The Deadly Forest
Windhaven, Oregon, was a quiet small town until three weeks ago. That’s when they started disappearing. According to the 6:00 o’clock news, the total count had risen to twelve, and police investigations to date had provided no clues or suspects. Many of the older residents thought they were runaways since they were all teenagers. Others believed cult activity was responsible since it was approaching Halloween.

Bleeding Hearts and Bullet Wounds
She was a wonderful liar. Someone who could ask for the clothes right off your back and you’d give them to her without question. The Pear Tree
“Who are you?” The question took me by surprise. I had never been asked before and this was the first time I ever had to think about it. Was I my job? The retail position at the mall folding up behind rummaging browsers. Was I my hobbies? The charcoal under my fingernails and the smears of paint on my jeans from the weekend painting. Was I my family? My mom and my two sisters suffocating me with their neediness. Or was I my memories? The shot that rang out in the night out by the old pear tree, the night I went to bed with a father and woke up without one.

Apple of Her Eye
Melissa enjoyed sitting below her apple tree. It wasn't really her tree, but she had sat below it for nearly a year. Each day after her mother's classes ended she'd grab her notebook and her walkman on her way to sweat through the afternoon. And each day around 5:30 as the sun weaved through the branches an older girl would ride by on a white bicycle and wave hello as she continued on her way home.

Prickly Pear
"Hey!" Renee didn't hear the word, but she saw the wave, the open mouth, and the frantic college student running toward her. They trotted silently next to each other as Renee counted off the last half mile. Finally she stopped and looked at her roommate, the one who had ignored her all semester. "I didn't know you ran!" Her roommate, Cam, grinned at her. Renee locked her hands behind her back, so she didn't prattle off with something sarcastic like, Oh, you didn't know deaf people could run? Cam stood there for one more minute and then waved half-heartedly, jogging off in the other direction. Renee shook her head and threw open the door to her room, hoping Cam would leave her alone so she could get work done.

Dog Tale
It was a bit warmer than most December days in Oregon but I didn’t mind, it reminded me of my hometown in Texas. It never got very cold down in Dallas, but a seventy-degree December day in Portland was not so common. I had worn my light jacket over my grey uniform button-up at work despite my co-workers' complaints of heat. Most of them had grown up in the Stumptown area and had no concept of how hot it got in the southern half of the US.
