Organic vs. Conventional: Is the Price Worth It?
Weighing the Nutritional, Environmental, and Economic Factors of Choosing Organic Foods
Organic vs. Conventional: This is what one needs to ask whenever they are consumed by the idea of the price.
Organic food most of the time competes with its conventional counterparts based on factors such as nutritional value, environmental efficiency, and price. However, is going for organic all that worth the additional cost?
It is however important to note that when comparing the nutrient density, both the organic and the conventional foods are nutritionally alike. But there are certain antioxidants whose content is higher in organic foods and they afford extra protection to the human body. Also, organic produce is comparatively smaller in pesticide content but as observed even the conventional produce does not go beyond the safety standards set by statutory authorities.
The only area where organic farming can be said to make a difference is in the area of environmental impact. ‘Organic farming’ may involve the consideration of various factors including the fertility of the soil, useful organisms, and water. In this point, organic farming does not use synthetic pesticides and fertilizers; hence, chemical pollution of the environment and water sources is prevented. However, it should be noted that compared to inorganic farming organic farming normally necessitates more land and manpower, which might dilute the perceived benefits of the method.
In every way, from a cost perspective, organic foods usually cost much more than mass foods which are produced using conventional methods. Such differences in price can be identified due to the high costs of production such as labor practices in framing and low yields. Although there are consumers willing to yield to the concept of health benefits, and eco-friendliness there are others who cannot afford a high price for a product when putting it into consideration the amount of money they have to spend on the product.
Overall the preference for organic or conventional foods depends on the priority a person wants to achieve. Any time that you want to avoid exposure to pesticide and encourage environmentally friendly farming, opt for organic farming even though it will cost you much. Yet if you are value-oriented and aggressive on the food nutrient price ratio you can still get fantastic value with ‘normal’ produce.
