Shadows Beneath the Tide

Part Two: The Abyss Awakens

By om mishraPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The atmosphere aboard the Abyssal Dream grew heavier with each passing hour. The once-bustling hum of scientific excitement was replaced by a tense silence. The artifact, securely housed in the lab, seemed to emit a presence that seeped into every corner of the ship.

Elena woke from a restless sleep, her dreams filled with fragmented images: shadowy figures moving through the depths, the shipwreck illuminated by an unnatural light, and the phrase “The tide remembers,” echoing over and over. Shaking off the remnants of the nightmare, she joined the others in the ship’s galley for breakfast.

Nobody was eating.

“Something’s wrong,” said Priya, her voice barely above a whisper. “I was running signal analysis last night, and the frequency has changed. It’s stronger... closer. But we haven’t moved.”

“It’s that damned thing,” Captain Hargrove growled, pointing toward the lab as though the artifact could hear him. “I told you it’s bad luck. We need to get rid of it before—”

Before he could finish, the ship lurched violently, knocking plates and cups to the floor. An alarm blared from the control room. The team scrambled to their stations, their nerves already frayed.

“What the hell is going on?” Elena demanded as she arrived at the helm.

“It’s the trench,” replied Noah, the ship’s pilot, his voice tight with fear. “Something’s destabilizing the currents. It’s like... something’s moving down there.”

The sonar display flickered erratically, then stabilized to reveal a massive, shifting shape near the shipwreck’s location. It was too large to be a whale and too fluid to be a geological formation.

“Is it rising?” Elena asked, her throat dry.

Before Noah could answer, the ship shuddered again, and the lights flickered. Over the intercom, a voice crackled through—Lucas, one of the divers.

“Help... lab... it’s... moving!”

Elena and Priya raced to the lab, finding Lucas standing frozen in the doorway. His face was pale, his eyes wide with terror.

“What happened?” Elena demanded.

“It... it was glowing,” Lucas stammered, pointing to the artifact. “And I swear I saw... shadows inside it. Moving.”

Elena turned her attention to the orb. Its surface now shimmered with a faint, pulsing light, and for a moment, she thought she saw shapes swirling within it—fluid, indistinct, and impossibly alien.

Over the next 24 hours, the situation spiraled. Equipment malfunctioned with increasing frequency, their communication with the surface grew spotty, and the artifact’s hum transformed into a low, rhythmic throb, like the heartbeat of some unseen leviathan.

The psychological toll on the crew was undeniable. Each member began experiencing vivid, personal nightmares, dreams that dredged up their most painful memories and darkest fears.

Priya confided in Elena that she’d dreamed of drowning, her lungs filling with water as unseen hands dragged her deeper into the abyss. Captain Hargrove admitted to hearing whispers in the wind, voices accusing him of a shipwreck years ago that had claimed the lives of his crew.

Even Elena wasn’t immune. She dreamt of her younger brother, Ben, who had drowned when she was a teenager. In her dream, he stood on the shipwreck’s deck, reaching out to her, his lips forming the words, “The tide remembers.”

Elena tried to focus on the science, analyzing the artifact’s energy readings and cross-referencing the Sable Mourne’s logbook. The entries were a chaotic mix of paranoia and desperation. The captain of the Sable Mourne wrote of his crew descending into madness after retrieving the orb. He claimed it was a “key” to a realm beneath the ocean, a realm that should never have been disturbed.

The final entry read: “We have awakened the tide. God forgive us.”

By the third day, the crew’s fear turned into open hostility. Arguments erupted over what to do with the artifact. Captain Hargrove insisted on throwing it back into the trench, while Priya argued that destroying it might sever whatever connection it had to the strange phenomena.

Before they could agree, the sonar alarm blared again. The massive shape beneath them was moving—upward.

“It’s coming,” Priya whispered, her voice trembling.

Elena knew they had to act. “We need to take the artifact back to the trench,” she said. “If it’s a key, maybe putting it back where we found it will stop this.”

The crew hesitated, but the rising dread left little room for debate. Together, they loaded the artifact into the submersible. Elena, Priya, and Noah volunteered to make the descent.

As they lowered into the trench, the Abyssal Dream shuddered violently above them, as though the ocean itself were trying to tear it apart. The closer they got to the cavernous depths where they had found the Sable Mourne, the louder the artifact’s pulse became, syncing perfectly with the pounding of their hearts.

When they reached the trench floor, they saw it: a massive, bioluminescent cavern glowing faintly with the same rhythmic light as the artifact. Shapes moved in the darkness beyond, too large and too alien to comprehend.

Elena felt the crushing weight of realization. The orb wasn’t just a key—it was a beacon, and their descent had awakened something ancient.

“We have to hurry,” she said, her voice barely steady.

But as they approached the cavern, the shapes began to stir, their movements quick and deliberate. The ocean seemed alive, watching, waiting for them to make their next move.

The abyss had awakened—and it wasn’t letting them leave.
