Smiles, Kittens and Giant Robot Attacks: A True Story

The KenZz Story

By Raymond BarberPublished 4 years ago 7 min read

The streets of Puchong were quiet compared to those of Kuala Lumpur; for example, if you were to fall in the middle of the day here you would only be trampled by 20-30 people before someone stopped to let you up. This is about half the amount you would face in Kuala Lumpur. Growing up in large towns had taught Mr KenZz to understand and expect the constant hustle and bustle outside the restaurant, which is why he noticed when it abruptly stopped. A city like Puchong may have been docile compared to the much larger Kuala Lumpur or even his home town of Ipoh but the city wouldn't sleep this early in the day.

Foo Hing Dim Sum was the best Dim Sum restaurant in all of Malaysia and Mr KenZz was want to stop there whenever he travelled through Puchong. Today was no exception to the gratitude of the proprietor. The Dim Sum restaurant was always busy with customers. Patrons would stop for brunch, morning tea, lunch, dinner and any number of snack breaks in between. The restaurant was set up with the kitchen in the very centre of a large round train track with a train no larger than a teapot pulling thirteen trailers each holding a plate of delicious Dim Sum. There were stools set up around the tracks for people to eat at as well as private booths you can take the plates to from the train. Even with all the noise from customers, the train and chefs all shouting, Mr KenZz was able to hear exactly when the noise outside stopped.

Slowly Mr KenZz stood, the dumpling he had been about to eat slipped from his chopsticks into the Dim Sum dish he had been sampling from. He looked around to the other patrons, no one else noticed anything. Gracefully, Mr KenZz moved from his chair to the door within seconds. The manager of the restaurant noticing his quick departure called out to Mr KenZz to pay his bill, however, he was too late. Mr KenZz was already through the door. As Mr KenZz slipped from the doorway into the street he was struck by the absence of movement. The street still heavily congested with cars and people, all of which were at a stand still. Men and women all stood silently staring at the skies. Mr KenZz slowly looked upward.

"weeeeee" came Mr KenZz's voice, despair filling it as he watched the five Giant Robots marching in from all directions. Slowly composing himself he took in the scene again before evaluating it. The one marching in from Kuala Lumpur was missing its right arm and a huge chunk of torso. It clearly had met some resistance. Mr Kenzz also noticed there was a gap that could fit another Giant Robot to the North West of him, the direction of his homeland, Ipoh. He stopped for a moment, filled with concern over what the missing one was doing there. Snapping back to reality, Mr KenZz, went into people-saving mode and took advantage of the missing Giant Robot, well, tried to. He raised his hand pointing to the gap where the 6th Robot should be. "weeeeeeee" he exclaimed.

The woman to his right, mouth agape, horror in her eyes, slowly turned to look at Mr KenZz to see what the commotion was about. Her eyes locked in place and her mouth snapped shut. She just realised who she was looking at and she jumped to attention.

"It's Mr KenZz!" she cried out, "He has come to save us!"

"weeeeeee" he exclaimed again pointing furiously at the gap between the Giant Robots, showing them where to escape safely.

"THE Mr KenZz?", the man to his left chimed in. "Mr KenZz of Wden on S693?"

"weeeeee" He tried again.

"Yes! That's him, it's Mr Kenzz! He's come to save us!" stated a third person.

Mr KenZz sighed in frustration as he pushed the now cheering people aside. He needed to figure out what the Robot's plan was and where they were heading. Using his above average problem solving skills he was able to calculate where the Robots were headed. As Mr KenZz walked toward the centre of the Robot convergence the onlookers began noticing him and started to cheer and follow him.

"weeeee" Mr KenZz said while unsuccessfully trying to usher his new followers away from the danger.

"KenZz, buddy, I appreciate you offering to buy me lunch, but that usually means you pick up the cheque." The voice wasn't one of his newfound followers, he turned as the newcomer placed his hand on Mr KenZz shoulder.

"weeeee" Mr KenZz said pointing out the Robot menace to his friend Alien.

"Okay. But you owe me RM300, and that's just what you ate."

Mr KenZz sighed as they grabbed their phones and started up their Top War apps in unison. Mr KenZz quickly summoned his Hercules Carrier to help evacuate civilians while Alien called up his Dragon Impact so that they could fly to the Robots convergence point. Both being heroes of great wars, they worked with each other seamlessly, knowing precisely what the other was counting on them for.

"So they obviously have use of Digit-reality(tm) technology." Started Alien as they scouted the shrinking circle of giant death in his Dragon Impact. "But what game are they from, what is the goal, who other than a registered hero even has access to a Device?"

"weeeee" suggested Mr KenZz.

"Oh, absolutely but not until we have dealt with them. Running a check on the registry is a very time consuming job KenZz"

"weeeee" sighed Mr KenZz.

"Yea bud, they seem pretty indestructible! Where did you say they were headed?"

As they travelled toward the central convergence Mr KenZz took the time to explain his thoughts to his companion.

"I see. So you think that these Robots were in a cartoon you once saw?"

"weeee"

"And they are heading to that orphanage?"

"weeee"

"And you think you can defeat them if I drop you there and help with evacuation?"

"weeee"

"And you saw the wreckage of the one to the North-West proving that they must be close to the end of the time they can exist in this reality?"

"weeee"

"That's the one you disagree on? I hope you are wrong about that one KenZz. Even if they aren't here maliciously they are causing a lot of damage."

"weeee"

As they swooped into the centre of the Robot convergence, Mr KenZz's plan all started to make sense to him and he could see where they were headed, 'the Lost Children and Kitten Orphanage'. Mr KenZz jumped from Alien's Dragon Impact as they flew over the roof of the orphanage, which in hindsight was a terrible idea as they were still at least one story above the roof. With no time to summon anything new from his phone he tucked his arms and legs in and managed to roll onto the roof injuring his right leg in the process.

Trembling from the pain Mr KenZz stood tall, he knew exactly what to do. The television show jingle played in his head over and over from the cartoon he had watched countless times in his childhood.

"Happy fun time, we will make you smile, for a while, but were not gone, till you grin, happy fun time"

"weeeee" he sung along while he waited for the Robots to get closer.

As they approached, he knew from the cartoon exactly what to do. They would fade back into their own dimension whenever someone smiled big exaggerated grins at them. They approached painfully slow. Mr KenZz turned on the spot, clutching at the pain in his leg and smiled at each of them in turn. It wasn't working!! The pain in his leg from the potential tibia fracture was preventing him from smiling big. Mr KenZz looked around for Alien who was clearly keeping up his end of the arrangement and helping people move out of the way. This pleased Mr KenZz because he didn't want to admit what had to be done. Quickly Mr KenZz pulled out his phone and unloaded Top War from the Digit-Reality(tm) App so that he could load up his secret shame. Seconds passed in slow-motion as Candy Crush Saga loaded into his reality altering mobile phone. The screen flashed with a message.

"Would you like to expend an extra life?" He clicked yes.

Fully restored and Top War successfully reinstalled, Mr KenZz stood tall and gave his signature winning cheesy grin and as he predicted, the Robots all vanished.

During the clean up process a prototype Digit-Reality(tm) was discovered in the possession of one of the orphans only this prototype apparently worked with television. The military must have been using the orphans to test the new devices before issuing them to major heroes. The child responsible was never discovered, but after months of testing the new device, it was decided that the kid had to have been very powerful as no one else could match the power level of those Robots. Mr KenZz vowed he would keep his eyes on this orphanage, but first, there was still more Dim Sum.

The End.
