Moonlight slanted across the page, covered in Jwellenna’s elegant handwriting. She wiped at her cheek, and sighed as the movement smeared ink across her face. She set her quill down and reached for a cloth to wipe her face.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Sirius. Back from putting Akarisa to bed. Her heart twisted painfully in her chest, making it hard to breathe. “It’s open,” she called breathlessly to her husband.

He entered, looking worried. Of course he had assumed her breathlessness came from her injury.

“How is she?” Jwellenna asked, expertly diverting the conversation to their daughter’s well-being.

“Blissfully unaware of the reality we live in.” he replied with a small smile, coming to sit in a chair near the windowsill she perched in, tucking his wings over the low back of the chair.

Jwellenna hesitated, staring down at the words dancing across the journal in her lap. “Do you think she will ever have the chance to share her life with another, as we have?”

“If we win this war, she will.” he promised.

“And if we lose?”

He didn’t answer, instead reaching out to take her hands in his as he swallowed. “We can’t afford to lose.”

Jwellenna screamed as she fell through the sky, her torn, bloodied wings trailing behind her. Adam’s betrayal tore at her very soul. The sneering Star—Karinean—holding him aloft tossed aside the chunk of her wing that he’d ripped out of her.

How could you turn on our people like this?

I’m doing this for my people. We have been held under your thumb for too long! We deserve to be free to make our own choices!

We were only ever meant to guide each other! To help each other!

Humanity doesn’t need your ‘guidance’! You are not our ‘guardian angels’ but rather our ‘jailkeepers’! Well, no longer!

She could hear Sirius’ cry of grief echoing among the cliffs as she fell. Her last thoughts were a prayer that he could protect Akarisa alone, and win this war for her well being.

Please, please let her be safe. Let her be happy. Aeterna hear me, please, protect my family and our people. Let them continue to live alongside humanity in peace and cooperation. Please...let the princess grow up to be our savior.

Her prayer was interrupted by the first impact, her bones shattering in her body and piercing her skin as her eyes sought out the fading stars overhead with a deep reflection of grief.
