No one ever tells you how deafening silence is. Until you experience it. You see, real monsters don't live in fairy tales, woods, or even the sea. They hide in plain sight. You pass them every day on the street. The most terrifying are the ones that smile at you before stabbing you in the back. And then there's that familiar, unwanted feeling. The one that keeps you awake at night, the one that reminds you of the things you'd rather forget. The feeling that reminds us of what we're aware we're missing. The unpleasant reminder that warns us that something or someone is dangerous.

And Jules had that feeling months before; she knew something was going to happen, and her intuition had never been wrong. Maybe she could have prevented it or at least lessened its impact. But no one can predict the future, and certainly not prevent something bad from happening.

On the day of the after-prom party, excitement was palpable throughout the school, everyone talking about the evening's exciting event. Jules watched from the sidelines as her friends eagerly prepared for the lavish party at a rented house. Two boys from her school had organized the event, promoting it via a flashy social media account where they posted clips and photos to build excitement. Seniors from all the local high schools were eager to begin the graduation festivities.

Jules had chosen not to attend the party. A strange unease settled in her stomach as she read rumors of drugs circulating among the teenagers in the news articles. It wasn't just the allure of the evening; it was the rumors of pills making their way through the crowd, substances promising a euphoric effect but potentially causing a crash. Deep down, she knew something was wrong.

As the sun set below the horizon, she scrolled through social media filled with instant laughter and people having fun at the party. The posts flooded in, reflecting the teens' energy and joy, then suddenly, they stopped. One last video of students dancing appeared on her screen, and then silence fell. The excitement that had filled her feed gave way to an unsettling calm.

Minutes turned into hours, and a knot of worry knotted in her stomach. At that precise moment, her phone vibrated, a notification popping up. It was a news alert: "High School Student Hospitalized After Suspected Overdose at Graduation Party." Jules felt a shiver run through her as she read the headline, her heart pounding.
