Standing on Dark Lake

Standing on Dark Lake

By fictional-worldPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

The wind was biting, and the water of the dark lake was eerily still. The moon was hidden behind the thick clouds, and the only light came from the dimly lit lantern in my hand. I stood on the shore, shivering and unsure of what to do next. I had come to this place to confront my fears, but now that I was here, I realized that I might have made a grave mistake.

I took a deep breath and stepped forward, my feet sinking into the cold sand. I waded into the water, and as I did, I felt a sense of unease wash over me. It was as if the lake was alive and watching my every move. I pushed the thought aside and continued walking until the water reached my waist.

That was when I saw it. A shadowy figure emerged from the water, its long, slender fingers reaching out to me. I froze, unsure of what to do. The figure came closer, and I could see that it was a woman, with long hair that floated around her head like seaweed.

"Who are you?" I asked, my voice shaking.

The woman didn't answer. Instead, she beckoned me to follow her. Without thinking, I took a step forward, and the water rose up to my chest. I felt a sudden panic rise within me, but I couldn't stop myself from moving closer to the woman.

She led me further into the lake, and the water became deeper and colder. My legs began to ache, and my lungs burned for air, but still, I couldn't stop. I was caught in a trance, unable to resist the woman's pull.

Finally, we reached a small island in the middle of the lake. The woman stepped onto the shore, and I followed her. As soon as my feet touched the ground, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. The island was warm and welcoming, unlike the dark lake that surrounded it.

The woman led me to a small hut, and I followed her inside. The room was dimly lit, and the air was thick with incense. A fire was burning in the hearth, and I felt myself drawn to it. As I sat down in front of the fire, the woman began to speak.

"You are here because you are seeking answers," she said, her voice soft and soothing. "But the answers you seek are not here. They are within you."

I looked up at her, unsure of what she meant.

"The darkness within you is not something to be feared," she continued. "It is a part of you, just as the light is. Embrace it, and you will find the answers you seek."

With that, the woman disappeared, and I was left alone in the hut. I sat there for a long time, lost in thought. When I finally stood up to leave, I realized that the darkness within me was not something to be afraid of. It was a part of me, just as the light was.

As I waded back into the lake, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I had confronted my fears and had come out on the other side. The dark lake was no longer a place of fear, but a place of acceptance and understanding. As I made my way back to the shore, I realized that the woman had been right. The answers I sought were within me all along. I had been afraid of my own darkness, but now I saw it as a part of me that I could embrace.

As I stepped out of the water and onto the shore, I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders. The darkness that had been consuming me for so long was no longer a burden. Instead, it was a source of strength.

I looked back at the lake, and for the first time, I saw its beauty. The moon had emerged from behind the clouds, casting a soft glow over the water. The wind had died down, and the trees that surrounded the lake rustled gently.

I realized that the dark lake was not a place to be feared, but a place to be respected. It was a place where I could confront my fears and come out stronger on the other side. It was a place where I could connect with my own darkness and learn to accept it.

As I walked away from the lake, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I had found what I had been looking for, and it had been within me all along.

Years passed, and I never forgot about the dark lake. Whenever I felt lost or unsure of myself, I would think back to that night and the lessons I had learned. I realized that the dark lake had been a turning point in my life. It had helped me embrace my own darkness and find a sense of peace within myself.

I knew that the dark lake would always be a part of me, but now it was a part that I could accept and even embrace. And for that, I would always be grateful.
