The Final Girl
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I let my friends draw ahead of me as we slowly approached, almost everything in me screaming to tell them all to run, to get us out of this horror movie before it began.

THE FARMER AND HIS WIFE
"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window." Anton Zillich heard the words but dozed nonetheless, his chin bouncing off his chest. The last of his produce hadn't sold until the sun began setting. The long day drained him.

Do you go in, or do you keep walking along the path into the night?” The prompt blinked across the pathway in the virtual reality simulation. The Witch of the Woods
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Mary inched closer, the lantern in her hand suddenly going dim. Her hand shook, and the metal of her lantern rattled. Her body kept moving towards the dilapidated building, even as her heart and mind argued whether to stay. She was too close now, close enough that anyone inside could just fling open them door and run after her, yet she couldn’t stop moving.

The Blackest Night
TW: Talks of Abortion, Sexual Assault, and Murder ************************* The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Amelia parked her car just behind a row of trees that lined the perimeter of the cabin. She turned off her engine and stared at the lonely cabin from the driver’s seat. She sat in the hand-me-down car her grandmother gave her a few weeks ago on the day she passed her driving test just listening to the world around her: the rustle of the auburn leaves shaking in the howling wind, the rhythm of the rain as it splashed on the ground. With hands still gripping the steering wheel, Amelia pulled herself forward and turned her gaze upwards as she looked out of her windshield. She searched the black, expansive sky, looking for the moon. Finally, she found it, full and round, peeking out from behind heavy clouds.

I Know You
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. There was no electricity in a cabin this far out from civilization, but staying in some sort of shelter beats staying out in the rain. I looked around to the rest of my unit as they went about killing time while we waited out the night. Not much that can be done considering the sky above is dropping a lake on us tonight.

Dust
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Ellie’s wings fluttered as she fantasized about what might be the source of that change. Her anxious wings managed to raise her from her seat and lean her up against the window of the hut. Only a single candle beside her lit the entire space. It wasn’t nearly enough light but it was all they had.
