Lia and Noah met when they were nine years old, both curious and barefoot, chasing dragonflies near the lake. From that day on, the wooden bench by the water became their place—a small world of secrets, laughter, and shared dreams.

Every summer, they met there. They carved their initials into the wood, told each other stories, talked about school, fears, and silly things like how clouds looked like animals. Time passed, but the bench always stayed the same—even as they grew taller and their hearts more complicated.

When they were sixteen, Noah told Lia he was moving away. The bench felt different that day—heavier, quieter. They didn’t cry. Instead, they made a promise: every year, on the first day of summer, no matter what happened, they would come back to the bench.

Years passed. Some summers they both came, laughing like they used to. Some years only one of them showed up, leaving a note beneath the bench. And then, one year, Lia came and found a small box waiting for her.

Inside was a letter from Noah. He had joined a humanitarian group overseas. He didn’t know when—or if—he’d return. But in the letter, he wrote:

“This bench has held a thousand pieces of us, and it always will. No matter where I go, this is home to me—because of you.”

Lia sat there for hours that day, the lake as still as her thoughts. She realized that true friendship doesn’t fade. It waits. It transforms. It holds space for memory, hope, and return.

Now, every summer, she visits the bench by the lake. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a note from Noah. And each time, she smiles—because she knows that some people never really leave.
