As Beth walks towards her doom, she can’t help but realize that if she hadn’t adopted Greg the world wouldn’t be ending, for that was when all of this nonsense had started. She wasn’t sure if she should be blaming herself or Greg, it’s not like it was his fault, he knew nothing about it. Plus, at that age he was too young to understand, if Beth managed to save the world, this young 3-year-old wouldn’t even remember any of the events he had to endure. He may have a few vague memories as he grew up, with holes filled in by stories and tales. But, he would never remember his first adoptive mother.
As Beth gets closer and closer to her fate, she can't help but think of her plan and feel overwhelming sadness over the people she’ll have to leave. She is supposed to calmly go talk to the leader and offer herself for the fight, which will be incredibly hard for her as she simultaneously battles such intense emotions. You see, to save the world someone has to fight the leader, a nearly immortal creature, and kill him but even if you manage to kill him you will still die. So basically it’s die painfully in a fight, or die peacefully after saving the world from a slow painful death by fire. The reason for this unusual fight was that there needed to be a mortal sacrifice to save the world, but if the vampire king still lived he would just start over the process, so you had to kill him AND sacrifice yourself for it all to work.
She was now standing outside the entrance to the cave after walking 2 miles up the mountain to it. She had already said her goodbyes, but now she felt like they weren’t enough. She wanted to go back and say something more to Tony, to tell him to make sure that Greg would understand truly what happened and not just myths; to tell him- her train of thought was caught off by a deep voice telling her to enter.
Fear filled her deep to her core, Beth was not at all ready for this, emotionally or physically. Somehow, deep down she knew that something was wrong, something wasn’t going to go like planned. She wasn't sure what yet, but she knew something unexpected and breathtaking was going to happen, but she couldn’t figure out why as she tumbled into the menacing cavern of horrors. Her breathing started to pick up as adrenaline and terror stole her senses, she had never even seen the leader, she had no clue what he was like, or even what he looked like. She assumed he would look similar to the rest of them, with their unusually pale skin and alluring amber eyes, their terrifyingly beautiful eyes paired with a set of bright white, sharp teeth.
She was hoping that the leader, which she had heard goes by Talon, a very fitting name she thought even though she had never met him. Her last happy thought before seeing the gorgeous yet murderous creature was, at least he doesn’t have a cliche vampire name like Edward. As she entered the main part of the cave, which to be honest, seemed like a mansion, fabulously decorated and ginormous, with a large sized pit sitting in the very middle, which Beth assumed, accurately, was for fights. She could still see splatters of dried blood on the walls of the arena and smell a very faint metallic smell indicating that there was a battle not too long ago.
Beth didn’t focus on these details for very long though as her breath was taken away, she looked up at the at least 6”6’ female vampire who was glaring down at her somehow still looking lovely even with that nasty expression on her face. Beth was not at all expecting the leader, Talon, to be a female, for the most part only males got the major roles, especially when it came to more violent tasks. But she knew she shouldn’t underestimate her, that her being a female was actually an advantage to her, for people usually downgrade women who fight.
Beth couldn’t keep her mouth from falling open at the sight of Talon, she was in awe of her beauty and height, she couldn’t help but wonder what her age was, vampires though not fully immortal could live a very long time, much longer than any human, and were admittingly a lot harder to kill. To permanently kill one, you had to either drive a stake through its heart, which she didn’t have, or manage to decapitate it, which was easier said than done.
“Did you come here to fight or just stare at me?” asked Talon in a shockingly deep and gloomy voice.
“I c-c-came to fight” Beth mumbled back, trying to steady her shaky voice.
“Pathetic,” Talon whispered before continuing, “did you bring a weapon?”
“I didn’t know if I was allowed to,” Beth replied, her shaky voice already starting to steady as the adrenaline kicked in.
“Idiot, how else do you think we would fight,” Talon roared back, anger apparent in her face, “here, have this sword, it’s not very good but MAYBE you should’ve brought your own weapon” Talon continued with a glare.
“When do we st-start?” Beth tried to casually ask, failing miserably.
“NOW, head to the pit” Talon ominously vocalized.
By the time Beth had climbed down the stairs to the pit, she was overcome by exhaustion, first from the 2-mile hike, then from having to climb down 2 flights of stairs, the vampires seemed to have an odd thing for the number 2. Beth had felt rushed climbing down the stairs also because she couldn’t help but notice that the vampire queen had made it to the pit long before her, for she could move at the speed of light, making Beth seem like a sloth in comparison to her.
Once Beth was down there and ready to fight, a group of vampires suddenly appeared around the pit, cheering on their master, ready to watch another helpless human die. This made Beth feel like even more pressure was put on her, and she was sure that if somehow, she managed to kill this monster, that the spectators would start a frenzy and ambush.
