The Dentist Demonstration
How many are too many people?
Grant was eager to get his dentist appointment done, so he could get it out of his head until his next date at the dentist. He was seated in the main waiting room with another patient in a light green shirt, waiting to be seen by a dentist also. A blonde-haired dential nurse poked her head out of the entrance door to the appointment rooms.
''Marcia!''. said a Nurse real loud.
The light green shirt girl got up and walked towards the nurse.
''Marcia. That's a pretty name'' Grant said to himself.
He felt that his turn was coming to go to a room to get his braces appointment done.
''Grant!'' yelled the same Nurse.
Grant got up immediately with his phone in his hand. He follows the same nurse to where he would be at.
''Just wait right in here, your nurse will be with you shortly.'' she said
Alrighty'' replied Grant.
Grant got comfortable on the patient's seat where he had been operated on for the last two years he had been going to the Dentist's place near where he lived.
He wondered who would be working in his mouth this time. Would it be Evan? The short wavy-haired guy with a talkative mouth. Could it be the aloof older woman who just does her job and moves on quickly to the next patient? Or could it be Jennifer, a nice woman who Grant had bonded with for months sharing the same down-to-earth personality?
He had hoped it was her so he could feel more at ease and not hold back on his light-hearted demeanor.
Grant continues to wait in the somewhat cold room. He grabbed his phone checking his email hoping he got some notifications that someone liked the latest writing he dropped on the internet. He didn't see any new notifications, just a lot of junk mail that he would delete as soon as he saw the title of the email.
''Grant! Thank you for waiting.'' An energetic voice said.
It was that talkative nurse Evan who would be working on changing and rewiring his braces today.
''How have you been? Asked Evan.
I've been great, how about you? Grant asked.
I've been good bro. What color did you want for your braces?'' Asked Evan.
Grant looked at the colors already knowing what color he wanted, but, he liked to look just in case if he changed his mind. Nope, he wanted the same color he always packed.
''I'll go with light green. Said Grant.
Okay. Cool''. Replied Evan.
Evan left the room. Grant went back to looking at his phone hoping he would see a notification that would excite him.
He started getting sleepy, he thought it could be from waking up early in the morning. He was having a tough time keeping his eyes open, so he allowed himself to rest his eyes until the dentist came back to get the appointment underway.
''Grant, grant''. He woke up after resting his eyes to what must have felt like thirty minutes. ''Sorry about that, it took me a while to find your color for your braces,'' said Evan
Grant noticed the room look drastically different than what he remembered seeing thirty minutes ago. The setup was dark with only a couple of lights on near his seat. Grant felt like he was at a hospital rather than a dentist.
''What happened?'' Grant asked himself.
''Did I sleep the day away?'' He wondered.
''Hey Grant, do you find if a few nurses come and watch me work on you?''Asked Evan in a dark tone.
They want to get the hang of working on patients with braces. He added.
Ummm, no, not at all'' Grant answered hesitantly.
''Thanks.'' Evan quickly replied.
''You all can come in!'' Evan yelled.
Grant heard the noises of the nurses in training coming his way and was worried. It sounded like an army of them were approaching the big room. The first one came in speaking, then dozens of them followed suit after him. Grant was getting nervous by the number of nurses that came into the room.
He saw (what looked like) twenty-five nurses on the left side. He couldn't tell how many nurses were on the right side because of how his seat was set up before they came into the room. He assumed it was the same amount that was on the left side.
Nurses were still coming in the room chatting and laughing amongst each other. Grant's self-consciousness started to go into overdrive with the mind-boggling number of eyes that were on him. Some had clipboards in their hands, others had their smartphones out, waiting to record Grant's braces appointment in a darkly dim room.
He heard conversations all over like he was in a college classroom with students.
''Is that everyone?'' asked Dark Evan. '
'Yeah, that's every one Evan''. replied a nurse that looked like Marcia the patient.
''Good, appreciate the info Diana'' Said Dark Evan
''So, you're going to put three power chains on his top teeth? She asked.
Correct, after I pull all the wires he had on first. answered Dark Evan
Dark Evan begins pulling the old wires Grant had in his teeth out from the left side of his mouth to the right with the army of nurses in training observing him, do it? Marcia threw a million questions at him while Evan was pulling the wires out safely.
Grant wished that she and everyone else besides Evan were quiet so that he could at least suffer in peace.
Evan continued to pull the remaining wires on his top teeth off.
''Yep, you just pull them with this gadget and they come off. Explained Dark Evan.
You doing okay, brother?'' Dark Evan asked.
Grant mumbled yes to him.
'Okay, good. said Dark Evan
It doesn't look that hard, it just comes down to concentration? Exactly, and some arm pressure.'' Said Diana
Grant heard voices everywhere in the room and it was driving him crazy. He hated that he had so many individuals watching him like a lizard being examined.
The whole setup didn't sit right with him, at the same time, for some odd reason, his body got stiff to where it was a struggle for him to move it around.
Evan worked on taking the wires on his bottom teeth off.
''So, the same process at the top teeth? Asked Diana
Yep, you got it'' replied Dark Evan.
It didn't take long for him to take the bottom wires out of his mouth.
''Whew,'' Grant said to himself.
''So, we're gonna do a two here and a two there, make the right tight and the left less tight,'' said Dark Evan.
Grant had been a vet at going to the dentist and he still didn't understand the language the workers say to each other.
''Right three? Right tight? What does that nonsense mean?'' he thought to himself.
'' Hey, Dark Evan!'' One of the students on the left side yelled.
''Don't mess up! They added.
Come on, I never mess up on my patients'' Dark Evan replied.
Now it was time to put the new wires and the power chains into Grant's mouth. The bottom was always easy to handle. It was the top teeth that gave Grant the most discomfort, especially those middle teeth. Grant hated that pressure when the nurses would twist until it was tight enough for them to move on to the next teeth.
Diana kept asking questions and talking as if her life depended on it with Evan responding as quickly as possible - while putting the wires on Grant's bottom teeth before tightening them on.
''So, you use a wrench to tighten the braces? Asked Diana.
Yes, you can also use pliers to make them tight. Replied Dark Evan.
Okay.'' Said Diana.
Grant was exhausted with all the talking he was hearing all around the room. He felt resentment towards Evan for inviting an army of nurses to have all eyes on him. The talking wore him out, he found himself falling to sleep again seeing nothing but black.
''Hey bro, you awake?'' Asked Evan.
Grant woke up to find himself back into his normal patient room seeing the blue sky out of the window.
''Yeah,'' Grant said slowly.
He still trying to get his thoughts together. He checked his time. He was out for twenty minutes.
''I didn't expect to fall asleep like that. Said Grant.
''Yeah, I believe you.'' Said Evan.
''This room has a way of making patients fall asleep, it's really weird'' Evan added.
Grant looked around, and saw Marcia leaving the dentist, going out of the back exit door.
He was glad to get out of that dentist nightmare with a lot of nurses in training watching him with intense eyes.
''Okay, Grant. Let's get started. Okay wide please''. Said Evan with a smile.
