Respite
Abraham held the heart-shaped locket in his hand. He was certain it once had a vibrant color, but the mixture of time, dust, and bloodshed had long ago caused that shine to disappear. He didn’t open the locket that hung around his neck. He knew better than to do so without a reason. There was almost no time for sentiment in the new world, but even less time for it outside the walls of Respite. Still, sometimes, Abraham felt the need to hold the keepsake in his hand. He hadn’t opened it in ages.

Only Happy Thoughts
When the product launched, everyone just took it for yet another cutesy gadget craze from Japan or maybe South Korea. Who else would come up with a heart-shaped light-up locket that monitors your biometric response as you explore the never-ending scroll, then automatically selects an emoticon that best represents your comment-reaction to any social post you happen to dwell upon.

A Father's Love
Blake sat safely in the living room of his inner house, or, at least what was his living room at one time, listening to the scraping sounds coming over the speakers from the outside monitors. He was crying, holding the silver heart-shaped locket his wife Devin had given him after Ashley was born, back before the “Cure” destroyed everything. He held it for a moment then opened it to look at the pictures he had crammed into it, then took it out to look at the strands of hair laced through it.

Dear Diary
"Dear Diary, It's been 282 days since the fallout. Jonny left yesterday morning to find food but he hasn't gotten back yet. I really hope he's okay. The raiders have been coming onto our side more and more. We're going to have to leave the city soon and try to build a farm or something. It's getting nearly impossible to find food. Teddy and Serena were found yesterday down by the bridge. Both of their throats had been slit. They were completely stripped! They even took Serena's heart-shaped locket! What the fuck did they need a locket for? Fucking idiots! There's got to be light at the end of the tunnel. Things are so bad here.

Of Shackles Scorned
The sun drifted just above the entrance of the harbour, sending streams of light dancing across the calm waters below, dotted with the cargo ships arriving from distant Karne and the pleasure-craft that became so popular in the Fall season. Across this medley of deep blues and oranges the reflections of the sky-craft could be seen darting in all directions, as the swarm of corporate vessels and drones hurtled to landing parks across the city, or out of the boundaries destined for a distant hub. All of this made the harbour appear even more lively than it already would, the flat surface of the sea given an ever-shifting life of its own. In the distance, the short bursts of the sirens of a docking freighter could be heard. Akira was pulled out of her trance, peering out over the waters, by Boo’s gentle chastisements.

The Culling. Top Story - June 2021.
It all happened so fast that nobody had time to even realize what was happening. I've decided to write this all down in case something happens to me. Someone needs to tell this story, and anything could happen before I can pass it on.

Iron within a Rose
A lone tall figure toiled away in dimly lit area. Heavily covered from neck to the feet in a semi-bulky protective suit, with a clear glass helmet over the head, hunched over while tending to a row of plants. What was once a basement of the church ruins above, was now host to a variety of plant types that could grow in the colder weather inherent to the side of a mountain. Well placed, clear plastic sheeting affixed over the missing parts of the ground floor and sunken side of the basement wall kept the worst of the elements out, as well as enclosing the burgeoning crops.
