Scott had always been curious about the attic in his house. The entrance was a trap door on the ceiling of his closet. He couldn't reach it, and any time he asked one of his parents for help, they told him there was nothing up there, so it wasn't worth going. On a few occasions, he dragged a chair into his closet, but it had never been enough to help him reach the door. However, Scott had grown since the last time he tried, and now that he was eight, he thought he might be able to reach it this time. His mom had just left to go to the grocery store, so he had the house to himself for a little while. This was the perfect time to try again!

Scott rushed to the dining room and grabbed a chair from around the table. It was kind of heavy, but he slowly dragged it up the stairs and into his room where he set it on the closet floor. He then stood on the chair and reached up to the attic door. It was just a big square of wood with nothing fastening it in, so all he had to do was push it to the side so he could climb up the hole in the ceiling.

Scott was just tall enough to move the door, but he would need an additional boost to get into the hole. He went to the corner of his room and emptied his toy bin. He then brought the empty bin to the closet and placed it face down on top of the chair. After carefully climbing onto the top of the bin, Scott poked his head into the attic. It was dark in there, but the one small window allowed just enough light in for him to see what was in the room. It appeared to be empty aside from a huge amount of dust and cobwebs.

Still curious, Scott put his arms through the hole and onto the attic floor. He then pulled himself up into the attic and began to look around. The only thing he found was an envelope buried in the dust. It was old and dirty, but at least it was something, so he dropped it through the hole to the floor of his closet before carefully making his way back onto the bin, replacing the attic door, and then climbing back down to the floor. Scott took the chair back to the dining room table. He then put the toy bin back in the corner of his room and refilled it.

Once everything was back in order, He retrieved the envelope from the closet floor and opened it. Inside was a note that said, "Look inside the chimney". Scott's house had a chimney, but it hadn't been used in decades. The fireplace was filled in, and the only remaining entrance to the chimney was on the roof. Scott walked over to his window, opened it, and climbed out onto the roof. He carefully climbed up the side of the roof using both his hands and feet until he got to the chimney and peeked in. There was a small box taped to the wall of the chimney, and luckily, it was close enough to the top that Scott could easily reach it. There was a lot of tape keeping it in place, but since it was so old, it broke apart pretty easily, and as soon as Scott freed the box from the chimney, he climbed back to his window and into his room, closing the window behind him.

He removed the remaining tape from the box and then took the lid off. He was shocked to discover that the box was full of gold coins! Scott had always had a feeling that he would find treasure if he went into the attic. Now that it had finally happened, it felt more like a dream than real life. He thought about how to explain this to his parents. They wouldn't like that he went on the roof, or even that he went in the attic since he could have gotten hurt doing it. He also wasn't sure what they would want to do with the gold coins. If they sold them, would they let him have the money? Maybe they would give him a little, but they would probably keep most of it for themselves.

If Scott didn't tell his parents about the coins, he could hide them until he was old enough to sell them, and then he could have all of the money. This seemed fair since he was the one that found them. He put the lid back on the box and buried it in his toy bin. The attic would probably be the best hiding place, but Scott's mom would be home any minute now, so he would need to wait for the next time he was home alone to go back in there and hide the box. These coins were rightfully his, and he was going to make sure no one else found them!
