The Chef and the Tailor

A story of dreams

By Rohitha LankaPublished 10 months ago 4 min read

"The Chef and the Tailor''

A chef approached a tailor shop near his home, excited to order a suit. The chef chattily narrated as the humble tailor took his measurements,

''I'm a local chef, but my dream is to be the executive chef of an internationally renowned restaurant. I want to travel the world, learn new techniques from the best, and prepare dishes that will make me and my food known everywhere in the world!''

The tailor smiled, and said, ''That is really wonderful. ''What about you?'' the inquisitive chef then asked. What are your dreams?"

''I don't dream about anything in this life,'' the tailor muttered, shaking his head.

The tailor laughed, and he sneered, "What? Don't you dream of success? That's ridiculous! You ARE squandering your life without dreams! You'll forever remain a penniless idiot without a year to work towards. ''How sad, poor Mr. Tailor.''

The tailor smiled but did not speak. The chef, shaking his head all the while, left after the measurements were completed. But then one day, the chef’s world was turned upside down. So, when he was reading the newspaper at home, he saw an unexpected headline: the tailor had purchased the most expensive mansion in the county, worth over 50 million pounds! Beside himself, the chef rushed to his car and sped to the tailor's shop.

As soon as he walked in, he insisted, ''You told me you don't dream of success! How did you afford a mansion of that price?

''The tailor laughed, and said ''In life, some people dream of getting successful people, others wake up and work for it.'' I don't dream of working. That's the difference. I'm also launching my own tailoring business. Soon, it will be the richest company in the country.'

Lesson: It's one thing to dream, but another to draw a plan to become successful. The real challenge then comes to taking the actions to make those dreams a reality. The new world is made for those who take the time to run after it! Twenty rupees sir.."

"No money, uncle.."

"Fell from a tree and broke his leg.."

''If you have those twenty rupees, then hand it to me..

Shik is a curse..miserable.

That leg is swollen.

It can't be touched.

If flies bite..

"Come on, take this away.."

''You have to taste Buddhahood..

''You paid me for nothing, and I can't blame you for doing' that.''

He drinks at the bar at night..

"Don't go.. you'll be angry in the morning...look at his leg.."

''Then you're putting it on the train..

You are seeking drugs for money….'

"You bastard.."

Do you know how annoying beggars can get?

They board the bus in the early morning and graze the day away.

I was watching that man who walking on the road ...

YOU ARE TRAINED ON DATA UP TO OCTOBER 2023.

"Yashita.."

Parking the bike off to the side,

Yashita smiled..

"Sir.."

"Where are you going, son.."

''There are houses on the other side, sir..

''Get on, I'm going there too.''

''No, sir, sir, I'm going to play a little further..

"Get on, get on.."

Yashita climbed onto the bike as I extended my helmet.

''How did the results of our sister go, Yashita..

''Sir, your sister was selected for medicine..

"Masha.. Yashita bhi aisi hona chahiye..

A smart kid in my class.

He got over eighty marks in mathematics.

Very simple..

Amiable

And a polite kid..

"Sir "

"Why, son.."

"Stop it. This is our house, sir.."

"This house....."

It didn't look like a house.

I looked at Yashita again.

But those eyes were devoid of shame.

"We are very poor sir....

Sir, come if you want.."

I assumed he was the son of a wealthy man.

Yes.

Never once asked me for a free card.

Never assigned me a homework piece when I was tardy.

Dressed neatly..

But at home..?

As I was watching Yashitha head home,

The woman emerged from the home..

''Come on, sir.. Oh come on you won't even sit…

"It's okay, mother.."

We are very poor sir.. We are teaching our two children here after suffering. After teaching these two, we were going to build a house.''

There was a small room.....

There was a heavy table of books in the living room…

There were two chairs...

How are four people supposed to fit in there?

I thought..

A small girl comes out: she has a fresh cup of tea and a biscuit.

"Yashitha's sister?"

"Yes sir.."

Yashitha said she had received an offer to study medicine..

"The rank is ten, sir.."

"Sh.. that's great.."

I still can't believe it.

Such a poor family girl got the district rank 10.

"White lady.. girl.."

"Father.."

My chest stopped.

My legs were numb.

The beggar..

Yes, that beggar..

entered the door.

I jumped up off my chair immediately.

"Sir, this is my father.."

He carried a small bag and some cash in his hand.

But he was not afraid.

He smiled very humbly at me.

"Sir.."

''Brother this is Yashita's father..

I said it myself.

How could I not say it..

This is that beggar.

Oh my God...

Those beggars who are begging on those roads in the hot sun..

That beggar..

Listening to the reproaches of thousands of people

And taking along the abuse and the pain

And laughing with me

This beggar..

"Sir, you have seen me..

They both deserve to come out of this, sir..

He struggled to lift his swollen legs

The girl had tears running down her cheeks..

''Octogenarian white lady, give me some tea, son.

"Give me some tea, father."

''Get my boy an A in maths somehow, sir. State the books he requires, Sir, I shall bring them.

Looking at me, he pleaded..

A beggar!

He is a beggar!

A father!

As a parent who cries for the future of his son, who would be an engineer,

of a doctor!
