Shark Teeth
Collecting shark teeth along the shores of every beach she visited was a habit that Cora never planned to stop. She loved identifying what shark they were from, imagining the sizes of each of its owners.
Cora wandered the Venice, Florida beach lost in her thoughts. Something seemed to always call her to the water, but she was always unable to pinpoint what it was. Her nerves always calmed as soon as she got to the beach. Feeling the sand beneath her feet and the salty breeze on her bronzed cheeks, was the only therapy she ever needed.
Today felt different though. She wasn’t sure what was going on, but she had a strong urge to go into the water. She couldn’t fight this urge today. Something was calling her and she was left helpless to refuse.
Cora waded into the warm salty water up to her waist. She stopped for a few minutes and let the soft waves soothe her. Her eyes were drawn to something flashing in the water about 100 feet in front of her. She wasn’t scared. But she was confused by what her eyes and her mind were telling her she was seeing.
Was that a shark fin breaking through the water? It drew closer to her and she couldn’t help but move deeper into the water. There was something about this creature that called to her. She wasn’t sure what to expect but she felt no fear as she went deeper into the water.
He knew who she was as soon as she entered the water. Her scent called to him and he had no choice but to draw closer to her. The other humans would never be allowed to see him or his people. But he knew she was special. His people had spoken of her coming since before he was born. She was the chosen one, the one to help guide his people into a better world.
Cora saw the glowing fin part the water as it sliced its way through the water towards her. She still felt no fear, only awe at the beauty of the fin. As it grew closer, it no longer looked like a normal shark fin. There was only a light blue tint to it, the fin was actually golden and seemed to shimmer in the morning sunlight. She felt this was her destiny closing in on her as the fin came directly in front of her.
Now that he had found the one they had been looking for, he wasn’t sure what to do at first. Then instinct took over. He approached within a few inches of the woman before he reached out to touch her hand with his pectoral fin. As he touched her, he felt her hand squeeze around him. They both knew this was destiny calling them.
Cora was shocked to feel the golden shark grab her hand. She knew sharks and how they functioned. She had studied their anatomy and feeding habits, but she had never known a shark to extend its pectoral fin and basically hold a human’s hand. But she also instinctively knew that this was no normal shark and that this was what had been calling her to the ocean since she was a small child.
Once Cerdian was certain that Cora was the one they had been waiting for, he quickly transformed and pulled her under with him. He could see the curiosity in her eyes, yet still no fear shown in those bright blue pools. She really was a beautiful human and he found himself attracted to her unlike he had anyone before that.
Cora found the transformation from shark to a more man like creature fascinating. The man was still golden, although he seemed to glow now. His eyes were a mesmerizing green color that seemed to swirl like the waters around them. The dorsal fin remained between his shoulder blades but the rest of him had formed into a strong, huge man. His muscles rippled under his glowing skin. Cora wanted to ask him some questions, but his eyes seemed to tell her those questions would be answered soon.
With no words, he took her by the hand and swam with her through the water at speeds she knew were not humanly possible. Her first thought was how was she possibly breathing under water? But she had a feeling the man leading her through the water was the reason.
It seemed only a few minutes but Cora was aware they had covered several miles of ocean before he slowed down. The darker waters cleared as they slowed down and Cora got her first glimpse of the most beautiful site she had ever seen.
Cerdian still held her hand tightly as they slowly entered through a set of grand gates that appeared to be made of glistening and continually swirling sands. She took a glance behind her as they went through the gates and watched as they magically swirled back shut, now looking like an ordinary sand formation in the ocean.
Cerdian smiled at the awe he saw in her bright eyes. They stopped swimming and he finally introduced himself to her. “Hi I am Cerdian, welcome to Elasippos. I believe you are Cora?”
Cora nodded and wasn’t quite sure how he spoke to her, but assumed it was telepathically. She tried to respond and was pleased to hear her voice as she answered him. “Hi Cerdian, I believe I have been waiting my whole life to meet you.”
“The honor is all ours. We have been waiting for you for a very long time. I hope you feel the pull to something bigger much like we do to you.”
“I do. I have felt a force to the ocean since I was very young. So, are you humans? Aliens? Sharks?”
Cerdian laughed loudly and the sound danced down her spine. “We are or once were humans descended from gods. We had been given god like wisdom and the ability to transform into what shape suited us. Unfortunately, we were attacked by humans who wanted what we had. You probably heard of the tales of Atlantis. The stories were pretty close.”
“I definitely heard the stories but had no idea how much of it was really true. But what do I have to do with all of this?”
“You are the one that was destined to save us. We need to move back up to the surface. We are only allowed to be in one location for two hundred years or so. You are the special one that was made to help us move back above water.”
“Me? But I am nothing special.”
“Oh, but you are my dear Cora. You can’t tell me you haven’t felt the magic dance around you and spark on the ends of your fingertips under a full moon. Or when you wished for something and the next day, it was suddenly answered.”
Cora blinked a few times, unsure how to answer. Yet, she knew in her heart that what he said was true. “So how many are left of your kind? And how am I going to help?”
Cerdian sat down with her and explained how her magic was much stronger than she ever would have dreamed of. He told her that their people could still transform at will and often walked above the ocean but lived in their village. There were still thousands of the original Atlantians. Her power was what they had been missing for hundreds of years to relocate their entire city.
Cora couldn’t help but be shocked by what he was telling her. “You are telling me that I have powers, and not only that, but they are very powerful, like godlike powers?”
“Yes. You are a descendant of one of the first Gods that descended to Earth. Zeuss is in your bloodline.”
Cora tried not to laugh out loud. “Okay, I know I am under water, and I am having a full-on conversation with a man-shark type person, but telling me I am magical and a direct descendant of Zeuss?” Cora paused and paced the area near them. “How is any of this possible?”
“I know this is a lot for you to absorb. Would you like to explore the city while you process all this new information?”
Cerdian gave her a tour of the beautiful city and Cora’s disbelief turned back to the wonder that was around her. After meeting several of the inhabitants she knew she would do whatever it took to help them survive and thrive.
Cora felt another pull as Cerdian led her back to his home. She felt a strange tug in her heart and stomach. She had never been in love and wasn’t sure what she should be feeling yet had never felt this strongly about anyone. She could sense that Cerdian was having similar feelings.
He leaned in and kissed her without hesitation, and she felt the divide of their worlds collide together and join in a meshing of magic and sparks they could never have imagined. When they parted, she felt almost an animal magnetism that she would never be able to deny again.
“That was unexpected. I have never taken a mate and now I understand why.” Cerdian whispered to her.
“I never have been in love with anyone either. But can this work? I am only a human.”
“Actually, our stories that have been passed on, say that the one that will save us will make the decision whether to stay with us or return to her people.”
“When do we need to relocate the city and where are you going?”
“Tonight, if you are up for it. We are going to a very remote island in the middle of the Atlantic. It is well protected by the veil of the Bermuda Triangle. Humans won’t be able to find us and we will be free to live how we see fit, making our advances and able to transform as we choose.”
They agreed to make the move tonight. Cerdian guided Cora through the steps to pull her magic from within and what exactly she needed to do. She felt the power rise through her, and a golden glow surrounded her body. She focused and as she opened her eyes, found herself standing in the sand on the most beautiful island she had ever seen.
She took it in and felt the incredible magical spirit float around her. She locked eyes with Cerdian and saw the admiration and love glowing in his green swirling eyes. His skin was still a golden color, but as she watched, his shark fins receded into his body and now he was just a beautiful hulking golden man.
“What is your decision?” Cerdian approached her, slowly reaching out for her hands.
The moment his hand touched hers, her decision was made. “I don’t have to make a decision. I am bound to you.”
He bent down and kissed her gently on the lips. Cora found herself lifted in the air and felt the transformation sweep down her body. When her feet were back on the ground, she looked down at her almost unrecognizable body. Her once shorter tanned frame, was now more muscular, taller and she too glowed a golden color.
Cerdian went to her and placed a necklace around her neck. She knew instantly what it was, he had placed a necklace made from shark teeth around her neck to represent her old life and how she saw him on their first meeting.
She smiled broadly at him, lightly gripping the shark teeth in her hand as she rested her head on his broad shoulder.
“Welcome home my love.” Cerdian and Cora walked the beach as the sun set behind them in their new home.
