After docking in Beirut, Malden telegraphed back to London, and Arthur delivered instructions to travel to Baghdad after their quest. Then, they descended deep into the Badiya.

Lush plains surrendered to unyielding desert. Thankfully, Gregor’s Bedouin guides knew every grain of sand and guided them well, despite their coldness. Malden saw the wounds of the campaigns against Ottomans in their eyes. He slept with his pistol close.

“You feel it too, eh?” Gregor said as they skirted a ravine. Below, Jacob saw where the sands failed to cover the skeletal mounds.

“An evil place. Hopefully, the only one we pass.”
