The End and The Beginning

History will forever repeat

By Akeva ClarkePublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Sky glaciers crashing down amongst the last stable objects on earth. Fire and smoke are my last memories of there. Over the past 7 years things have begun to fade but I will never forget the people. People on top of people, crying for people, fighting for people, trying to save people. While being drug through the sand during our escape I managed to grasp a heart-shaped locket. It was the only thing that connected me to people during our time away. Our rocket ship survived an impossible take off and we knew we were all that was left to mankind. Leaving us to rebuild with nothing. No friends, no family, no help. The Rocketship (we call her Dawn) remains our home as we begin the journey back to earth. After 263 miscarriages we managed to birth our daughter Omega. We hope to find a survived soul to save humanity.

We covered over each other in silence for what seemed like a thousand seconds. Still in silence Rex and I looked into each other’s souls and knew we were ready for whatever was behind those doors. We both took Omega by the hand and pushed open the doors. For another thousand seconds we stood there. We turned in a circle as our mouths dropped. Feeling heavy and sluggish we quickly began to struggle to lift our feet. Rex falls to the ground then me. Blacked out and gasping for air, I began to think this is the end (again). I hand Omega the heart-shaped locket and……….

The sky looked like fighting lightening. Loud sounds of voices, motors, music, and unrecognizable animals compiled into one. Many buildings as tall as one could see, no roads, no visible corners, or boundaries in site. People are walking many people are walking, but no one seems to be interacting with one another. Looking closer everything appears to be a holographic representation of former life on earth. People eating, shopping, walking, and speaking out loud.

Five-year-old Omega finds herself crawling on top of a pavement that presents itself for her every move. She holds the heart-shaped locket tight as she moves. She begins to feel an emotion she has never felt. She waits as a tear rolls down her face. Unsure of the wet substance she’s confused. As more tears begin to fall, the pathway disappears before her, she falls and hits heavy on an unseen boundary. She finds herself in some kind of virtual trash. Malfunctioning people, glitchy buildings, static sounds and much darker than before.

Omega begins to speak to a woman who only responds “Yes, only to the end”. Omega ask if she would walk with her. As she begins her journey, she comes across a bird that can only fly one way. He leads her to a virtual water fall that can not wet her. As she begins to cry a boy comes from the water. Towering over her he says, “You are real”. “Real people do not live here anymore.” Relieved she nods. “How do you know?” said Omega. I know because of your tears said the boy. We do not see tears here he said. He begins to show Omega the way around the new world. He teaches her words, skills and hacks to survive the new world. Through time Omega reprograms the boy to feel touch. The boy touches her for the first time and her hear-shaped locket falls to the ground. It lands open to a picture of a boy and girl. He reaches down and picks up the locket. His internal intelligence mutates to the boy in the picture and as he touches Omega, she transforms into the girl in the picture. The boy turns to Omega and says “I am Adam and I needed you to begin”.
