Symbiotic: Chapter 56

A "Wood Wide Web" Story

By Canyon Cappola (TheNomad)Published about a month ago 7 min read

Sara retreats to her Alchemists Workshop, not because she's running from Ami's nonstop listing of 'other ideas' she has for the valley, each more insane and terrifying than the last.

She closed the door to her Workshop with a sigh of relief, the muffled echoes of Ami’s manic voice still ringing in her ears. “Lava tubes under the town for heated floors? Who even *thinks* of something like that and then puts it in the ‘good idea’ list?!” she muttered, shaking her head.

The familiar scent of herbs, oils, and powdered minerals grounded her. Here, amidst shelves of neatly labeled jars and bubbling cauldrons, the chaos of Ami’s workshop gave way to order. Sara rolled up her sleeves and set to work, her hands moving with practiced precision.

- Four batches of Minor Healing Salves were mixed, stirred, and sealed, adding two dozen precious vials to the VDF stores.

- Five more each of Body, Mind, and Soul Pills were pressed and dried, their shimmering hues promising strength, clarity, and resilience.

- Six fresh Purification Draughts were bottled, their sharp scent cutting through the air, ready to cleanse corruption and bolster Cadri and Brogan’s troops.

The rhythm of crafting soothed her, each completed recipe a small victory. By the time she finished, twenty‑five reruns of known formulas had earned her another 500 Crafting experience. The tally rose to 1730 of 2000, so close to the next threshold she could almost taste it.

Sara leaned against the workbench, wiping her hands on a cloth. “If only I could stay here and push through to Level Five Alchemist,” she murmured. But, as if summoned to dash her hopes, Tas’s voice shimmered into her mind, calm and precise.

Tas: “Viscount, the Life Lions have exited the Dungeon. She Who Laughs Last wears a new Corelace Amulet collar. They are approaching the village.”

Sara froze mid‑cleaning, her heart leaping. She dropped the cloth, rushing from the workshop, her boots striking the cobblestones as she made for the village gates.

The sight that greeted her was magnificent. The four Life Lions strode proudly across the fields, their manes gleaming with vitality, their eyes sharp with pride. At their head, She Who Laughs Last carried herself with regal confidence, the Corelace Amulet collar glowing faintly against her fur.

Sara approached, her smile wide. “Congratulations, Pride of Baron The Glorious Lion Who Roars at the Sun. I would love to hear your thoughts on the Dungeon.”

Laugh’s Last tilted her head, her voice rich with pride and faintly amused disdain. “It is… not being a complete waste of time when faced with the obvious superiority of the Pride.”

Sara chuckled, recognizing the weight of the words. For the Lions, proud and unyielding, such an admission was high praise indeed. She bowed her head slightly, acknowledging their triumph. "You honor me with your words, and Haven Valley with your presence. Come, Pridemates. Can I interest you in a side of cow in celebration of your victory?"

The Lions padded with her toward the village, their presence radiating strength and majesty. Sara followed, her heart swelling with pride. Between Fluffy’s boundless loyalty inside the valley, Ami’s chaotic brilliance at the gates, and the Life Lions’ unmatched power guarding the boundary, Haven Valley had taken great steps towards becoming the bastion of safety she needed it to be today. It was becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The next morning’s air was crisp, the valley still wrapped in the pale glow of dawn. Sara stood at the edge of the village, watching as the Foreshadows moved in formation toward the Dungeon Mine. Their armor gleamed faintly in the rising light, their steps purposeful, their voices hushed with anticipation.

She approached them, her eyes settling on Dalen, the group’s healer. Calm, steady, and wise, he carried himself with quiet dignity, the kind of presence that steadied those around him. Sara reached into her inventory, fingers brushing against the item she had held back since her battle with the Redfangs.

The Staff of Renewal shimmered faintly as she drew it forth, its carved wood etched with subtle runes, its head crowned with a crystal that pulsed with gentle light. She held it out to Dalen, her voice warm.

“Take this. I claimed it from the Redfang healer, but it belongs with you. You can make far better use of it than I ever could.”

Dalen’s eyes widened, his hands reverent as he accepted the staff. He bowed his head slightly, gratitude shining in his expression. “Viscount… this is a gift beyond measure. With this, I can keep my brothers and sisters standing when the dungeon tests us. You honor us.”

Sara smiled, her tone firm but kind. “I look forward to hearing the story of your proud victory. Come home safe.”

The Foreshadows straightened, their resolve deepening. They bowed to her in unison, then turned toward the mountain path. Their silhouettes stretched long in the morning light as they trekked toward the Dungeon Mine, determination etched into every step.

Sara watched them go, her heart heavy with hope and worry. She knew the dungeon was no simple trial. It had tested the Life Lions, and it would test the Foreshadows just as harshly. But she also knew she could not shield them from it.

“They must succeed or fail on their own strengths,” she whispered to herself, turning back toward the village. The Pride had woven legend the night before. Now, it was the Foreshadows’ chance to carve their own.

Sara walked the length of the valley walls, her boots steady on the stone ramparts. The VDF manned the gatehouse with disciplined vigilance, their armor gleaming faintly in the morning light. The hum of the Offense and Defense Nodes pulsed through the air, glowing with restrained power, ready to unleash their strength at a moment’s command. Watchtowers set across the edges of the valley stretched in every direction, their watchful gazes protecting from surprise from all angles.

Her eyes lingered on the newest additions being installed. Ami’s terrifying enhancements. The automatic ballistae loomed like mechanical predators, their rune etched gears clicking softly as they tracked for targets. Sara could only imagine the horror of charging these walls, only to be met by a storm of bolts tearing through armor and flesh. Terrifying, yes, but hopefully more terrifying to foes than to friends.

She paused at the gatehouse, watching the defenders drill, their movements sharp and confident. Pride swelled in her chest. This was no longer the vulnerable valley entrance she had stumbled through barely a week ago. What had once been open ground and fragile hope was now a fortress of readiness.

The walls stood tall, the gates reinforced, the defenders trained and equipped. Every stone, every rune, every weapon was a testament to the unity of Haven Valley. The VDF, the crafters, the residents, the System, all working together under her and Tas’ guidance.

Sara rested her hand against the cool stone, her gaze sweeping across the valley. “It’s a miracle what has been accomplished here so quickly,” she whispered to herself. “We’ve truly built something worth defending.”

Yet even as pride warmed her heart, a shadow of doubt lingered. She hoped it would be enough. Enough to withstand what was coming. Enough to protect the people who had placed their trust in her. Enough to hold Haven Valley against the threats that loomed beyond its walls.

Sara straightened, her resolve firm. Whatever came, Haven Valley would meet it head on.

In the distance waves in the Lifewheat rippled like golden tides, the faint movement betraying the approach of those Sara had been waiting for. Families, crafters, children, guided to the valley safely by the towering forms of the Life Lions, their guardianship promised by Baron Glory.

Sara stood before the gatehouse, the VDF assembled in disciplined ranks, their armor gleaming, their eyes sharp. She raised her voice, steady and clear, carrying across the walls and into the hearts of her defenders.

Sara: “Soldiers of Haven Valley, today you stand not only as guardians of Haven, but as the first faces of welcome to those who will call this place home. The crafters and families who come to us now are the lifeblood of our growth. They have traveled far to get here, bringing with them a future of skill, hope, and children eager to learn. They are the future we defend.”

She gestured toward the horizon, where the Lifewheat swayed with the unseen passage of the Pride and their charges.

Sara: “A new dawn of growth is upon us. Soon our numbers will swell, our walls will echo with laughter, and our hearths will burn brighter. Haven Valley will be the Haven that is its namesake. A place of safety, of strength, and of promise.”

Her gaze swept across the VDF, pride shining in her eyes.

Sara: “Stand tall. Show them the courage and unity that has built these walls. Let them see that they are not entering a wilderness, but a home defended by those who will never falter. Today, you are not just soldiers. You are the foundation of Haven Valley’s future.”

The VDF straightened, their voices rising in a cheer that rolled across the gates. The glow of the Offense and Defense Nodes pulsed faintly, as if echoing their resolve.

Sara smiled, her heart swelling with pride. The Valley was ready to welcome its new residents. And together, they would make Haven Valley into the sanctuary it was meant to be.

“Oh, and could someone turn off Ami’s Death Ballista please. Those things look far too eager to shoot at anything that moves!”
