The Boring State
Two friends gush about the First State.
When the results had been completed, everyone looked around.
“We have a winner for the tenth year in a row. Delaware is officially the most boring state in the Union.”
“Yes, it’s boring. But it’s the best. That’s why just enough people live here. Others may visit for school or to shop, but the residents know its greatness,” Wade Lumwell said.
“I agree. Let’s keep pushing the boring narrative so the population doesn’t increase too much.” Jessica Lightfeather agreed.
“Delaware is too precious to be taken for granted. Go to races, see the beaches but then go home,” Lumwell replied.

The Better Man
They called her Mother, Witch, Angel, and once—only once, to her face—sir, Mary Ann Bickerdyke. It was in a burned-out courthouse in Tennessee, windows punched open by cannon fire, when a Union quartermaster mistook Mary Ann Bickerdyke for a man because she stood where men stood and spoke the way orders wished they could speak for themselves. When he realized his error, he laughed. When he finished laughing, she was still standing there, arms folded, eyes steady, waiting for him to answer her question about the missing bandages.
