The Giver by Lois Lowry was left with an abrupt ending that can be taken in many different ways. This is the way that I understood ending and how I thought that it could continue on.

My eyes felt frozen shut as I tried to blink. I felt a tingling sensation in my left hand. I tried my hardest to open my eyes but as soon as they opened water fell into them. As I tried to lift my left arm to wipe the water off, It wouldn’t move. I used my right arm and opened my eyes to see snow fall all around me. I felt something heavy on my chest and realized it was Gabriel. I quietly said, “Gabe?”

Then a couple moments later I said it louder, “Gabe?”

About 2 minutes had passed and there was no response from the toddler after many calls of his name. Heartbroken at the thought of his passing, one final time I yelled, “Gabriel!”

It had felt as though all hope was lost when finally he opened his eyes and looked up at me like I was delusional. I sat up and smirked at Gabe when he laughed. He hadn’t laughed in over 2 days so I was very glad to see that he still had his happy personality. This journey has been rough on the both of us. As I tried to sit up I realized I wasn't on the sled anymore. I thought that maybe I had slid off of it when I had dozed off. I looked around me and realized that the sled was nowhere to be seen and neither was the hill, dwellings, love, joy, or warmth. It had only been me and Gabe sitting on a mound of snow. Alone, all alone. In the exact moment I had missed the Giver more than ever.

“Tell me what to do, I'm so lost! Please hear me.”

I yelled into the blank landscape hoping that the Giver would hear.

Back at the annex the people of the community were going through so much. They were going through so many emotions. All of the Elders had scrambled for something to do or say. They were looking to the Giver for help not knowing he was a culprit in the situation. He had decided to open up a room for 1 family unit at a time. So he had a chance at explaining everything to the distraught community. After he had finished all 133 family units the Giver had heard a faint echo. At first he hadn't thought much of it and brushed it off. Then it came again, now a little bit louder than moments before. He had tried to listen closely and try to decipher the message but he wasn't able to because it was still too quiet. After the 5th time he was able to hear that it was Jonas. He yelled, “Jonas you're alive oh my sweet sweet boy!”

He jumped up from his chair though he was very sore from his age and pain he had endured. When the Giver heard what he had said about being lost and needing the Givers help he started to give advice.

“Jonas you must go to the…”

Just as the Giver was about to finish the sentence the chief elder burst through the door screaming at the Giver. Saying that he was to blame for all of this and he killed Jonas. She grabbed his arm, making him walk with her to a dark room. The Giver had felt a bed when she sat him down. He could not see anything. All around him was darkness. He heard footsteps walk past him as a voice said,

“Now is your time Giver”

He scrambled and said,

“Who is that? Come out of the darkness now!”

A window opened. He looked through the window to see the community in grief. He looked to the wall that had now been filled with light to see Jonas’s father staring at him with a large syringe. Jonas’s father took two steps towards him with a half smirk on his face. He looked over to his community and saw a small girl looking at him through the window. He was reminded of his daughter rosemary. He looked away when he had felt the pain that had always come with the thought of her. Thinking this would be the last time he would think of her he looked back. She then got up and started talking to other groups of people and soon they turned to face him as well. Then more and more people gathered in support of the Giver. Now the whole community knew about release and what it really meant. They all protested against killing the Giver. The chief elder came out and tried to convince people that the Giver had killed Jonas and that he was to blame. The community didn’t listen anymore as they would have a week ago.

Jonas fell to his knees when the Giver did not finish his sentence. He hugged Gabe as tight as he could so he would feel a sense of love. He imagined everything that could have ever happened to the Giver. But worried about the worst one.
