Password Reset: A story

Reset? But Why??

By anand dcPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

David sat at his desk, staring at the screen in front of him. He had been trying to log into his email for the past half hour, but no matter what he did, the system kept telling him that his password was incorrect. He knew he was typing it in correctly, so he must have just forgotten it. He had a habit of using the same password for everything, so he figured he must have changed it at some point and just couldn't remember.

He decided to reset his password. He clicked the "forgot password" link and followed the instructions. He received an email with a link to reset his password, but when he clicked on it, he was taken to a page that asked him to enter his email again. He did, but the page just refreshed and asked him to enter it again.

David was starting to get frustrated. He had work to do and he couldn't even log into his email. He decided to try resetting his password again, just in case he had made a mistake the first time. He received another email with a link to reset his password, but the same thing happened when he clicked on it.

Just as he was about to give up, his co-worker Jane walked by. "Having trouble logging in?" she asked.

David nodded. "I can't seem to reset my password. It keeps taking me to this page that asks me to enter my email again."

Jane nodded sympathetically. "I had that problem a few weeks ago. It's a bug in the system. The only way to fix it is to contact tech support."

David groaned. He hated dealing with tech support. It always took forever and he never seemed to get the help he needed. But he had no other choice. He called the tech support number and waited on hold for what felt like an eternity.

Finally, someone answered. David explained the problem and the tech support agent told him that they would need to reset his password manually. This would involve verifying his identity, which meant answering a series of security questions.

David answered the questions as best he could, but he struggled with some of them. He had a terrible memory and he couldn't remember the name of his high school English teacher or his mother's maiden name. The tech support agent was patient, but David could tell that he was getting frustrated.

After what felt like hours, the tech support agent finally reset David's password. He logged into his email and breathed a sigh of relief. It had been a long and frustrating process, but at least he was finally able to get back to work.

From that day on, David made a point of writing down all of his passwords and keeping them in a safe place. He learned the hard way that it was important to be diligent about online security, and he didn't want to go through that ordeal again.

David sat at his desk, feeling a sense of accomplishment. He had finally been able to reset his password and log into his email. It had been a long and frustrating process, but he was just glad it was over.

As he started to go through his emails, he noticed something strange. There were a bunch of messages from unfamiliar addresses and they all seemed to be spam. David's heart sank. He realized that his email had been hacked.

He quickly changed his password again and enabled two-factor authentication. He also went through all of his accounts and made sure that his passwords were strong and unique. He wasn't going to take any chances.

As he worked, David couldn't help but wonder who could have done this to him. Was it someone he knew? Or was it just a random hacker who had stumbled upon his accounts? He had no way of knowing, but one thing was certain: he was going to be much more careful about his online security from now on.
