Reverse Heist
Is Put-Pocketing a Thing? A Micro Heist Story

“She knows you took her lucky coin,” the lady’s handmaid whispered. “From her purse.” She scowled. “Somehow.”
“Me? Never!” I feigned innocence, playing the wrongly-accused nobleman. I searched for an escape amidst the bustling market, but none were forthcoming.
“There’ll be consequences if the coin isn’t returned before sundown,” she warned, gesturing to the armored knights behind her. “They’re watching you closely. Stay safe,” she grinned evilly.
“I swear I’m innocent!” I called out, knowing she wouldn’t listen. Shit, fuck! Panic consumed me.
Lady Terena eyed me suspiciously as I meandered the market, pretending to hunt down the right turnips or berries. Getting close again seemed impossible, but I had a plan.
Seizing the moment, I entered an adjacent stall, using my magic to peer through the fabric wall unnoticed.
My hand reached through the cloth wall, invisibly put-pocketing Terena’s coin back into her purse without detection.
“It’s just worthless silver,” I consoled myself as I left the stall.
“At least I’ve saved my neck,” I muttered, passing by Terena, who was staring wide-eyed at the silver coin in her palm. She looked up with confused eyes that met mine.
I simply smiled and sauntered off, whistling down the aisle.

Great pacing and I love the main character here! The emotions feel so real and the stakes feel high, despite the easy solution at the end. Wonderful little read! 💜
