Subsistent Lies
The courting season was here and I was in Anevia, acting as Ambassador for my King. I would have preferred to be in Vespar where I was close to tracking down where my family’s murderers were, but I had a duty to my King. King Vincenzio had his mind set on having Valence returned back to his rule and he thought I was the best man for the job, so here I was at Anevia’s annual tourney where I was doing my best to have King Arthur relinquish that land into my King’s hands. So far, I was getting nowhere, at least, not to the liking of my King. King Arthur said if Vincenzio wanted Valence, he would have to share the land with him. This meant Vincenzio would either have to marry his daughter to the Count that lived there or his ward, Constance. From my view, this was fair and a good deal for my King since the land bordered both kingdoms and since Valence was rightfully Arthur’s. Only problem was Vincenzio wanted the land all to himself, he didn’t want to share what he believes was his, which I could understand; ten years ago one of Vincenzio’s most trusted knights sold Valence to Arthur as revenge for sleeping with his wife, which at the time Vincenzio thought she was just a courtesan. After selling the land the knight switched sides and settled somewhere in Anevia; before Vincenzio could track him down, apologize, and get his land back before the claim was exchanged for the money, the deal had been finalized and the knight had died. So much tragedy had happened to Vespar during the last ten years that it’s ashamed that we were still trying to fix them in the present.

Subsistent Lies
I had to admit as I was in front of the King next to Calib I thought that I would surely get caught, especially when the Ambassador of Vespar sat there studying us. When we had came back to our side of the field Calib took off his helmet and dismounted. The fighting hadn’t even started and he was already sweating. I was sweating too, but I had every right to be; I was risking my neck by disguising myself as a knight. “As you all know tag team battles are fought in two segments. The first segment will consist of jousting and the second segment will consist of swordplay and wrestling. Each opponent will compete in only one of the two segments. However, who shall ever win the jousting segment may compete in the swordplay and wrestling should their partner lose. Now let the match commence!” The King yelled taking his seat again and grabbing a goblet of wine to toast the match.

Subsistent Lies
I watched as Lady Gabriella and what seemed to be her sisters arrived. The lady seemed to be very intrigued with all that was going on, and had talked to the King like he was an old friend. I shook my head and walked to find Blaine. I never thought that I would be bested by a lady but the day came and I still was trying to recover from the shock. My anger before came only because I thought she was Colin, but when a lady was revealed, I didn’t know whether to curse the gods or laugh until there was no more in me to laugh at. I had won the rest of my fights this day and the fact that I lost one didn’t do much to my pride. It was an honor to me that I had finally found someone who could compare to my fighting skills as much as this lady could. I knew, however, that Blaine felt another way. He was quite embarrassed and grew with more anger at the fact that his skills had been bested with a lady. I walked toward him now as he sipped his wine, looking over at Lady Gabriella. “Smile my brother. You act as though the gods have cursed you on this fine day.”

I watched as everyone gathered around Gabriella and asked her many questions about today’s festivities. Zaria and I stayed in the shadow as we watched many fawn over her. “She really was good today, wasn’t she?” I asked, looking up at Zaria who hardly seemed to notice the commotion.

Subsistent Lies
After the tourney mami had reprimanded me for disguising myself as Colin and participating in the tourney. After telling her that we had been invited to the Kings ball all was forgiven and forgotten. We had spent the rest of the day buying new dresses for all of us, despite my objections. So the night of the tourney that was exactly where Isabella, Zaria, mami, and me were, at the Kings ball. After being reintroduced to the unnerving Ambassador of Vespar, Duke Gabriel Giovanni, introducing my sisters and mami, reliving the loss of papi to King Arthur, and promising him that me, my sisters, and mami would save him a dance I was whisked away by the Kings daughters and their ladies-in-waiting. I thought at first they only wanted my company so they could look down at me for my acts; I was shocked when they praised me for my acts. As everyone does I enjoyed the praises at first, but after answering the same questions and hearing the same thing (Weren’t you scared? Who taught you how to fight like that? Where did you train that horse of yours? Why did you do it? How can I be like you? You are really brave I would never dream to do something like that.) I quickly grew bored. I was thankful when Darius Harte came to excuse me from their company with Blaine Jacqui’is in tow. “Excuse me ladies, but if you don’t mind Count Jacqui’is and I would like to have a word with the greatest swordswoman in Anevia.” Darius said bowing at the ladies. Blaine did the same, not once looking at me. “That is if Lady Gabriella would like a new change in company.” Darius added turning his gaze on me; Blaine still would not look at me.

JACK OF DIAMONDS
Nigel Bannister looked up from the sketch he was working on, watching the hallway closely. He could still hear the echo of the door slamming downstairs. He had the lights dimmed, thinking there was no need having all the lights on, not with everyone at the fair. It was the reason he’d volunteered to stay behind in the first place, to answer the calls coming in—knowing there’d be none because of the fair. It gave him a chance to sketch--something he’d been neglecting for far too long. He wasn’t planning on spending the rest of his life in the middle of Devon. He had his mind set on the London art world. And the only way he’d be noticed was to make a name for himself, and the only way for him to do that, was to paint. But he was easily distracted and soon found himself drawing another picture--a face in the crowd as he liked to call it.
