Prelude

By Lametria Marable Published 4 years ago 3 min read

It appeared in the night sky like an immense green ball of light. Searching and observing everything in its sight. As it searched for something belonging of it. No one knew for certain what it was, it was frightening. People were hiding, running and screaming in every which way. The chaotic sounds of desperation filled the air. People were leaving. They were leaving behind a life they once known as a sacrifice for what's to come.

Feeling panicked I run into my car to see if the door was unlocked.”Yes!” They were. I slide to the floor of the backseat of the car and I duck down. I look and search around for my purse. I must've dropped it while I was running to the car. So I reach in my pocket and I grab for my phone. I unlock my phone and I begin to dial. The call won't go through. I look at the screen and there's no network bars, not even a signal. “Oh shit!” I get up and I look out the window.

In the sky there's more of them. But this time, there's sound coming out of them. The ground began to rumble. It was almost as if the earth was giving birth to an unborn child. I looked to those around me. Some of which looked back. You could see the terror in one’s eyes. What are these things? And where did they come from?

I had no choice but to run. My keys were in my purse and they both were long gone.Without my keys I couldn't leave. The only thing to do is to search for an abandoned vehicle around me. Any sight of anyone leaving their cars gave me an opportunity to take. There, in a far distance something else appeared in the sky.It was like a flare light. Like as if someone had let off a flare gun. It lit up the sky.

I looked into the vehicle next to me and there were keys. “Yes!” I get into the car and I drive. As I’m driving people are everywhere. Some were looking and pointing towards the sky. Others are on their phones trying to get a signal. ‘Beep!” “Beep!” “ We are in a state of emergency!” said the automated alert system coming through the radio waves. “If anyone is listening please take heed to shelter and stay far away from any windows!” “Get inside, outside isn’t safe!” Feeling panicked I turn down an old dirt road.

Pulling over to the side of the road. I open up the glove compartment and I search for a road map. Since the cell phone reception is bad the only thing I can do right now is to try to figure out where I am and how can I get home. “Nothing!” The glove compartment is desolate. I grab my phone to see if I could try to get a signal. “Again, nothing!”

“You look lost, do you need any help?” said an aged, stout man. He had on overalls and looked as if he was a farm hand. I rolled down the window and replied,“Yes, I am.” I said unsure. I questioned myself, “where exactly did this man came from?” Since the only thing around me was nothing but trees that stretched for miles and it was dark. The road looked dilapidated and abandoned. There wasn't even a house in sight.“Well, how can I help you?” “I'm looking for a main road.” with a confused look on his face he said, “Little lady the main road is back that way.”

Pointing in the direction at which I just came from. “Are you sure?” I said. “Yes little lady, so you need to turn this car back around and go back that way.”

As I rolled the window back up. I put the car in reverse and turned around. Why was I so stupid enough to drive down an unknown dirt road? Only to end up back where I started. “This is a state of emergency!” as the radio chimed in. “People you need to seek shelter!” The road was now deserted. Everything that was in the middle of the street was gone! What did I just witness?
