Scanners transformed the body ink into digital artifacts. Each scan showed on a screen. Like portraits covering the skin, they came with metadata.

“What’s all this supposed to mean?” Kim asked.”

“It’s for when I die,” rapper Go Gangster Emperor.”You see, I have more cryptic stuff than this QR code. I want my family and friends to be able to decipher what it was I was wearing on my body.”

The camera continued to capture the exact moments where he had been shot, his three children, and the block he represented. All of the details, names, places, times, and dates appeared on the screen.

“I’m going to be put in a crypt. It’s going to have an interactive computer that will outline my entire life. Isn’t that great?” Go beamed.

Kim smirked and then grew serious. “Parton is facing a judge tomorrow. I want you to know that you will be protected even more now that he will be in court.”

“That’s fine. As long as I get my bread I’m alright. DSMG doesn’t own me. I own my distribution and my publishing. I’m not worried about Parton.”

On the camera, Yawquisha zoomed in and recorded the scanner snapping pictures of Go’s expansive collection of tattoos. She picked up on every word he said.

The duo found themselves in the car. “Do you want an avatar of yourself talking about your life’s journey and showing off your many tattoos?”

“I would never put graffiti on the Castellini,” Yawquisha replied.

“I don’t know. Seems kind of cool. Just put body paint on nearly every spot and let them show the tales of how you moved through life.” They laughed.

“What’s next?” Yawquisha asked.

“It seems as though with Parton behind bars, the murders continue. It’s not as much, it’s in the low teens instead of the forties every night, but it’s a significant drop. Who the hell is out there without Parton’s involvement?”

“Consider some of Go’s former label mates. They might have the information on what Parton had planned to do if he ever got locked up,” Yawquisha suggested.

Kim looked at Yawquisha for a quick moment, then her eyes returned to the road. She felt the sense of climbing a rock. She had found the next crevice to plant her hands and feet. Yet at any moment, she felt like she could slip off the side of a mountain. This feeling persisted as she made her way back to the department.

To Yawquisha, she was focused on the meeting of productiveness and justice. She knew she was getting paid for a service to her community but then shot down that idea. It was a trade between her and Wilmingtonians. She received donations and views based on her work as a documentarian. She felt confident that a foreboding feeling of the subject matter crept into her psyche. Still, the idea of making money continued to ring her ears like cash registers. It was by virtue of her work that she knew she was going to explore her hometown and to bring more culprits to justice.

“Sir, we spoke with Reginald ‘Go Gangsta Emperor’ he goes by ‘Go.’ Anyway, we’re going to get some information out of him in regard to his fellow labelmates. That could be the next victim or another Parton. We’re not sure yet.”

“Did you find him at that tattoo shop?”

“No, we found him at the mortuary?”

“If he’s dead, how did you get intel?”

Kim snickered. “He was scanning himself and talking about all of his nineteen years so far into a computer,” she explained.

“Okay. What can we expect?”

“We’re going to get enough documents and statements regarding the murders. In fact, did you remember seeing a QR code on Go, Yawquisha?”
