Specter and the Quantum Rift

A Tale of Science, Shadows, and Second Chances

By yousif hajiPublished about a year ago 7 min read

One of the many things made famous by New Haven was its humongous skyscrapers, the crowded roads, and the very last edge of technology. However, under this shiny shell, the city hid a lot of mysteries-secrets that only a few people dared to search for. And one of those secrets was Elias Gray, an eminent physicist once, but now he is the mysterious and unstoppable superhuman known as Specter.

For Elias, it had to be the endless and limitless world that was always around him. The quest for his devotion had led him to synthesize the Quantum Gateway, which was a device intending to unite our world with the other dimensions. However, this obsessive behavior had taken away from him everything-his job, his family, and his humanity included. The mishap that inflicted him with his power left him a kind of hybrid between worlds, that of the reality and energy, as well as at the height of the shift between dimensions. As Specter, he had taken it upon himself to protect New Haven from threats that mostly people could not even imagine them.

The very night of a snowstorm wintry night, when the first snowflakes were still falling and Specter felt like he was turning on and off, he found himself drifted several feet above the city. He was still wandering in memory, one of his dark sides had succumbed and the family that had supported him was lost. However, there was little room for introspection. A cooling draft thump spilled through the air, darting the whole length of his back, and he was jolted into the reality that was. Something was amiss?-what could it be.

Specter had to have his senses on top alert, the city needed to be thoroughly interrogated it. He reached out and tried to find out what caused all this by fixing his sight onto the source of a violent suction in the form of a fiery maelstrom in the sky manifesting in the region of the old industrial district. It was the Quantum Rift, a hole in the reality itself, and it started to get larger by the second. Not to curtail any further, it would wind up sucking the entire city to a dimension not known before.

However, Specter was not the only one among all those who are aware of Rift. He realized as he got closer to the industrial district that he saw one of his known figures watching the growing hole on a rooftop. The figure was none other than Dr. Veronica Blake who was once the closest colleague of Elias and had turned into his greatest rival. Just as the two of them had been brilliant in their own respective fields, Veronica also was after Elias's transformation, but she now had got obsessed with the aim of utilizing the power of the Quantum Realm for herself.

"Veronica," Specter called out as he landed on the rooftop, his voice resounding with a spectral echo. "What have you done?"

Veronica finally turned her head to look at him. The mocking half grin she were making seemed very alien to her. "Elias, that name is not in use anymore. You better call me Specter. It has been long time. I presume that this wonder is the account of my latest acquisition of knowledge. Am I right?"

"A madman's game doesn't do justice to the modern Veronica," Specter said, with such hardness in his voice that Veronica did not doubt him. "This is not a contest, the Rift is very unstable Niko, and if it keeps on growing, it will be the end of everything."

"On the contrary, I am the right one, and maybe that is why you misunderstood me," Veronica said while smiling and her eyes seemed to contain a perilous flash. "I have managed to invent the Quantum Gateway. Thus, my experiment can use the power of the Rift that yours doesn't have. The Rift invites me to the place where I can be the controller of reality itself."

Specter was broken-hearted. Her ambition had taken her to the threshold of insanity and she was ready "to sweep the city into the storm". Though he had to confront her and prevent her from making the worst, he was already very worried. Veronica was a brilliant and ruthless woman, and she had no doubt that she thought out what she wanted to do.

"I don't want you to do it." Specter declared as he walked a step closer. "The forces that you are dealing with are not subordinate to you."

Veronica beamed from ear to ear. "Oh, Elias, always the cautious one. But caution won’t save you now." With a flick of her wrist, she turned on a device on her belt and a wave of energy bursted from the Rift, circling her in a blue protective wall.

Specter blocked the energy as he expected and he could counterattack due to his ability to be moved through objects. He moved quickly towards Veronica, trying to disable her device, but she read his move and was prepared. She brought more quantum energy to life by a quick move and the area around him started to change.

Specter, completely taken aback, felt all the energy twist and warp around him. He almost got the feeling that the world was coming apart as reality itself, and for a second, he actually thought he might get sucked into the Rift. However, by exerting his will, he tapped into his Quantum Realm connection, which acted as a regulating mechanism, and as a result, he found the strength to take control of his own thoughts and to secure his form. With a burst of Qi, he broke the illusion, and they were standing face to face.

Barely enough time to recover, Veronica gasped as Specter stuck his hand through the barrier and grabbed her gizmo. He took it off her belt causing the energy shield to fluctuate and disappear. Veronica backed off, her facial expression being clearly a mixture of shock and anger.

"You've had enough, Veronica," Specter remarked in a tone of power. "This is over."

Veronica was stubborn and she wasn’t ready to surrender just yet. With a growl, she took out a small, metallic orb she had in her pocket and threw it at the ground. The orb burst out into a blinding light, and when the light ceased, Veronica turned out to be nowhere in sight. Specter looked around, the adrenaline rush inside him, but without a sound, she had vanished.

Having vanished somewhere, sight unseen the frighteningly disruptive troublemaker he was, the stubborn Spectre turned his infinite gaze to The Rift. It was still splashing on, its chaotic energy menacing to eat up the whole world in its path. He had to find a way to close it, but he knew that any mistake could be catastrophic.

Specter was drifting in a kind of an altered state, another dimension of his mind where he was reflecting on what to do, the speed of his thought being life speed. The first thing he had to do was to fix the tear. He however realized his powers alone would not be enough. He will have to use the Quantum Gateway-machinery which was responsible for this incident-a chance, that he could perhaps survive. Unlike Veronica, he would not attempt to steer the pathway of the Rift. He would definitely shut it down forever.

Specter, whom? is a quantum physics connoisseur, started nucleating the energy field around the Rift to converge it. He was aware of the pressure on his powers and at the same time struggled with containing the chaotic forces, but, no matter what, he went on, driven by his desire to succeed. It squirmed and throbbed as if alive, and failed to heed his attempts, but he did not give up.

While the energy field was vibrating as one, Specter tried another track at the same time. His other hand gone through the flipped-back narrative time to the Quantum Realm, taking energy from the same source of the Rift. Such a move was a perilous one—it could spell his destruction in the twinkling of an eye—but it was the sole solution to his own transformation through teleportation.

Nervous strains of electric impulses shook the air up while he kept concentrating all his powers on the target. The Rift began to shrink, its chaotic energy getting controlled. Specter could feel his mind and body being strained as he kept the field together, but he knew he was near his goal.

With one final exertion of energy, Specter forced the Rift to fold on itself. The energy imploded with a deafening roar, and the world stopped for just a moment. The Rift was suddenly vanished the next moment, with only a barely noticeable shimmer in the air where the area had been.

Specter gently drifted down to the ground, looking worn out but feeling relaxed. The city was out of danger—for the time being. Nonetheless, it was just the start. Veronica was still at large, and she would not be content until she got her way in the twisted experiment pouring out of power. He had to remain alert, prepared to protect New Haven from any of the dangers.

Specter felt a glint of hope as he looked around the city. He had lost everything in the accident that turned him into what he was, but he had discovered a new purpose. He will use his abilities to take care of those who are powerless, to secure the world from the evils that hide in its darkest corners.

And maybe, just maybe, he would find a way to redeem himself in the process.
