Long live the King

"Now, you wait here, your Father has a marvellous surprise for you" Scar tells Simba, grinning to himself.

"Ooh what is it?" Simba asks joyfully.

"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise now would it?" the hyenas catch Scar's eye, and all of a sudden Scar stops in his tracks. Would be really kill his own family for the throne? What if Sarabi and the rest of the herd found out, and had him exiled? Or worse, killed? Scar wasn't ready for death yet. Or what if the hyena's got to him first? They weren't the brightest bunch, but there was a lot of them that could over power him. Now he was panicking.

"Uncle Scar?" Simba interrupts his thoughts.

"Hm?" Scar looks into Simba's eyes. His innocent eyes, he was only a child, he dreamed of being a King and to follow in his father's footsteps. The throne should be his own, but was all of this really worth it? Even from a young age Scar was jealous of his own brother, but Scar was never the perfect child and he knew it. Maybe the life of solitude was something he deserved. Scar could teach Simba, be a teacher, and to be the loving Uncle he should be. "Simba we need to go"

"But we just got here?" Simba looked so confused, but Scar couldn't explain, he could never tell him the truth.

"I know, but we must leave, follow me close Simba" Scar took off and Simba obeyed. They ran up to the top of the gorge as fast as they could, Scar looked over to the hyenas and shook his head. Simba panted heavily trying to catch his breath back.

"Uncle... Scar..." Simba gasped.

"I'll tell you later Simba, we must get back to Pride Rock"

"Okay" Scar knew the hyenas were watching, but he didn't give the signal, he saw the massive group of wildebeest that was ready to plough into the gorge and kill Simba. He now knew he was doing the right thing.

"Scar?" a familiar voice up ahead, they both stop and look up to see Zazu. Mufasa's steward. "What's wrong? What are you doing?"

"I was taking Simba around the gorge, I sense something wrong" Scar looks alerted, he looks in all directions conveying the ground.

"The hyenas are over the way"

"I know, I'm not sure what there up to"

"I'll keep guard" Zazu gives Scar the nod, something he has never done. It gives Scar a sense of warmth and trust, now he must keep Simba safe. He must apologise to Shenzi later, he knows she will be onto him.

Mufasa sits proudly on Pride Rock, he sees Scar and Simba entering the area and quickly jumps into action.

"Dad!" Simba leaps towards his Father and lands on his back.

"Scar, what happened?" Mufasa demands.

"We went for a walk, around the gorge, I sensed something was off, the hyenas were watching, Zazu is keeping guard" Scar lies.

"Okay - what were you doing around the gorge?"

"He was curious"

"Hm" Mufasa rolls his eyes, typical of Simba to want to explore everywhere.

"But the hyenas were watching, so we came back" Zazu hovers overhead, he nods to them both to assure them everything is okay.

"Thank you brother" Mufasa smiles and gives him the nod. Scar felt for the very first time trusted by his brother, it gave him a great sense of warmth. "This sounds like someone needs to practice their running"

"Excuse me?" Scar seems insulted by this comment.

"Not you, my son"

"Oh" Scar laughs.

"Now Simba" Mufasa shakes his mane and Simba drops to the ground. "Bet you can't beat me back to Pride Rock!" Mufasa sprints away.

"Hey!" Simba shouts after his Father and attempts to chase him. Scar smiles, father and son reunited. Killing his nephew out of pure spite would have been wrong. One day Simba would take over as King, Scar would have to put up with it. But he would teach him, help him, play with him, be the Uncle Simba needs. Zazu lands on a tree nearby to Scar.

"So Zazu, want to race?" Scar asks eagerly.

"No" Zazu floats over head and they head back together.

"Why not?"

"Because you know I'll win, you old goat!" Zazu flies high and speeds off to Pride Rock.

"Ha!" Scar laughs and runs off. Now he can sleep well tonight knowing he has done the right thing. He will have to explain to the hyenas some other time why he couldn't go through with it. Now, he would have to live in his cave for the rest of his days watching his nephew grow up to be King. He could never tell Simba or Mufasa the truth. The hyena's are petrified of going anywhere near Pride Rock, so Scar knew it was safe there. Scar watches as father plays with son.

"Long live the king" Scar smiles to himself.
