The Bunsen Burner Mysteries

Welcome to Bunsen Nebraska. According to the 2020 census, the population is 12,721. Yet I do believe that it is closer to 9,000 now. The pandemic did a number on the elderly community. My name is Sam Bunsen the 4th and I’m the mayor of this wonderful town. My great-grandfather was the first mayor and the founder of Bunsen. That’s why the town was named after him.

Our small town sits on the border of Nebraska and South Dakoda. For a matter of fact, it has been considered 2 separate towns because half of it sits in one state and half sirs in the other state. Neither has been incorporated, so we remain one city. City Hall, as well as a few other important buildings, were constructed right on the border line. The main door faces Nebraska, so we kept it as our address.

The police station is to the right of City Hall and the fire station is to the left. Next door to the police station is Gloria Grade School. The school was named after Sam’s wife. She was the towns teacher. Sam Bunsen Jr. High School stands next to the fire station. As the name suggests, it was named after Sam's first son.

Bunsen is a very peaceful town. Our high school may not be the best, but we do have a great science department. Our teachers are great educators. Mrs. Frans teaches Biology. Mr. Gates’s Chemistry is top of the line in my book. Physics is handled by Mrs. Greenwood. Earth Science is taught by Mr. Smith. Mrs. Tatum teaches Forensic Science. Mr. Brown teaches Astronomy and Mrs. Brown deals with Anatomy.

Every year, we invite people from neighboring towns to join us at our annual Founders Day festival. We take great pride in our town’s history and would like to share it with everyone. A lot of time and money goes into setting it up. But this year we will have to postpone the festival. Lately, there have been a few unpleasant issues going on with our science department. How these damages to the school took place, we don’t know. But Wendy Bronson is great at what she does. If anyone can get to the bottom of these mysteries, she’s the perfect choice.
