The Echoes of Time

A Dark Thriller of Timelines and Consequences

By R. ZainfisPublished 3 years ago 5 min read

Prologue

Time travel is not what you think it is. It's not all excitement and adventure. There's a darkness that comes with the ability to slip through time. A weight that you carry with you, a price that must be paid.

I discovered my ability by accident, stumbling through a portal in time and finding myself in a different era. At first, it was exhilarating, like being a kid in a candy store. I could go anywhere, see anything, do anything.

But then the nightmares started. Dark visions of a place that shouldn't exist, a realm of horror and death that seemed to be calling out to me. And then the shadows appeared, the ones that lurk at the edges of my vision, watching me, waiting for me.

I've learned that there's a price to pay for my ability, a cost that I pay every time I travel through time. It's not just the danger of altering history, but the risk of losing myself in the process. The whispers that invade my mind, the visions of death and destruction, they're all part of the price.

I can't stop, though. The lure of the unknown is too great, the promise of knowledge and power beyond anything I could ever imagine. But I know that one day, the shadows will come for me, to claim what I owe them. And when they do, I'll have to face my worst fears, and hope that I can survive with my sanity and my soul intact.

It's a dangerous game, this time travel. And I, the one who travels through time, know it better than anyone.

Chapter 1

The rain fell in thick, heavy drops as I stumbled through the alley, my heart pounding in my chest. I had to get away, had to hide before they found me.

I had always known that time travel came with a price, but I never expected it to be this steep. The visions, the nightmares, they were bad enough, but now I was being hunted. And I didn't know who or what was after me.

My time machine was gone, destroyed in a blaze of blue light that had left me reeling. I didn't even know how it had happened. One minute I was stepping out of the portal, and the next, everything exploded.

I had been lucky to escape with my life, but now I was stranded, alone and afraid. The rain soaked through my clothes, making me shiver, but I didn't dare stop. I had to keep moving, had to find a way out of this nightmare.

As I turned the corner, I saw a figure emerge from the shadows, a tall, dark silhouette that seemed to be watching me. I froze, my heart racing, as the figure stepped forward.

As he turned towards me, I caught a glimpse of his face beneath the hood. It was twisted into an almost feral expression, with sharp cheekbones and a strong jawline. He had a communication device of some sort around his waist, and his attire looked like something out of a post-apocalyptic world. The fabric was tattered and frayed in some places, as if he had been traveling for a long time.

But what really caught my attention was his appearance. He looked like a caveman, with long hair that was matted and unkempt, and a thick beard that covered most of his face. His skin was rough and weathered, like he had spent most of his life outdoors. Despite his primitive appearance, there was something almost regal about him, like he was a king in some lost world.

I couldn't quite place his origins or time period, but I knew one thing for certain - this was not an ordinary man. And as he gazed at me with those piercing eyes, I realized that I was about to embark on a journey that would take me through time and beyond.

I tried to back away, but my feet refused to move. The man stepped closer, and I could see the hunger in his eyes. It was a hunger that sent shivers down my spine, a primal urge that made me want to run and hide.

"What do you want from me?" I whispered, my voice shaking.

The man smiled, revealing sharp teeth. "I want what you have," he said, his voice low and seductive. "I want your ability to travel through time."

I shook my head, backing away. "I don't know what you're talking about. I don't have any special abilities."

The man laughed, a sound that echoed through the alley. "Don't lie to me, Lucy. I know who you are, and I know what you can do."

My blood ran cold as he spoke my name. How did he know who I was? How did he know about my time travel?

And then, as if in answer to my questions, a flash of light illuminated the alley, and a sleek, black spaceship materialized out of thin air.

The man grinned at me, his eyes glowing brighter. "Welcome to the future, Lucy," he said, as he stepped into the ship. "I have a proposition for you."

*****

As I stared at the mysterious man walking away, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye. My mind raced with questions about his identity and his connection to the strange occurrences happening around me.

My mind is racing with questions as I try to process what just happened. Who was that man? How did he know my name? And why did he have to disappear so suddenly? I am left feeling unsettled, with a sense of foreboding that lingers in the back of my mind. As I walk back to my apartment, my thoughts are consumed with the possibilities of what could happen if I were to pursue this mystery.

The night sky is dark, and the stars seem to twinkle with an eerie intensity. The air is thick with a sense of impending danger, and I can't help but feel that I have stumbled upon something much larger than myself. As I lay in bed, my mind races with the possibilities of what could lie ahead. I know that I am on the cusp of something huge, something that could change everything I thought I knew about the world. But I also know that there are forces at play that I cannot yet comprehend, and the mystery only deepens from here.
