Sign Language Is Not Uttering One Word Right?
The challenge is writing a story where one word is not uttered in the conversation.
It was a beautiful day and I was out to get some fresh air. I heard some interesting noise coming from down the alley. It was a sound I hadn't heard before. I might turn around and go the other way. Then I saw a neighbor come from that direction.
She cautioned me, putting her fingers to her lips to quiet me. We stood there with neither of us saying anything. What was going on at the neighbors at the end of the block? When I tried to talk the neighbor would silence me.
Then she whispered that the neighbors were outside fighting. They are using sign language and are very upset as she sees their hands just flying as she walked quietly by their house.
She thought it may be best to not let them know we were just standing here waiting for the fight to be over for me to walk that way. She mentioned that she was concerned that fists could fly by the intensity of the hands and the looks of anger on both faces.
It would have been nice to know more sign language so I could observe and see what the fight was about. The couple owned a bus and they were now giving signals to their children to get into the bus. Then the three small children were moved quickly onto the bus.
Again I started to walk in the direction of the fighting neighbors. I decided I might speak with them before they left. I know it is none of my business, however, seeing the three children I felt I may help them to cool down prior to their leaving their yard.
Waving to them as I approached their yard was a great idea. As I went up to their fenced-in yard, I asked if anyone spoke English and was told in sign language that they did not. I knew the signs for love, more, and of course hello and goodbye.
The signs I used were used in that order. Suddenly grins broke out on both faces. That was great, as they got my message. Then both started to talk in sign language toward me. Oh oh, they think I speak sign language. No, my other neighbor said, they are trying to correct what you signed.
Their signs looked familiar. They were saying Hello, more love, and Goodbye. As they walked toward their bus, I smiled and waved.
There was so much pride in talking to my neighbors, perhaps I just may want to learn a bit more sign language. Then, on second thought because I made them laugh, I may just want to stick to a few words said in the wrong order for another attitude adjustment.
Several words in the conversation with my next-door neighbor were out loud, but very few with my neighbors down the block. I guess their communication was held without one word said out loud.
In conclusion, it is possible to have an entire conversation without one word being said out loud. It is possible to have a short conversation without both parties even being aware of the sign language that was used.
