Chris dove into the clear cool pool and curved his awkward frame towards the surface. He broke the still seal of the surface and exhaled what breath he had left. Floating in the deep end, he watched his classmates in their little cliques, talking and gossiping about who knew what. He started to climb out, grabbing the ladder without looking, and when he turned his head, there was the prettiest girl in the school. Startled, he let go, falling back into the water. When he surfaced, she was squatting at the ladder laughing, causing her breasts to jiggle in the tight onesie swimsuit she was wearing.
“You okay?” She laughed a bit more before catching his eye. “I'm sorry. Um, I was hoping you could do me a favor.”
The air conditioning in the building created a draft, sending a chill down his spine. He was prepared for either an insult or a fake invitation or both. This girl was popular with everyone. Boys, of course, but girls, teachers, parents, and anyone that happened to be around her. She was warm, intelligent, athletic, caring, honest, and seemed genuinely interested when she talked to you. Well, that's what the story was. The truth was, if she thought you were beneath her she treated you like a servant. And that's exactly how she treated Chris.
“I would really appreciate it.” She squeezed her breasts together in the skin tight suit. “I would pay you, of course.”
They stared at each other. Chris's light blue eyes versus the deep brown eyes of his bully since freshman year.
“Pay me for what?” Chris trembled, despite trying to be smooth.
“Oh, right, I need you to tutor me.”
“It's the last day of school. What do you mean?”
“I have summer school.” She pouted, knowing her feminine wiles would work. “And you are going to tutor me, please.”
“How much we talking?” The money intrigued him.
“$50 a day, 3 days a week for 6 weeks, and if I get an A, you get a bonus,” Maya said, sounding rehearsed.
“900 bucks?” Chris replied, feigning disinterest.
“Plus a bonus.”
“If you get an A.”
“Look, that's the most my dad is willing to pay. I really need your help, Chris.”
She actually knew his name? That was a success in his mind.
“Alright, when do you want to start?”
“I was thinking Sunday night? I start summer school Monday.”
“Don't you want to wait and see what they assign you?”
“It's a refresher. I just need you to start refreshing it for me,” she said with a smirk.
“OK, what subjects are you refreshing?”
“All of them.” Maya pouted again.
“Ok,”Chris paused for a moment and held eye contact with the bombshell. “Which classes? Biology, physics, chemistry? What mathematics class were you taking? Which English? I need to know which books to bring.”
“I will just give you my number after class. Is that sufficient?” she huffed with some attitude.
“Yeah.” After the word left his mouth Maya stood, turned, and bounced away.
He watched her until he noticed Bradley, the bulky bully, staring him down. He sank in the water and slightly rejoiced that he would be making some money. Tutoring the hottest girl in school was a plus, but she hated him. He regained his composure and swam towards the ladder.
Chris contacted Maya the next day and discussed what he needed to bring the following night. When the fateful time arrived, he nervously pulled up to her huge two-story house in his beat up green Gremlin. He got his backpack out of the hatch and walked up the enormous brick stairs to the front door. The night air was a mixture of cool breeze and a heavier slice of warmth as the summer had only begun.
Chris took in the large house for a few seconds. Really, he was just trying to catch his breath. He knocked on the door. There was some scratching and grumbling before the door flew open and there stood Maya in all her glory. Behind her was a huge staircase leading to the second floor and on each side were aquariums. They were full of unrecognizable goo, ranging from red to pink on one side and light green to dark green on the other, swaying in a nonexistent current. Chris said his hello and after he was invited in he walked straight to one of the aquariums.
“What is this stuff?”
“I don’t know. Some kind of experiment my father is working on.” The snark was back.
“What does he do?”
“Some kind of electrical engineer I think.”
“That isn’t …”
“Who do we have here?” A deep voice rang out from behind Chris.
“Oh, Daddy.” Maya spun around and immediately hugged her father. “This is Chris. He’s the one tutoring me.
“You’re the smart kid from her school?” the large black man asked as he stuck out his massive hand for the tiny white boy to shake.
“I guess so, sir.” Chris said as he reached for the outstretched hand.
“I heard you got quite a few awards this year. Own that shit, kid.” Maya's father grabbed Chris's hand and slightly squeezed as he shook. “My little girl seems intrigued by your academic success. She is always going on about how you effortlessly ace your classes.”
“Daddy!” Maya exclaimed with a pout.
With that, the massive man let go of the lanky kid’s limp hand and disappeared up the stairs. Chris almost asked what the goo was, but decided against it. Maya invited him into the next room, which had a TV and couch on one side and table and chairs behind it. They got situated and stared expectantly at each other.
“Where would you like to start? I brought all the subjects you said.” Chris said as he put the backpack on the table.
“I don't know,” she said snippily.
“Do you have your grades? I could see where to start.”
“I don’t know,” she replied before looking down, attitude replaced with a bit of shame.
“Hey, that’s okay. Let's start with the subject you like the least.”
“Biology.” Another pout.
Chris pulled out the advanced biology book he had and they started going over the material. Over the course of the three hours he was there he tried biology jokes, which were hit or miss. Maya didn’t really retain much as she almost failed the pop quiz he gave her, but she swore she would study the following night. About halfway through the night, she finally caught onto his explanation of cell structure and her attitude dissolved as Chris’s wall lost a few bricks. When they finally wrapped the lessons up, she walked him to the door, giving him a genuine smile as he left.
On Wednesday night, he was ushered in by Maya’s mother, who bombarded him with questions about his accomplishments. Maya’s parents seemed quite interested in his accolades each time one or the other popped in to check on them. Maya opened up a little bit about her parents’ overbearing behavior, which was probably because he witnessed it first hand. Her mom or dad would pop in every twenty minutes or so, and would ask how things were going and if he was seeing any improvement. That night Chris listened to her troubles and became a convenient shoulder to cry on.
Chris did learn that Henry, her father, was an actual biochemist and bioengineer, but his work was classified. The goo in the aquariums were harmless bioluminescent sponges that were a hobby of his. Athena, her mom, was an evolutionary virologist and studied how viruses evolved over time. Both were proud of their hard work and looked down on their daughter for her choice to not work hard. She promised each time they brought up her laziness that she was going to work harder.
After their session, Maya actually thanked him for coming over and listening to one of her problems. She stretched out her hand for a shake, and when he placed his hand in hers she placed her other hand on his and shook it strongly as she thanked him, once again with a look of genuine appreciation. He left with a little more of his wall chipped away.
The sessions were going surprisingly well, and Maya seemed to be studying on her own in between them. Her pop quizzes went from close to failing to B's then eventually to A's. Their interactions even went from forced interest to friendly banter. When the final week came, Maya was actually calling Chris just to talk compared to her earlier calls of questions about her assignments. They were growing closer with each passing day.
On the Wednesday of their last week, Maya aced her quiz and pulled Chris in for a big hug. He enjoyed being pressed up against her large breasts and she was happy she was passing summer school. When they separated after a few long, intimate seconds, Maya gave him a quick peck on his cheek.
“What was that for?”
“For being you.” Her eyelids fluttered.
“Well, I think you are going to do great on your finals.”
“You’re still coming over tomorrow, right? I am still nervous about the tests.”
“Of course. Can't let my favorite student down this close to the end.”
Maya blushed.
“Thank you so much for everything you have done for me. I really appreciate it, Chris. And, I am really sorry for how I have treated you these past few years.” Tears began to well up in her eyes. “And I am sorry for starting that rumor about you using a litter box.”
“That was you?” Heat tried to build up inside Chris, but as he looked into the soft warm brown eyes of his once nemesis, the boiling calmed. “Water under the bridge, Maya.”
“Are you sure? I thought you would hate me.”
“I never hated you, just how you treated me. Plus, it's high school. Something was bound to start.”
Maya surprisingly came in for another hug, which slightly startled Chris, and he embraced her equally.
After the embrace they stared expectantly at each other again before Chris broke the tension.
“I gotta run, but I will see you tomorrow.”
“Okay, goodnight Chris.”
“Goodnight, Maya.”
With that, and a slight hesitation on Chris's part, they parted ways. He left the mini mansion and she went to her room. On his drive home, Chris fantasized about Maya. Her whole attitude seemed to have changed towards him. She seemed softer towards him now, less arrogant and snarky.
When Chris arrived the following day, the Thursday before her finals, he was greeted by Maya. She wasn't wearing her usual garb that hid everything. She was showing off cleavage and her belly button along with a fair amount of thigh. This was something he had only ever seen her wear the few times he saw her out and about in the real world.
“Wow, you look amazing. Do you have a hot date?” Chris said as he looked her up and down.
“Something like that,” Maya said as she came in for a strong hug.
Chris was caught off guard, but enjoyed the sensation all the same. The hug lasted for a few minutes and he would have sworn she was snuggling into him. He didn't care. He closed his eyes and pulled her in tight. At least until someone cleared their throat.
Henry was standing there, watching his scantily clothed daughter cling to a boy in a decidedly un-student/tutor sort of way. When Chris's attention snapped to her father, his arms went limp. Once Maya released him, he took a step back, fear settling in as he waited for the coming retribution. However, to his surprise, Henry only said, “I don’t pay you to feel up my daughter.”
“Of course not, sir,” squeaked Chris, “I-I wasn’t…”
“Oh, daddy, don't scare him,” Maya said. I was only thanking him for helping me.”
“Just get to studying,” Henry replied as he ascended the stairs.
During their three hour study session, Chris caught quick glimpses and accidental views of her assets while Maya caught every attempt. She would just blush but otherwise didn’t discourage him. They sped through each subject and actually ended with the quiz around hour two. After she aced it, they just sat and talked. It wasn’t until her father came downstairs that they realized what time it was and, when he stared at them with a stern look, they realized how close they had gotten.
Chris moved his chair back to where it belonged while Maya just stared back at her father. He scoffed and walked towards the kitchen. She then moved her chair right next to Chris's. They continued to talk, Maya placing her hand on his thigh as she smiled through her explanation of why she thought the principal was a pervert. Henry walked back in with a huge sandwich and stopped in his tracks.
“Okay, it's time to go. You are done with everything right? You are confident she will pass?” Henry spoke with authority at Chris.
“Yes, sir.”
The kids started to put up their school supplies and Chris was quick to the front door. Maya dropped her last few items when he moved away from her and followed him. Once his hand hit the doorknob she grabbed his shoulder and spun him around to face her.
“Aren’t you going to say goodbye?” Maya asked as their gazes met.
“Yeah, I’m sorry.”
Maya enveloped him before he could say anything else. Her head rested on his chest and he closed his eyes to enjoy the moment. Henry had already gone upstairs so the embrace lasted longer. When they finally parted Maya kissed him on the cheek again. His hand instinctively went there and he blushed.
“Thanks.”
“No, thank you for helping me so much.”
They stared into each other’s eyes for a few long seconds and Maya jumped at Chris planting a kiss on his lips. Her eyes were closed, but his were wide open from the shock. When he felt her tongue wiggling against his lips he opened his mouth and let her in. Minutes went by as they stood there and made out, but eventually Maya pulled away, a fire in her eyes.
“I don’t want to stop, but if they see this they won’t let us hang out anymore.”
“I understand.” Chris was still dazed.
“But I was hoping you would come back over tomorrow night, they have their annual conference in the city.” She asked with fluttering eyelids and a pout.
“Sure.” It worked.
“Okay, I will call you. Drive safe and enjoy the rest of your night, Chris.”
“Okay, goodnight Maya.” Chris replied as he opened the door and disappeared out of it.
The following night Chris arrived at exactly when they discussed and walked up to the door, flowers behind his back. He rang the bell and waited for an answer. Nothing came and that was when he got suspicious and started looking around the yard for Bradley. After an empty scan he swallowed his fear and knocked on the door. There was a grumble and a faint scratching sound coming from the other side now. Chris decided to open the door, hoping he wasn't making a huge mistake.
The huge wooden door moved silently after the metallic click of the doorknob disengaging. When the crack got big enough that he could see inside he noticed something was off. There didn’t seem to be any lights on. As the slice of sunlight grew Chris could see more of the interior of the house. Soon what was illuminated shocked him. Red liquid ran over the walls and streamed down them like jelly. Everywhere he looked there was red on white until a figure broke up the new pattern.
It was Maya, still dressed in her outfit from the previous day. She was standing there, still and hunched over, as Chris took in more of the scene. His brain finally registered what was missing, the bioluminescent sponges. In the darkness they should have been lighting the foyer. He took a step in before saying a word.
“Maya?” He whispered.
She lifted her head and slowly turned her body towards him. He continued to walk towards her as his head was on a swivel. He heard a grumble come from her direction and turned in time to notice her mouth was covered in dry blood and she was either salivating or she had fresh blood in her mouth.
Chris was able to dodge the mouth and Maya stumbled through the front door causing something to pop into Chris's sight. When the fading sunlight framed her face he could see the light. One brown eye had a faint red glow while the other had a dark green glow. Before she lunged again he thought “there goes my shot”.
