the more rugged path leading up the mountains side. Prince Nos lead us in silence, he was focused and serious. His wings were uncovered and so were the smaller wings of his entourage. I could begin to feel our ascent as the path began to incline upwards towards the peak of the mountain, which was still a great distance away.

It was beautiful, as was everything in Nunubia. The trail was luscious and green, dotted with floral burst of colours and scents, large trees and tall plants reached high towards the skies, and shrubs and mosses lined the ground beneath our feet. So far the climb was pleasant, we had dipped past and under a few of the lower falls, as we progressed closer to our destination.

Unexpectedly, the Prince stopped. “Warriors of Octavia, Protectors of Sufusobu, and soon to be Keepers of the Great Stone, the time has come for us to part, leaving you to complete your journey. I know you have been given new maps to help you navigate the mountain side, which is pretty simple, just stay on this trail, and you should be fine. It may get a little more complicated inside, as you seek for the Great Hall of Stones. When you enter the peak, you must enter individually, the peak only allows one to enter at a time, if you don’t follow that law, you’ll be greatly sorry. Once you enter, the peaks law of separation will never allow you to cross paths. Once inside the Great Hall, remember to feel with your warrior heart, and seek to connect to a stone with true intention and purpose. Depending on the strength and intensity of your truth and connection, the stone that chooses you will be released into your hand, with very little effort. All the best, I look forward to seeing each of you and what you’ve discovered on your return.” With that, the Prince and his guards turned around.

The daylight was already coming close to its end, as the crystal light dipped lower in the skies, hovering just above the horizon. The odd hours of day light were still something I was adjusting to.

“Well, then I guess this is it. Let’s do this!” Minowe encouraged, and turned to continue up the mountain.

“Up we go!” Jakoa chimed in. Rendif and I exchanged glances, and without any words, only the smiles on our face, we followed. The higher up we climbed, the more I noticed slight differences, such as in the air pressure and the added heat as King Rabnoc had mentioned. A few things he had not mention, were the light crystals that were tucked within the wedges of rocks and foliage, there was far less foliage all together up here. Looking out over the view from where I stood, the land looked vast, and was incredibly breathtaking. We were now so close to the top, that the palace looked minuscule. The next bend was sharper than all the rest, and when we came around it, we knew we had arrived at the peak.

The opening of the peak was a dark cave. Some foliage hung from above and thick green moss grew heavily over the rocky exterior. It looked black and narrow inside, as heat and steam billowed out. “It looks like we're here. That was easy enough.” Jakoa observed.

“Not really,” I Replied, “the real test begins inside, remember? The cave is designed to show you your greatest fears, testing your willpower and your inner knowledge, to see if you know what is real and what is not, what is truth and what is not, and to see if you can fight against the traps of fear and it’s illusions. Getting here was the easy part, as you know, only one of us can enter at a time, so who wants to do the honours?” I asked.

“I’ll go!” Minowe jumped excitedly. “I’m ready for this, I feel like I’ve been ready my whole life.” Without hesitation, he stepped inside without a trace.

“Who’ll go next?” Rendif wanted to know.

“You go next.” Jakoa suggested to him. Rendif paused for a moment, and then nodded his head in agreement. “Okay, I’ll go. See you guys on the other side.” He smiled and stepped passed the mossy opening into the black, narrow, and steamy cave.

“Well, that just leaves you and me, Aunya.” Jakoa noted.

“It does.” I stated. “It doesn’t matter which one of us goes next, as long as we don’t go together.” I reminded.

“Ladies first? I have to admit Aunya, I’m a little scared. I’ve been really excited up to this point. I’m afraid of what I might see in there, doesn’t the legend say the illusions can be your worst nightmare? Well, some of my deepest fears are pretty brutal. I’m beginning to question if I can do this. Hey, maybe we could enter together?” He almost pleaded.

“Really Jakoa? One of the only warnings and laws, was not to enter with anyone, we both know we must enter individually. I’m not trying to see what happens if we defy that law. However, I believe in you. There’s a reason you’re here, I’ve seen you in action, you are a warrior, and even the best of us have fears. Whatever those fears may be, what makes us warriors, is not running away, denying, or avoiding our fears, like many do, but facing them head on. I think the whole thing is that fear is an illusion, only made real by our perception, and the peak is a test of that, testing our warrior spirit, you are brave enough to face whatever darkness exists for you. Because when you realize it really is just an illusion, and you overcome it, you’ll be empowered like never before. How about this, you go next, so that I can hold you accountable, if I go next and you just take off, you may regret it for the rest of your life. Come on Jakoa, you got this!” I encouraged. He was quiet for a while and then nodded, he grabbed his daggers, and then walked into the cave, disappearing into the shadows of its innards.

Now it was my turn. I remembered the Prince’s advice to stay calm, not to panic and to focus on my breath. I took the small light crystal mother had wrapped for me, out of my travel pack and placed it in my pocket for easier access, then grabbed my bow, and one arrow. The least I could do, was go in as prepared as possible. The unknown was a scary place to be, but I realized everyday we face the unknown, even with daily duties and predictable schedules, one never really does know what a new day may bring. I knew that it wasn’t necessarily what happened, but how we responded to a situation, that was most important. My spiritual master Obah always reminded us that reacting was easy, but responding was a process, that you often only had a few seconds to work out. With only a little bit of time to choose, the decision was hugely impactful on what could or would happen next. With that thought, I recognized that it was my time to face my illusions.

I stepped forward and entered the cave, it was dark and very quiet, soon the little bit of light that was being cast from the opening behind me disappeared as I stepped further inside. “Hello?” I called, wondering if the others were anywhere close, or if it was even possible for them to hear me. There was no sign of anybody else, I reached for my crystal light, and all around I could see that the inner walls of the cave were shiny, reflective like glass. I saw myself reflected over and over again, with every step that I took. The jagged blue rocks protruded from both the ceiling and the ground, it was slightly steamy and I could feel the intensity of the heat. Suddenly, I noticed the glass reflections began to get very foggy, my image was distorted, and I looked wobbly and long. Breathe I reminded myself, taking my focus off my own image, that’s when I noticed something move out of the corner of my eye,

“Who’s there?” I questioned spinning around in the foggy mist that had appeared to thicken immensely. A huge dark shadow lifted up in front of me. “It’s just an illusion.” I whispered under my breath. The so called illusion grew larger and larger, its shadow taking up the whole area in front of where I stood, until suddenly I could feel a cold take over the heated room, and before me appeared a great beast, with fangs that hung like blades in all directions, sticky drool hung and dripped from it’s mouth and two large eyes glowed red with rage. Its scaly body was lean and black, its tail was heavy and fast, as it whipped around bouncing off the inner walls of the cave, creating rocks to crumble and fall all around me. It’s claws were fiercely sharp, and it roared releasing flames of excruciating heat and fire, which came directly towards my head. I ducked! The heat had singed the top of my bow, some illusion, this wasn’t! I thought. This was very real, as real as anything I’d ever experienced. I jumped back up with my arrow pulled, and aimed for the beasts throat, as another blast of heat and flames was released in my direction. This time the flames stopped short of where I stood and began to transmute, I could see my father, he looked scared, and I recognized the young girl in his arms, it was me. He seemed to be lost, looking around frantically, and then suddenly, it was as though he was pulled away, and the young version of me was falling. “No!” I cried out, grabbing out to catch her, when the searing pain of fire wrapped around my flesh, causing me to cringe back, and fall in agony.

The flames began to enclose around me, as the beast stomped about in a circular motion. Through the invisible waves of heat that resinated off the flames, I caught a glimpse of the opening that led deeper into the peak of the cave, I was sure that I needed to get through there to get to the Great Hall of Stones. I stood to my feet, knowing I had to defeat the dragon-like beast and move on. As I began to rise, so did the fire and the flames, moving around me in a swooping pattern, as they transmuted into yet another scenario. I could see myself again, but this time I was much older, and I looked tired and unhappy as I walked among the crowds of the Octavian Gates. Where was my uniform and my sword? Was I not a Gates Keeper? What was going on? Beside me I noticed some young children bouncing around, and then without warning the crowds began to run in fear, as I turned around I saw Twendolian soldiers, and the same great beast flailing fire and fangs at me currently, accompanied them. The beast began to devour individuals, and I could literally hear the screams of terror and pain.

"Fear not, for fear is just an illusion, perpetuated and enlarged by your regard. Avert your attention to love, its frequency stifles fear. Focus on the courage of the heart, and on bravery of the mind. My young warrior…" I remembered the words of my father.

I went to grab my bow and arrow, but it wasn’t there. Daggers, but they weren’t there! I wasn’t a Gate Keeper! How was I to help my tribe members? How was I supposed to protect Octavia? Without another warning the great beast jumped forward in front of me. “This is not right!” I hollered aloud, which echoed throughout the cave. “This isn’t real!” I cried, grabbing my bow and arrows, standing bravely in front of the beast, as images of my worst fears continued playing out. Not being able to protect the very thing that I valued most, and not being recognized as a Gate Keeper, was heart breaking. Behind those gates, were my family, my tribe, my culture, my memories and my pride!

“Ro Kozo kamats! Ro Kozo kamats!” I cried out. Pulling back on my arrow and aiming straight for the open mouth of the fire breathing beast, my first arrow hit just where I had intended, and the beast flailed in pain. With no hesitation I pulled the next arrow from my pack, aimed and fired, this time the beast stumbled back and roared uncontrollably. The entire mountain shook, and stones and debris loosened and fell around me, but without another thought, I moved closer, grabbing another arrow, placing it in my bow and shot again. It released with great force like the others, but this time it hit the beast straight between the eyes. The beast stumbled and the fire it had been breathing began to dissipate, replaced by smoke, that filled the air and my lungs. I began to cough profusely, but was determined to fire one last arrow to ensure my safety, and my passing into the Hall of Stones. This time the arrow fell deep into the chest of the beast, its black body shrivelled and deflated against the ground in a black fiery mist that hovered for a moment before completely disappearing.

I coughed a few more times before looking around to see my arrows lain strewn on the floor of the cave. The fire light crystal I had tucked in my pocket had fallen out and sat snug between two protruding fragments of the blue rock. I peered around at the suddenly quiet, still room, as the vapours of smoke disappeared, and only a very little bit of light from my crystal light cast shadows about the room. It gave me just enough light to see where I needed to enter, to get what I had come for. I grabbed my crystal light and ran towards the opening on the other side of the room of the cave.

I notice my eyes begin to glow with the inner glow, that had unexpectedly transformed my vision on the first night I had arrived. It must be dark out now, I thought to myself, as I navigated deeper into the darkness in front of me. I remembered King Rabnoc’s mention of taking the stone within the darkest hour of night, and hoped my timing would be just right. Everything lit up with the light that shone through my eyes, allowing me to tuck my light crystal back into my pocket. As I went deeper I started see and hear the trickling of water seeping through and down the sides of the inner walls of the mountain. The sounds of drips and drops echoed, and were almost a comfort as their rhythm reminded me of the waters back home, next to the small brook that I spent many hours next to, resting, and meditating. I continued walking forward, and began to notice a hazy blue glow among the inner workings of the rocks, which soon created a beautiful display of gleaming lights, with a rich brilliance that let me know I was exactly where I needed to be.

These were the great stones, some poked through the stone showing off their smooth shiny surface, some stones were sealed just beneath the surface, while others beamed through the small areas of flowing water. Maybe it was the extra gift of light vision, but immediately I noticed a larger blue glow than all the rest. It sat beneath some rushing water in the corner of the cave. Ducking a few times to avoid the jagged rock areas that jetted downwards from above, I moved towards it. My mind was focused on one thing, and now, one stone. I stopped for a moment, I breathed deeply and knew what my true purpose was. I was a warrior, a protector of not one tribe, but many, just as my gifts were many. I may not have understood the potential of my gifts as of yet, or even who I was fully, but I remembered someone saying that nothing happens by chance, there is no coincidence, as everything happens for a reason. This was my reason.

The stone was wedged between two segments of the wall. I reached my hand in and through the running waters, it felt cool and smooth washing over my wrist and hand. I yanked on the stone which didn’t budge, and then I remembered that it was the stone that would choose me, and although I knew this was the one, it hadn’t chosen me yet. I knelt on the ground beside the small flow of water that seeped over the floor of the Great Hall of Stones, it was one of many small streams. I placed my hands within the water source, closed my eyes, and released any thoughts and expectations I held around this moment. I let go of any thoughts or previous beliefs I held about the stone, and about myself, except that I was a warrior. I freed myself to just be me, and to be conscious of the present moment. In doing so, I freed the stone to join me in letting go. A moment later I heard a large plunk, and a few splashes of cool water hit the side of my cheek. I opened my eyes to see the freed stone laying at the bottom of the small stream. It was huge, I had never seen such a massive stone, I stared for a moment, mesmerized by the pattern of rolling waters within its core. It was as though the currents of the great waters rolled over and over inside the stone, it radiated with a low deep blue hue. My eyes were wide in awe and anticipation, it was beautiful.

As I went to reach for it, it burst with a flash of light, before slowly lifting itself into the air. Small beads of water assembled around it, and it floated amidst the air towards me. It stopped, hovering in front of me, I lifted my hand slowly, and just as slowly, the stone lowered and landed softly in the palm of my hand. The water droplets that had been floating around it, dropped quickly back to the ground, wetting my hand and the stone as they fell. The stone sent an electric pulse of energy through my hand and body, much like the one I had encountered when I first met Prince Nos. It wasn’t painful at all, it was quite the opposite, it was empowering.

I stood to my feet, holding the precious gem of the lythmeric stone, that now belonged to me. I felt it had chosen well, and I was honoured and filled with a joy and a pride I had never felt before. I couldn’t take my eyes off it, as I headed for the exit. I soon found myself outside the mountains peak, and stood amongst my fellow warriors, Minowe and Rendif. We were waiting for Jakoa, who I recalled had been very nervous to enter. I hoped he was okay, and sure enough a few moments later, a smiling Jakoa appeared in the entrance. We all stood in silence, unable to wipe the smiles from our faces, or even come up with the words to express the triumphant feeling of victory, and accomplishment. Together, we headed down Mount Noiz laughing and bantering, sharing our stories of the experience we had encountered within the cave. Each of us experienced something completely different, yet equally as terrifying. We had all overcome the illusion of our greatest fears, and were about to be presented with a sword. Our lythmeric stone would sit in the hilt of our newly awarded sword, for protection and guidance, as we took our oaths, as Gate Keepers.

The skies were very dark although it was only just after dinner. We were dressed in the honourable Gate Keeper’s uniform, which now included a low hanging helmet of gold plated alloy. The helmet hung over our foreheads and ears, lightly hitting the top of our shoulders. We still wore our metal mesh vests, with the addition of a wide gold waist band, the only thing missing now, was our swords. We bowed before the King and Queen of Nunubia. There was a multitude of witnesses, and I could see the Prince and his guards standing close at the front of the room. There were several officials, and what seemed to be the entire kingdom, who had come out to witness our oath ceremony. The Prince grinned of course, and gave a nod of approval and pride in my direction. The Queen stepped forward and began to speak to the crowd.

“Once certain things are revealed to you, you can no longer see things as they use to be, sometimes everything changes, and along with it, your perspective. For better or worse, things never remain the same, and you must evolve or be dissolved. If you want to grow, if you want to elevate, you accept the changes, which are most often a process of acknowledgement, forgiveness and healing. Depending on the scenario, experience or situation, the process may vary in length and time, but you must let go. Let go of what you thought you knew, let go of the old version of you. Let go of whatever no longer serves you, because it will just weigh you down mentally, physically and spiritually. Release yourself, you deserve what’s coming next.” She smiled and continued.

“Fore all things work towards your greater good, for you are a part of a system, a natural order, that strives for balance, peace, and harmony. Allow yourself to receive your gifts with gratitude and honour. Use them to fulfil your destiny by discovering a purpose like no other, a purpose designed and set forth specifically for the unique light, energy, and individual you are. You are not one, but of one. You are part of the all, part of the universe, and part of a greater purpose. Every individual purpose fulfilled, brings us closer together in unity, love, and in balance. Stand now great warriors, Gate Keepers of Octavia, and of Sufusobu, the water portal of the upper world of Wakakowe, and the land of Nunubia. Repeat after me as you take the oath of the Great Stone & the Gate Keepers Quest.” She paused, giving us a moment to follow her lead.

“I am the Warrior and Protector of Octavia, Sufusobu, and Nunubia. I am the Keeper of loyalty, devotion, and balance. At all costs I vow to protect the Great lytnmeric Stone, and any gates that lead to the heart of the great water source. I vow to fulfill my contract as Gate Keeper to the worlds of Niwajuwa and Wakakowe.”

The Queens dark eyes seemed to light up as she smiled, the aura around her was bright and warm. There was an energy of celebration and joy. The King stood and flared his massive wings up high, as though he wanted to fly. I noticed the inside of his wings were embellished with the emblem of Nunubia’s five pointed star, the flower of life. Their larger size, allowed me to observe the beautiful detail of the fancy “S” shaped swirls, that filled each diamond shaped petal. The emblems glowed a fiery red, and his voice boomed with an authority, that filled the air.

“Place the tips of your swords together.” He instructed. “Now take the stone that has chosen you, and place it against the hilt of your sword.”

Our swords were white gold in honour of the purest light, encrusted with the now familiar swirls within the five pointed star of Nunubia, best depicted in detail by King Rabnoc’s inner wings. Only the swords of a Gate Keeper were permitted to be double bladed, and within a moment of our double bladed collaboration, a bolt of energy and light surged from the skies, and down through our swords and stones. Our lyhtmeric stones became one with the sword, embedded within their hilts. My stone was the largest in size, and I’d never seen any Keepers at the Gates of Octavia, or here, who’s stones compared to it. I said nothing, and neither did anyone else.

We were all a bit stunned by the power surge, and relieved, as we laid eyes on our new swords. One by one we placed our swords back within our sheaths. We gave thanks to our hosts, and the villagers, and officials who had attended the ceremony, as many of them approached, to congratulate us on our accomplishments and commitment to serve and protect the Gates. As things began to settle down, we were escorted away from the crowds to a place behind the palace, to a sweet scented garden, under a very large, and I imagined very old tree. There were five round, substantially sized stones, that sat flush against the ground. They were lythmeric stones! I knew because of the soft blue glow that emanated from within, along with the rhythmic movement of flowing waters.

“Stand on a stone, and then touch the stone in your sword. Close your eyes, and imagine home.” Prince Nos paused, his face was serious for the first time that I could recall. He stepped forward, moving away from Shikiah and his royal guards to approach me. He stood for a moment looking into my eyes, before slowly reaching for my hands. He lifted them, one after the other, holding them within his own. He grinned before gently kissing the back of each one of my hands, then released them, just as gently as he taken them. “Farewell Gate Keepers. Warriors of courage, balance and truth.” He nodded as he backed away, and that was the last thing I remember.
