The Backyard

short story

Wildflowers (pexels.com)

Outside in the backyard there were always wildflowers growing everywhere. You could even have seen rabbits, squirrels and birds of all kinds. But, one day that started out being a beautiful, sunny day turned out to be a day that nobody ever expected to happen. The sky turned an awful dark gray almost black, but they thought a tornado was approaching but none of them heard the tell-tale sign of a roaring train. As quick as the dark sky appeared it disappeared and the sun came back out, but it also seemed different for now it was blistering hot, and the humidity was unbearable.

What could have caused this catastropic change in weather? To get to someplace cool everyone headed to their houses. They turned on their televisions and/or radios to find out what happened, but none of the stations knew anything. Some of the people did notice that not even the birds or small animals were even out like they were usually during the morning. The people were starting wonder if this could be the end of the world. They all knew about global warming and all the wars and all the various issues that could affect the environment, but do they listen to those people. No, they did not and now they had to think if they did would this be happening now.

All the people decided to go to the house at the end of the block and check on the neighborhood environmentalist, who recycled and reused as much as he possibly could. When they arrived at his house it seemed as if nature retreated to his house for it was like a dome covered is home and land. The neighborhood people stated their issue about what was happening around their homes, and he just stood there amazed at them. He always warned his friends that one day something like this would happen, and now it has. He took the neighborhood out to his backyard and offered them all two huge water wagons to back to their homes and stated that if they took care and started what he has been doing for years that their neighborhood would go back to normal, but they had to clean the area up of trash and whatnot laying around. One must recycle and if possible, reuse everything that one can.

Their neighbor stated that by simply recycling newspapers, magazines and even old books one can decrease trash piles. Old books and magazines could become craft projects, old clothes and items such as these could be given to others to use maybe or even sold at flea markets instead of thrown in garbage cans where varmints like rats, mice, racoons and other animals come and make their homes. He also stated that all those old tires laying around could shredded and made into playground cover. More simply one could plant more flowers and trees around for they will enhance your homes and the town itself for nature will slowly decrease the temperature and the humidity even slightly.

The town decided to try and do what the town environmentalist shared with them. They gathered at an old garage at the other end of town and started a recycling center. They all went around the town and gathered all the trash, old tires and even a few old mattresses that were lying around. They knew they had a lot of work to do and even studying on how to even reuse some of the materials that were gathered. They were off to a go start for after about a week they were noticing very small changes around the neighborhood.

One neighbor decided to start a community garden park and started to plant flowers and trees. Someone else went to the new recycling center and showed how to shred old tires and old papers and a few other needed aspects. This is what this neighborhood needed a kick in the pants and thanks to the good Lord and that one scary day of high temps and humidity they learned. They all walked more than hopping in their cars for short jaunts around too. All the people went down to the environmentalist's home and wanted to tell him thank you even though very late for all that he taught them. The dome around his house has disappeared for now the town has corrected their thinking about improving the environment in many ways, and they are still creating more ways as we speak.

Excellent, Mark! I have been recycling for over 50 years. I started as a young woman when they bought paper, glass, and cans. It was worth the bother then. Now we have more recycling than trash every week and it costs us two dollars a week for one bag of trash, nothing for the recycling we do. I am reminded at the water ceremony every week to recycle, repurpose, reuse, and refuse.😉My mother was a bit of an environmentalist.😊

You beautifully highlight the importance of recycling, reusing, and planting trees to enhance the environment.
