Sun and Moon
Why solar and lunar eclipses were created
In the before times there was night and day whose light was provided by the stars. Two lovers, Sun and Moon, from a remote village were very much in love, but neither family approved of their relationship. They’d sneak away every night together, guided by the light from the stars.
“Sun, my beloved,” Moon cried to Sun one night. “How are we ever going to be together? Our families are trying to tear us apart. I can’t bear the thought of losing you; what are we to do? We’ll never be.”
Sun was saddened by his love’s resolve and began to ponder. An idea struck him like lightning. “Moon, I love you, and you love me. I don’t have to wonder. We can be together if we steal away in the dead of night by the light of the stars.”
“Oh Sun, do you mean it? What will become of our families?”
“Moon, I can’t give you up, you are what makes me balanced. If we are to be together, it is the only way.”
Moon walked over to Sun and gave him a kiss. “I can’t give you up either, Sun. Let us steal away to the next town over. We can escape to our own little paradise.”
So, the next morning, Sun and Moon decided to elope. Unbeknownst to the couple, there was an eavesdropper hidden in the bushes. Sun’s cousin slinked back to Sun’s mother, Fyre, and whispered in her ear. “Oh, auntie Fyre, Sun is planning to elope and run off with Moon! We’ll lose him forever!”
“Let me handle this, my dear nephew. They will not elope. I shall ask the heavens for help. Fyre began to kneel and she began praying to the stars for assistance. "Oh bright stars that shine the heavens so bright, please open Sun's eyes to Moon's hidden dark side, and break my dearest Sun from Moon's evil spell. Banish Moon to the farthest and darkest dale."
The stars heard Sun's mother’s prayer, and the next morning, while Sun and Moon were eloping, the stars transformed Moon into a giant orb and placed her in the sky to watch over the people of earth at night, so they could have a break. Sun, being heartbroken, began to cry long and hard.
"Oh Sun, whose love for Moon we know to be true, we'll grant you one wish for whatever you want us to do. Let us ease the pain in your heart. Let your truest desires reign." The stars responded to Sun's cries.
Between his sobs, Sun asked for one request, "Return my darling Moon, she was taken from me too soon! I'd gladly lay down my life just to see my darling Moon's smile for one night."
"It was because of your mother's prayer first that your dear Moon was cursed. We can't take Moon's curse back, but we can give the curse a little slack. If you promise to work the rest of your days in the morn, we'll give you your love forlorn. But only for one day every few years will you be able to see your dear."
"Anytime with my love will be cherished. I will burn out without her."
Overwhelmed with joy, Sun gladly accepted the star's proposal. They then transformed Sun into a bright and shiny orb and placed him in the sky in the morning times to watch over the people of earth in the daytime while his love, Moon, watched over the people of earth at night. Sun and Moon are now together, as promised by the stars, every solar and lunar eclipse as pay for watching the people of the earth all day and night.
