His Hidden Key

The Archives
Walking to her post she noticed her manager shuffling through papers. “What’s wrong?” She asked. The stern stare in her manager’s eyes made her forget she showed interest. Her boss has always been a hardcore man, when he walked you can tell he was going somewhere important. When he talked you can tell he meant business. He was always dressed and had a significant amount of respect throughout the company. He was mean but in the right way, a way that earned him the title of boss. Lately, she has noticed this has been disorganized, and she strolled in today to see what was going on, his desk was messy, he didn’t smile like his usual self, and he smelled like he hadn’t showered in weeks.
“I built this company off my back,” he said with a voice that was unfamiliar to her. “I charted every dollar. I carved in every engraving of this office.” The lady looked on confused as to what the Bossman was talking about. He continued to fumble through the office, this time in the file cabinet going through files that read financial reports. When he pulled out last year’s tax records, she swallowed with a big gulp.
“Is there something wrong sir?” The lady stood nervously, coffee in one hand and her purse in the other.”
“Everything, he said as looked up and gave her a stare that was blanketed with a fear of emotions. You know, he began, I’ve tried my best to be a good man. I married the love of my life, I started a company, I fought for my country, I’ve even given back to my community. I can’t understand what I’ve done to deserve this.”
She looked around the room confused as to what he was referring too, deserve what she questioned? Sir, she added.
“This piece of shit audit, a member from the financial department said Sweeping Inc has been indicated for fraud. Don’t you watch the news?” He posed his question knowing the answer. She was the only one who showed up to work, so apparently not.
“I mean,” she stumbled. She never got the words out as she was sent home and was told not to return until further notice.
“Did I just get fired?” she said humbly gathering her thoughts. Having just lost her job, Geesha didn’t know what to do next. Maybe, she thought quickly, I can help. Walking back to her car, she searched the internet to find that it was indeed in fact true. Sweeping Inc. was going out of business and had filed chapter 11 bankruptcy due to fraud allegations brought on by Mr. Minkers wife. She claims the company has been lying about their finances since the start of the company and that she’s seeking damages in an undisclosed amount for the loan she had taken out 15 years ago to help start the company.
(Part 2)
Mr. Minkers didn’t seem like the one to defraud someone, he was always straightforward, Geesha thought long and hard, and decided that it was time for her P.I. skills to begin. Geesha had been in school to become a private investigator while working full time at Sweeping Inc. she was set to graduate next month. She decided that this was going to be her first case. Something doesn’t seem right, all of a sudden the loan company is seeking punitive damages for default interest rates. Geesha drove home in silence worried about what’s next, she decided to send Mr. Minkers a text.
“Hey, this is Geesha, I want to take the time to apologize to you about everything that’s happening in your life. I want to assure you that things will be fine. I will do my best to help you with all of your concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions and I will be in touch soon.”
Geesha clicked send and waited for a reply as bubbles appeared, but there was never a response. Geesha fell asleep in the foyer, and had woken after 10:00 a.m. when she checked her device she noticed she had two messages from Mr. Minkers.
One read “please don’t worry about anything this doesn’t concern you. I’m sorry I employed you and you have to go through changes seeking another job. You’ve always been a pleasant employee and a pleasure to talk with, but I think it’s time we move on and you start looking for other work.” The other read please don’t bother. I’m sure I’ll manage well. Please don’t text back!
Geesha decided to text back, despite being told not to do so. See, I am here to help you, she started the message, then quickly deleted it. She rephrased her message. “Mr. Minkers, I know you may feel that the world is against you, but I am not. See, I have been studying Criminal Justice for the past four years while working for Sweeping Inc for extra income and I have been seeking my license to become a private investigator; I am set to graduate next month. I wanted to take on your case free of charge because things just don’t sit well with charges and allegations of fraudulent conduct . If you are interested, please let me know, so that we can get started.” Geesha started her day periodically checking her phone from a reply from Mr. Minkers.
Note: This story comes as a series. This is the rough draft. I am still in the character development phase of this and just wanted to express what was going through my mind. I have not brainstormed or outlined this story, it was freelanced. All credit and work is done by me. The making of this story will also be drafted and edited in the coming weeks. I try to aim to write stories in completion every 30-90 days, so do not expect follow-ups of parts 2 and 3 until later this year or next. Please expect for this to be deleted and altered as I work through the kinks, details and flow of this draft. As always, thank you for your support!
