QR Code Murders: Online
Yawquisha does some sleuthing.
Flowers abounded. The whites and yellows gave off that fragrance that is often tied to funerals. He looked like a boy. The newspapers and newscasts stated “man shot and killed in QR Code spree….”
But his features were that of a child: sort of chubby cheeks, small nose and chin, and no facial hair.
Yawquisha left the camera in the vehicle. She approached the casket with Kim. They stood for a solid six seconds and kept moving with the hundreds of attendees squeezed into the chapel. It featured wood paneling and stained glass windows that depicted the birth, life, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.
The cop and vlogger quickly made it to the exit. As they left, they noticed a figure muscle bound and wearing a bright yellow suit. They looked at each other and ventured back to the vehicle. Yawquisha grabbed her camera and pointed the lens at the man in the flashy attire.
“That’s gotta be him,” Yawquisha announced.
“I think you’re not wrong,” Kim replied.
They both bounded into the car. Yawquisha took more footage of the man entering the church. She got as much video as she could before the man disappeared amongst the standing room only throngs.
Later that day, Kim dropped off Yawquisha at her apartment. While in her studio, her equipment permitted her to go beyond just zoom lenses. She could use facial recognition to properly identify the man.
“You can do that?” Kim asked earlier.
“Sure can,” Yawquisha responded.
Back in her studio, she found the file on Patton. His criminal history made him available to be traced. If he had not had run-ins with the law, he wouldn’t have been picked up at all.
With a few clicks, the young lady took all of his information and sent the message to Kim.
“Jesus,” Kim replied. “You should be on the force. I oughta deputize you right now.”
Now, was the interesting part. How could Yawquisha show Patton without completely giving away his identity? Of course she had to blur him out and just show that mustard yellow suit. But she knew ahead of time that this could be tricky. What she wanted to do was show him hugging and dapping and making his way to the casket. She got all of that.
Next, she brought her skills to this problem. She figured if she could just put in metadata that looks like Patton without giving him away, she might be able to blank out information pertinent to the cases but still provide intel regarding Patton.
After chopping up the video, adding chirons, and filling in all of the extra metadata, she spoke.
“This could possibly be the break in the cases. We have convicted felon Rostin Patton. He is currently the executive producer for Diamond State Records. As of this moment he is not a suspect or even an official person of interest. However, there are strong observations pertaining to this person.” She input the right information and uploaded the video. She didn’t sit back with her hands folded over her head and a rum and coke. Although, she could’ve. That night, the video garnered over half a million views, thousands of comments, and hundreds of shares.
All of this could have goaded her to gloat. Then she thought about the flowers. They represented another life lost to this vicious string of murders. She looked at the videos as her meal ticket, her rent payments, her overall lifestyle. She was fortunate even though she was accused of profiting off of pain.
Nevertheless, she was glad the story was online.
